Alivia is a historical romance author who moved from writing short stories to novels when her characters kept showing up with copious amounts of emotional baggage, demanding it be explored. Her work centres on popular genres, in particular romance – she has published research on Mills & Boon sheikh romances, Scottish romance, and chick lit from the Middle East. She is Managing Editor of the Journal of Popular Romance Studies, and principal investigator for an AHRC-funded Research Network on Muslim Women’s Popular Fiction (2021-2023).
Dr Jodi McAlister is Senior Lecturer in Writing and Literature at Deakin University. She is the author of The Consummate Virgin: Female Virginity Loss and Love in Anglophone Popular Literatures (2020) and New Adult Fiction (2021). Jodi is also a romance author and has published six novels. Her seventh, Not Here to Make Friends is coming out with Simon and Schuster in January 2024.

A Conversation with Kate Sawyer
Today my second Lit Chick is Kate Sawyer, author of The Stranding and This Family. She is also the host of the podcast Novel Experience, where she talks to authors across forms and genres. In her life before writing, Kate worked as an actor—also as an event and theatre producer, yoga teacher, shop-keeper, and as a waitress. Kate trained in acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and was a founding ensemble member of the award-winning theatre company The Faction. She also had her own production company called The Curious Room. And her previous writing highlights before turning to fiction included self-publishing a cookbook of the recipes she developed for her little shop on Northcote Road, Dandelion.

Alex Hay grew up in Cambridge and Cardiff and has been writing for as long as he can remember. He studied History at York University and wrote his dissertation on female power in royal courts, combing the archives for every scrap of drama and skulduggery he could find. He has worked in magazine publishing and the charity sector and is a graduate of the Curtis Brown Creative Write Your Novel course. TLC Book Bites Quiz: Marriage in Literature
Today Kathleen Whyman challenges the chicks with a quiz about marriage in literature. Who will be one step closer to that bottle of Bollinger: Julia or Ed?
Kathleen is an author, a journalist, and a knackered mum. She has two books out, Wife Support System and Second Wife Syndrome and her third book, Would You Ask My Husband That? is out on August 7, 2023.
Her books are humorous women’s fiction, inspired by her own feeble attempt to juggle a career with childcare, never-ending house ‘stuff’ and, outrageously, occasionally some time for herself. She is still struggling.
Kathleen lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and two teenage daughters. There’s a lot of door slamming.

Jennifer has wanted to write since she was 8 years old, but while she was waiting for inspiration to strike, she learnt to speak Dutch, taught music in various primary schools, directed a few operas, produced several episodes of BBC Songs of Praise and lived on a narrowboat. Now, Jennifer has settled in West Yorkshire with her boardgame-loving husband, and writes cosy romcom novels.

A Conversation with Nicola May
Nicola May is a romcom superstar and the author of 16 romantic comedies, all of which have appeared in the Kindle Bestseller Chart. Two of them won awards at the Festival of Romance and another was named eBook of the week in The Sun. A Conversation with Robert Kamen
Over the past 40 years Robert Mark Kamen has written 23 feature films among them: TAPS, THE KARATE KID 1,2,3, and 5 THE POWER OF ONE, LETHAL WEAPON 3, A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, TRANSPORTER 1,2,3, TAKEN 1, 2, 3. COLOMBIANA, ANGEL HAS FALLEN.
Robert was born in the Bronx, New York. He received his BA from NYU in Literature, and his Masters and Ph.D in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1979 he sold the first screenplay he ever wrote to Warner Bros.
With the proceeds from his first screenplay Robert purchased 300 acres of raw land in Sonoma California in the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking the San Francisco Bay. In 1980 he planted a 50 acre organic vineyard on the land, which today produces highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah wines.

Gloucester author, Anita Faulkner, has been shortlisted in the Katie Fforde Debut Romantic Novel Award category with her novel, A Colourful Country Escape, for the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s (RNA) annual Romantic Novel Awards for 2023. The awards celebrate excellence in romantic fiction in all its forms.
Anita writes warm and fuzzy romcoms from her upcycled bureau in the Cotswolds. Described by her agent Kate Nash as ‘a sparkling new voice’, Anita’s debut A Colourful Country Escape was published by Little, Brown (Sphere) in June 2022 and was a contender for the RNA’s prestigious Joan Hessayon award. Damian Barr is an award-winning writer, broadcaster and journalist. His memoir, Maggie & Me, won Stonewall Writer of the Year and Sunday Times Memoir of the Year. His debut novel, You Will Be Safe Here, was shortlisted for six major awards and named a Book of the Year in the Observer, Guardian and Mail. He’s written columns for The Times and Sunday Times and hosted Front Row on BBC Radio 4 as well as his own series Guide Books. In 2019, Damian brought books back to television with 'The Big Scottish Book Club', now in its fourth series and syndicated internationally. Also on BBC TV, he presented 'Shelf Isolation' and the landmark documentary for Sir Walter Scott’s 250th. Damian holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He started his world-famous Literary Salon in 2008. He lives in Brighton.

