The Power of Teacher Book Talks: Igniting a Passion for Reading
In a world filled with distractions like video games, social media, and viral TikTok videos, inspiring a love for reading in students can feel like an uphill battle. However, in this week's episode, we dive into a powerful tool that can captivate even the most reluctant readers: teacher book talks.
Think of teacher book talks as the trailers of the literary world. Much like a movie trailer teases the most exciting parts of a film without revealing the entire plot, a book talk does the same for literature, showing students that reading can be as thrilling as any other form of entertainment.

Unique Reading Engagement Ideas with Katie from Mochas and Markbooks
Imagine turning your classroom into a hip coffee shop or observing your students actively browsing through your classroom bookshelves to create poetry. This is exactly what we are talking about in this episode! Katie Saj from Mochas and Markbooks stops by for a fun interview about creative ideas she uses to engage her students in reading!
Katie shared her amazing classroom transformation inspired by the cozy vibes of Tim Horton's, the beloved Canadian coffee shop. She creatively turned her classroom into a unique coffee shop experience that entices students to immerse themselves in the world of books. By creating a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a coffee shop, students feel comfortable exploring new genres, selecting books for their personal reading pleasure, and above all, experiencing the sheer joy of reading without any pressure or judgment. Additionally, Katie introduced an engaging activity called Book Spine Poetry, where students arrange book spines to create poems. This activity not only allows students to connect with the class library but also encourages their creativity to soar and ignites their imaginations.

The Power of Student Choice with Kristy from 2 Peas and a Dog
When students are given choices, their engagement and output increase, leading to a sense of ownership in their learning. Join me this week as I interview Kristy from 2 Peas and a Dog about the importance and benefits of student choice.
In this episode, Kristy and I discuss the power of student choice in the classroom and its impact on engagement and learning. We explore how offering choices, such as choice reading or topic selection for essays, leads to increased student motivation and higher completion rates. Kristy highlights the idea of scaffolding assignments by difficulty level on choice boards, allowing all students to participate and succeed at their level and in their style of learning.
Kristy provides practical tips for incorporating choice, including starting small & offering alternative formats for assignments such as how to include choice without needing to create multiple different assignments for every task.

The traditional methods of teaching are no longer as effective as they once were, and teachers are struggling to find ways to motivate students to engage. Teaching Writing: The Benefits of Writing in Front of Students
In this week's episode, I am sharing an amazing strategy I learned from attending a professional development led by Kelly Gallagher—writing in front of my students. Instead of just showing students an example of the end product, this strategy provides students with unique insights into the thought process and struggles I go through as I write in real time. Modeling the entire writing process gives students permission to make mistakes while learning how to become better writers! It means providing examples from my own experience, allowing students to watch as I struggle through writing and overcoming obstacles. They learn how I question my writing, how I decided to make changes, and how I write and rewrite a section before moving on.

Engaging Students in Writing - Strategies to Increase Student Engagement
In this episode, I explore the unique challenges of teaching writing to students who have returned to classrooms after learning online during the pandemic. I reflect on how online learning has affected their skill level and ability to write at grade-level expectations - recognizing that transitioning "back to normal" may not be enough for our current student population! It's essential that teachers strive towards a supportive environment so they can provide guidance while helping them reengage skills that may have suffered over the last few years.
I also share how you can break down a larger writing assignment into smaller pieces to make it more manageable for students. Setting Realistic Reading Goals
This week on the podcast we are talking about setting reading goals with students that focus on the number of pages read. We will discuss why it is important to use a more individualized approach for goal-setting rather than expecting all students to read the same amount of pages. We will then look at how to determine what a realistic goal number is and provide you with a formula that can help you come up with an accurate goal for each student. Finally, we will talk about why it is important to have these goals in place and how to use them to motivate students.

Accountability Beyond Recording Pages With Reading Reflections
Do you use reading logs to hold students accountable for their reading outside of class? Is it producing the outcome you were hoping for when you assigned the reading? Yes, it's important to hold students accountable for the work we assign, but without a purpose beyond recording page numbers or number of minutes a student reads, is it really helping students? In today's episode share how I moved from the traditional reading log to reading reflections.
Reading logs - the recording of page numbers is a quantitative measure of how much reading has been done by the student; it tracks the number of pages that have been read over a specific amount of time. This approach does not require any reflection or response from the student. It also opens the door for some students and parents to lie for a grade neglecting the intent of the reading assignment.

Reading Conferences is where the magic happens! When you are able to sit one-on-one with students, listen to what they have to say, and correct any academic misunderstanding in real time - students will soar! Today's podcast episode is all about getting started with Reading Conferences. Once the most intimidating part of workshop (at least for me) has grown into one of my favorite parts of the day!
Reading conferences are brief conversations with students about their choice reading. When done effectively, the teacher becomes the facilitator of the conference and focuses on listing to the student.
