Let's discuss dyslexia in education!
In this episode of Mentorships in Education, we welcome Russell Van Brocklen. Mentorships in Education is brought to you by Just Education, LLC and is hosted by Judith Epstein. Judith has a Master's degree in Education with a concentration in Language Acquisition. She is certified in special education with post-graduate coursework and professional development in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Social Thinking, and Collaborative & Proactive Solutions and Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT). Judith created Just Education, LLC to compile a free resource library for mentors of students who struggle on a wide variety of topics that are all related to education and student success.
Russell combined the brain research in Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz with the three default writing strategies in Strategies for Struggling Writers by James Collins while in graduate school. As a result, his initial research program was funded by the New York State Senate and is owned by the SUNY Research foundation. He found that motivated high school students with dyslexia increased their writing skills 7-8 grade levels in one academic year. His approach is called The Writing Method.
Russell presented at The Everyone Reading Conference in Manhattan in 2006 and from 2014-2019. He also presented in November of 2018 at a conference run by The Learning Disability Association of NJ.
Russell speaks in the podcast about the Brain. He would like listeners to go to the following link so the information he shares is more understandable: He also speaks about Hyper Focus, Controlled Frustration and self-image Some of these terms are new to our discussion on Dyslexia.
Russell is himself Dyslexic. He connects with students at a very personal level.
If you wish to contact Russell, you may call him on his cell phone at 518-892-2202 or go to www.Dyslexiaremedy.com. You may also find more about him on LinkedIn.

Russell recommends the program at 3Dlearner.com for an alternative approach to teaching reading to kids with Dyslexia.