A Conversation with Francesco Sedita
Francesco Sedita is an accomplished children’s publisher at Penguin, running Penguin Workshop, an imprint he developed over his 14 years at the company.
He attended NYU, where he studied writing and graduated with his MFA. While working on his undergraduate degree, Francesco spent a year as a “Saturday Night Live” writing intern.
In his time as a publisher, Francesco has worked with Anne Rice, Michael Crichton, and Dolly Parton. He developed and oversaw the marketing and creative campaign for the final book in the Harry Potter series, the launch of which broke every sales record in the publishing industry.
Currently, Francesco is promoting the third book in his graphic novel series, The Pathfinders Society. And in 2023, he will publish two picture books.

A Conversation with Georgia Pritchett
Georgia Pritchett is a multi-award-winning comedy and drama writer, who has five Emmys, six Writers Guild awards, two Golden Globes, a BAFTA and a Producer’s Guild award. She is currently a writer and co-executive producer on HBO's critically acclaimed show, Succession, which is currently filming the fourth season. Georgia was the co-executive producer and writer on the HBO multi-Emmy winning show Veep, which ran for seven seasons.
Georgia recently show-ran The Shrink Next Door for Apple TV: an adaptation of the hit podcast, it starred Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and Kathryn Hahn.

Conversation with Erin Kelly
Erin Kelly worked as a journalist before publishing her debut, The Poison Tree, which the ITV adapted for television. Since then, she’s published eight more psychological thrillers and in 2014 was chosen to write the novelisation of the BAFTA-winning Broadchurch. Her ninth book, The Skeleton Key, published in September.

*Kit de Waal*, born to an Irish mother and Caribbean father, was brought up among the Irish community of Birmingham in the 60s and 70s.
Her debut novel My Name Is Leon was an international bestseller, shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award, longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and won the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award for 2017. In 2022 it was adapted for television by the BBC.
Her second novel, The Trick to Time, was long-listed for the Women's Prize and her young adult novel Becoming Dinah was shortlisted for the Carnegie CLIP Award 2020. Kit is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Professor and Writer in Residence at Leicester University.

Conversation with Frances Quinn
Frances Quinn grew up in London and read English at King’s College, Cambridge, realising too late that the course would require more than lying around reading novels for three years. After snatching a degree from the jaws of laziness, she became a journalist, writing for magazines including Prima, Good Housekeeping, She, Woman’s Weekly and Ideal Home, and later branched out into copywriting, producing words for everything from Waitrose pizza packaging to the EasyJet in-flight brochure.
In 2013, she won a place on the Curtis Brown Creative novel writing course, and started work on her first novel. The Smallest Man was published in 2021 by Simon & Schuster with her follow up, That Bonesetter Woman, set for 2022. She lives in Brighton, with her husband and two Tonkinese cats.

Conversation with Joanne Harris
Joanne Harris (OBE, FRSL) was born in Barnsley in 1964, of a French mother and an English father. She studied Modern and Mediaeval Languages at Cambridge and was a teacher for fifteen years, during which time she published three novels, including Chocolat (1999), which was made into an Oscar-nominated film starring Juliette Binoche.
Since then, she has written 19 more novels, plus novellas, short stories, game scripts, the libretti for two short operas, several screenplays, a stage musical (with Howard Goodall) and three cookbooks.
Her books are now published in over 50 countries and have won a number of British and international awards. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022. She is a passionate advocate for authors’ rights, and is currently the Chair of the Society of Authors (SOA), and member of the Board of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS).

Never shy of a challenge, Jen has created organisations to improve everything from mental health to war-torn communities. She has won loads of awards including RED Woman of the Year and is a TEDTalk alumnae. Jen writes upmarket commercial fiction and modern fables for children.
Julia has been a professional copywriter, a world-renowned portrait photographer, and a You Tube star who danced with Patrick Swayze on Oprah. An avid fantasy and romance reader, she now writes romcoms about photographers.
