Marques Ogden came on the podcast originally in December 2019 prior to his book, The Success Cycle. He now returns 14 months later to discuss the journey since then and what he is focusing on now. UCF Standout, Tay Gowan, talks Road to NFL Draft
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by NFL 2021 Draft Prospect, Tay Gowan, from UCF.
Tay is the first guest on the show to make the decision to opt of his 2021 season due to COVID - you can imagine this was a big topic of discussion. This decision came off of his breakout season in 2020 where he emerged as a top cornerback in football at UCF. A health decision had to be made to preserve a business future.
Gown’s road to this point was anything but a straight line. After only one year of high school football, he earned a scholarship to the University of Miami (Ohio). After a stop there, he transferred to Butler to reboot the interest from collegiate teams which led him to UCF. Since Tay has not played since 2020, not many pundits are giving him the hype right now - but jump on his bandwagon now before he becomes a household name.

NFL Draft Prospect, Robert 'Scoota' Rochell, talks Senior Bowl & NFL Future
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by NFL 2021 Draft Prospect, Robert 'Scoota' Rochell.
Scoota came on the podcast leading up to the Reese's Senior Bowl which just concluded in late January. He had earned his invite to the premiere All-Star game after standing out as a shutdown corner for UCA (Central Arkansas). Robert is a small school prospect who much like Jeremy China and Kyle Dugger of last year's draft class, will be the subject of debate on if he can compete against bigger school prospects.
Rochell embraces the pressure of being the small school prospect. He stated he is ready to show up for all small school prospects as he works to win over scouts. At 6'2", 200 pounds with a ton of speed, suffice to say there will be a lot of intrigue around the soft-spoken Rochell throughout the process leading up to the NFL Draft. Jump on his bandwagon now before he becomes a household name.

2021 NFL Draft Prospect, Payton Turner, talks Senior Bowl, Houston and NFL Future
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by NFL 2021 Draft Prospect, Payton Turner.
Payton came on the podcast leading up to the Reese's Senior Bowl which just concluded in late January. He had earned his invite to the premiere All-Star game after standing out over the past 2 years as he masterfully navigated changing his position from defensive tackle to defensive end at University of Houston.
Payton is a hometown kid who didn't go far to pursue his NFL career at U of H. As a muti-sport athlete growing up, he brought size and athleticism to a defense that saw a multiple head coaches in his collegiate career. Turner was able to navigate scheme changes and position changes by applying his athleticism and a relentless work ethic which should pay him dividends in the NFL.

NFL 2021 Draft Prospect Jordan Smith talks Senior Bowl, UAB and NFL Future
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by NFL 2021 Draft Prospect and UAB Standout, Jordan Smith.
Jordan came on the podcast leading up to the Reese's Senior Bowl which just concluded over the weekend. He had earned his invite to the premiere All-Star game after a big year at UAB ending his 2 year stint there as a standout performer
Smith came to UAB via the JUCO program Butler. He actually was 4 star recruit out of high school who battled through some growing pains at Florida before he transferred to Butler. His road to the NFL hasn't been as easy as others, but that is why he brings a different level of maturity than most student-athletes his age.

Succeed in Life After the NFL with Vick Ballard
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former NFL Running Back, Vick Ballard.
Today, Vick is an engineering student with everything in front of him. However, Vick Ballard is likely most known for his rookie year (2012) when he tore it up for the Colts. Everything was going great as the Andrew Luck Era began. Then early in his second year he suffered a season ending injury. Vick battled back from that ACL tear to tear his Achilles Tendon and miss a second year.
This conversation is about what it takes to get to the NFL and battle back from injuries. But, more importantly, is it about how to take the tools that enable someone to do that - and then win in other areas of life. Vick has turned his attention to do much more beyond football, including helping other athletes transition to life after the NFL. Vick is living proof that once you understand how to be successful, you can apply it to anything.

