#075 - Should You Be Submitting to Remix Comps?
I recently had a healthy debate with a friend over whether or not artists should be submitting to remix comps.
He landed on the side that artists shouldn't and they are a waste of time. I pushed back quite hard as I just don't see it that way.
Remix comps should be a tool in every producers aresenal.
Whether you win or not, should not necessarily be the goal in mind. Remixing is not easy, it's a skill of it's own. There are many, many terrible remixes that DO NOT do the original justice...
And then there are remixes that are legendary. Remixes that have stood the test of time and still to this day are true classics, arguably bigger than the original. That is what makes remixing so difficult and so unique compared to writing an original.
Think the Skrillex remix of Cinema. How about Illenium's remix of Don't Let Me Down? If I Lose Myself, the Alesso remix, huge track! All arguably better than the originals.

I get it, grabbing the Splice vocal is usually a sure fire way of using an amazing vocal that is not only already processed, but easy to use within your project.

As I scour the internet searching for a single unknown artist whose music I LOVE, I come across one thing... NOTHING!
Some non-existent social media profiles, random names on Soundcloud, unsure profiles on Instagram, the only thing I'm thinking is, who the hell is this person and how the hell do I find their profile to follow them!?

The other day I was having lunch with a friend and we got to discussing how political a lot of EDM local scenes are, specifically with promoters and bookers. This got me thinking about what might be the route cause of this issue.
So many times artists are never paid what I definitely believe the deserve, most of the time they are flat out not paid at all.
Additionally, so many promoters and bookers box out any sort of possible competition that may come in and start to cause ripples through the scene.
What's worse is that so many of these same people just don't understand the benefit of having, not competition come in to stir things up, but possible partners come in to help out.
Most of these toxic business practices come from greed, fear, and more importantly ego.

I recently went to a small little show my buddy was playing in a park here in Austin, and it was a great experience. Him and his friends didn't really promote the show either, they just messaged the GPS coordinates to their freinds, and everyone showed up!
Intially there were about 15 - 20 people, but then the park started to drag strangers into the mix. Eventually there were about 30 people or so that were all hanging out, dancing and having a good time.
That's when I realized how much power there is in these types of free pop-up shows!
This type of show has the ability to draw in new fans, get contact information, and eventually throw an actual show in a venue where you can sell tickets, and sell out!

As you get better and better at production, and your marketing/promo skills get better, so too will your fanbase increase.
However, that may not cut it to become the full-time producer you aspire to be.
This is why I believe in the philosophy of diversifying how you make money as a producer when you're young, so that you can figure how exactly what you're best at, and enjoy the most. Once this is figured out, you're set and ready to niche down to that one thing.
Becoming a tour artist is extremely difficult. But, diversifying how you make money, and supplementing your income with the things you do in the studio, can help IMMENSELY with pulling yourself toward that goal. This is one of the main philosophies of this podcast and why I started it!
