'Talking Psych' Podcast #9: Flow, Goal-Setting, and Well-Being w/ Dr Trish Jackman and Rebecca Hawkins
The DSEP Northern Applied Hub, in association with the CarnegieXchange and Carnegie School of Sport, brings you our ninth episode! We were very fortunate to be joined by Dr Trish Jackman and Rebecca Hawkins from the University of Lincoln to share their expertise on Flow, Goal-Setting, and Well-Being. Alongside thought-provoking conversations on these contemporary topics, our guests share their experiences of their academic journeys to date and how they have navigated these last few months in their respective roles.
Dr Trish Jackman is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Lincoln, with teaching responsibilities on sport and exercise psychology modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Dr Jackman leads the Lincoln Sport and Exercise Psychology Group (@LincsSportExPsych) and is a member of the university’s Health Advancement Research Team (@HARTresearch). Her research focuses on understanding how to promote optimal experiences in sport, exercise, and physical activity, with a particular interest in the concepts of flow, clutch performance, affect, and goal setting. Additionally, she is currently working on projects examining psychological wellbeing in sport, doctoral students, and occupational contexts. From a practical perspective, the findings from Dr Jackman’s sport and exercise psychology research can be applied to athletes and exercisers of all ages, standards, and activities who seek to improve their performance and attain more pleasant, rewarding experiences in these contexts.
Rebecca Hawkins is a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Psychology at the University of Lincoln. Rebecca teaches at undergraduate levels within the School of Sport & Exercise Science delivering on a range of topic areas within the fields of Sport & Exercise Psychology and Research Methods. She is currently undertaking a part-time PhD alongside the lecturing role, which investigates the psychological outcomes associated with the commonly employed strategy of goal setting for the purposes of physical activity promotion. The findings from her research thus far have raised further questions over best practices within goal setting and considers possible alternative approaches that may benefit insufficiently active populations. Rebecca is also involved in projects examining optimal experiences in sport and exercise, and is interested more broadly in challenging current practices and recommendations within the physical activity domain.