Brian Michael Cooper, XFL Houston Roughnecks former President, on XFL / Success
Brian Michael Cooper talks through his XFL experience as President of the Houston Roughnecks. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former President of the XFL's Houston Roughnecks, Brian Michael Cooper.
Brian oversaw the best franchise of the XFL in 2020. While COVID came and disrupted this brilliant campaign, Brian still took the time to speak about his experience and break down why he, his team and the league had so much success.
Cooper came to this position with 20+ years as a sports professional and attorney. He currently is a partner at Frost, Brown, Todd in Houston and some of his notable previous job titles include:
- Senior Associate Athletic Director at Rice University
- NBA G-League RGV Vipers President
- Director of Sports Programming for DISH Network

Jarvis Green talks Patriots Days, Super Bowls and Shrimp! On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former Patriot and Broncos defensive lineman, Jarvis Green.
Jarvis has the distinction of playing for both Nick Saban and Bill Belichick in his football career. Add in winning 2 championships and Jarvis hit life after being an athlete with a resume second to none. So while we talked about the glory days - we also talked... Shrimp!

Success Mindset with Glyn Milburn
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former All-American and NFL Pro Bowl returner, Glyn Milburn.
Glyn was electric in his playing days at Stanford. When the Broncos drafted him in the 2nd round of the 1993 Draft, they knew they were drafting a special athlete. By 1995, Glyn was a Pro Bowl return specialist. After Denver, Glyn would ultimate play for the Lions, Bears and Chargers over the course of a 9 year NFL career (plus a brief stay in Green Bay). He set a NFL record of all purpose yardage in one game with 404 yards and his career ended with almost 13,000 return yards.
Milburn continued his football career after playing in the league. He was the General Manager and Executive VP of the Austin Wranglers of the AFL from 2004 - 2008. Now, Glyn is a Partner at Blackman and Associates. We speak on the mental strength Glyn built over the entirety of his career on the field and off. There is so much that can be learned from how he has approached his career and life overall.

NFL Salary Cap and Contracts with Emily Badis. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by Salary Cap and Contracts Analyst for the Atlanta Falcons, Emily Badis.
Emily is in her fourth year with Falcons. What started as an internship grew a position the team created for her in the football tech department. She talks about what her life looks like now (mid-season) vs. how that changes over the course of the year. We also walk through what her path was to get to this point in her career.
Badis is not shy about sharing her goals. She discusses her desire to grow into being more involved with the contract negotiations en route to becoming the first woman GM in the NFL. When you look at how much she has accomplished already, it’s hard to doubt her. I’m happy to bring you her story before she is a house hold name.

Patriots Dynasty talk with Lonie Paxton. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former 12 year NFL Long Snapper and 3x Super Bowl Champion, Lonie Paxton.
Lonie Paxton made the Patriots roster as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2000. He was a long shot to make the team coming out of Sacramento State but he defied the odds. He played on a 5-11 team that would go on to with 3 Super Bowls in the next 4 seasons.
Paxton would ultimately play 9 season in a Patriots uniform. After his career in New England he spent 3 more seasons in Denver before retiring a Patriot on a one-day deal. Since playing, Lonie worked extensively with GoPro before becoming a Strategic Consultant for a number of brands.

Richmond Webb - Dolphins Great - talks NFL Career
Richmond Webb highlights his NFL journey.
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by 7 time Pro Bowl Left Tackle, Miami Dolphins Ring of Honor member - Richmond Webb.
Richmond protected Dan Marino’s blindside for a decade in Miami. In 7 straight seasons, he was one of the best Tackles in the NFL and ultimately was named to the 90’s All-Decade team. Webb needs to be in the Hall of Fame, end of discussion.

Kellen Clemens highlights his NFL Journey. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former 12 year NFL Quarterback and Oregon standout, Kellen Clemens.
Kellen Clemens helped put Oregon on the map as his tenure helped usher in the spread offense they have become known for. His performance pushed him to become a second round draft pick for the New York Jets. His career would encompass the Jets, Redskins, Texans, Rams and Chargers.
Clemens talked through what his experience in the NFL was like. He saw a number of ups and downs just in New York, let alone how his career developed after his stint there. In his time since playing he has landed with Elateus as he continues the next phase of his professional career.

Brock Vereen highlights NFL Journey to Broadcasting
Brock Vereen highlights his NFL Journey which led him back home to California where he is in broadcasting on a few networks. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former safety (most notably for the Chicago Bears), Brock Vereen.
Brock developed into a standout player while at the University of Minnesota. His all-conference play as a senior earned him the right to be drafted by the Chicago Bears where he spent the bulk of his professional career. He just missed his brother Shane Vereen when he signed with New England which was one of the other stops before he retired.
Vereen walked away on his own terms and decided to pursue his passion of broadcasting. It did not take long before he hit the ground running. Today his skills are on display with Fox Sports, ESTV and Campuslore where his career is only continuing to pick up steam.

Levon Kirkland highlights his career on and off the field
Levon Kirkland highlights his NFL Career and life since being a professional athlete. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former pro bowler and linebacker, Levon Kirkland .
Levon is best known for his time as an inside linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. From 1992-2000 he patrolled the middle of the field earning multiple trips to the pro bowl. At 6’1” and 275+ pounds at times, he devastated running backs as part of the Steel Curtain. He finished his career after playing middle linebacker for 2 more seasons after leaving the Steelers (Seattle and Phily).
Kirkland is now working with the South Carolina Hall of Fame to connect with younger athletes. From spreading positive messages to helping athletes be successful off the field after the game, Levon is leading a purpose driven life. Cedric Peerman highlights his Faith and NFL Career
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former pro bowler and 4x team captain of the Bengals, Cedric Peerman.
Cedric Peerman was having a great career at the University of Virginia until he had a severe injury which sidelined him and his NFL dreams. It was through this experience that he really found his faith as a Christian and forged a road ahead. The new Cedric came back from his injury, got on the field and worked his way into being drafted in the NFL.
It wasn’t easy once he made it to the big show. He got an opportunity to make it with the Bengals and he never looked back. As a reserve running back and special teams star, he made the team and was named a captain for 4 of his seasons in Cincinnati along with earning a trip to the Pro Bowl. Chase Coffman talks Football Career and Financial Advising
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former All-American tight end and NFL athlete, Chase Coffman.
Chase was a prolific pass catcher at Missouri where every year he contributed to their high power offense. By the end of his collegiate career he was an All-American and Mackey Award winner en route to being drafted in the 3rd round to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Coffman ultimately played 8 years in the NFL for a number of different teams. After his career ended after the 2016 season, he decided to pursue a career as a financial advisor. He took the time to speak about his football career and some life lessons he learned that he brought to this next chapter of his life.

Leonard Weaver Highlights his Journey from the NFL to Coaching

Broncos Legend Karl Mecklenburg on his Career.
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former Broncos Ring of Fame linebacker, Karl Mecklenburg.
Karl had an incredible journey to get to the NFL. He left a 1/3 scholarship after two years at Augustana College to walk on at Minnesota. It was there he caught the eye of NFL scouts and was drafted in the 12th round. Karl relentlessly pursued making the team and ultimately learned to play all front 7 positions on defense.
Mecklenburg would go on to play 12 seasons in Denver. He totaled 79.5 sacks (3rd most in team history), 1,100+ tackles and played in 180 games. In his time since playing in the NFL, Karl has become a sought after keynote speaker.

Randy Cross and his 50+ year Football Journey
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former NFL offensive lineman, 3x Super Bowl Champ, and football media personality, Randy Cross.
Randy has dedicated his life to this game with over 50 years dedicated to this sport. He was an All-American at UCLA and was drafted in the second round to the San Francisco 49ers in 1976 and that is where he spent his entire career. In his 4th year, Bill Walsh took over as head coach for the team and a dynasty was under way.
By the time Randy retired after the 1988, he was a 3 time Super Bowl Champion. He also was either selected to a Pro Bowl or was All-Pro player 6 times. After his borderline Hall of Fame career on the field, he jumped over immediately to media and covered it. By now he is over 30 years in the media covering pro and collegiate football.

Jen Welter, the first female coach in the NFL, shares her story
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by the woman who broke the gender barrier in professional football by becoming the first female coach in 2015, Dr. Jen Welter .
Coach Welter has always loved football. There was just never a path for her to be near the game. It wasn’t until she was 22 years old that she had a chance to play in a woman’s league. She went on to earn 8 Pro Bowls in that league and win 2 gold medals in women’s football for team USA. This led to her being the first woman to play in a men’s league in 2014.
After earning the respect of her peers she became the first woman to coach in men’s professional football on that very same team’s staff. Next she forged a path into the NFL forever giving young girls a role model. Robert Turbin Details the Business of the NFL and his Career
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by NFL running back, Super Bowl Champ and host of the Turbo Talk podcast, Robert Turbin.
Robert was drafted in the 4th round of 2012 to the Seahawks in the same draft class as Russell Wilson, Bruce Irvin and Bobby Wagner (among others). This class played a pivotal role in the Seahawks franchise making two Super Bowls in the first 3 years these teammates were in the NFL. Before heading into his fourth year he was let go by Seattle.
Turbin bounced between Cleveland and Dallas before landing in Indianapolis where he played 2016-2018. IN 2019 Turbin was back with Seattle. While he prepares for his 9th NFL season, he also launched Turbo Talk, his own podcast. We talk about his career path, the podcast and the business side of the NFL that the players see.

Jonathan Hayes on his Football Journey to XFL Head Coach and GM
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former tight end, NFL Coach, and most recently the Head Coach/General Manager of the St Louis Battlehawks of the XFL, Jonathan Hayes.
Coach Hayes has lived an incredible ride through football. From playing under Coach Fry at Iowa, to playing in the NFL for Coach Schottenheimer and that coaching tree he had an amazing run as an athlete. That is second only to coaching with former Hawkeye teammate Bob Stoops at Oklahoma, to coaching tight ends with Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati for 16 seasons which led him to the XFL. An incredible career that is still being written.
Jonathan has a lifetime of insights into what makes successful athletes and teams. I did the best I could to dig into his road to success and what tips he picked up along the way. Cris Dishman on his NFL Career and Transition to Coach
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former All-Pro defensive back and football coach, Cris Dishman.
Cris is a football lifer. He started playing at an early age and worked himself into a pro bowl player for the Houston Oilers. He came in toward the end of their ‘House of Pain’ days and was with the team through Warren Moon’s spectacular play and the last year of the organization being in Houston. His 13 year career ended with him in Minnesota playing against Cris Carter and Randy Moss
Dishman took a few years off before he started his coaching career in NFL Europe. He went on to coach in the NFL, CFL, collegiately, the XFL and now he is at IMG Academy. On top of his four decades in football, Cris also operates GoatSkills.com where he puts out content to help athletes.

Darrel Young highlights his NFL Career and Life After the Game
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former 3-time captain of the Washington Football Team, Darrel Young.
Darrel was recruited to Villanova to play running back. He ultimately switched to defense where he earned a chance to compete to make a NFL roster. It was only after Coach Shanahan at Washington suggested the move to Fullback that Darrel was able to carve out a 9 year run in the NFL. He now is working in Player Engagement for the NFL.
Young helped multiple teammates make it to the Pro Bowl in Washington as he prided himself on his ability to help skilled position players hit their goals. As an athlete Darrel has been involved with the USO tour and has continually focused his efforts to volunteer and give back. Most recently he has been working with Warrior Rising to help veterans returning home.

Akeem Spence: NFL Doesn't Care About Its Athletes
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by 7 year defensive tackle in the NFL, Akeem Spence.
While the podcast normally dives into how to achieve success and overcoming obstacles, there is a different tune this time around. Akeem came in with a full head of steam!
Akeem is one of the very few active NFL players openly speaking out against what is going on. He shares some of his strong feelings on:
- How the NFLPA is failing the players
- The lack of safety/health protocols for COVID
- Why most player won't speak out like him
- How the NFL has failed to support it's players on race issues
I did my best to help guide some of the opinions Akeem wanted to share, but I mostly tried to stay out of his way so he was able to speak his mind - something, again, that few players are doing.

Logan Paulsen talks Washington and his NFL Career
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by 10 year Tight End in the NFL, Logan Paulsen.
Logan overcame long odds as a undrafted rookie free agent. Not only did he make the Washington roster over drafted athletes and veterans, he capitalized each and every year to be a mainstay at tight end for 6 years in D.C. We talk about how he was able to find a niche on the team and prepare as a multi-faceted player. After Washington, Logan would go on to play for Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta and Houston.
Paulsen felt the grind of being with 5 times in 5 years. The business side of the game took its toll on him and his family. We talk about how the decision to walk away became easier for him than it is for many. As he gets settled into life beyond being an athlete, it looks like he may get into commentating - but he has many doors open.

Vlad Ducasse highlights his NFL Journey and Life After
On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by former All-American and 9 year NFL offensive lineman, Vladimir Ducasse.
Vlad’s story is special. He emigrated to United States from Haiti as a teenager with a love for basketball and a desire to get a great education. Football just happened to fall into place for him as he grew into his frame. As a late bloomer and being late to the sport in high school, he didn’t have much fanfare until his senior year when he committed to UMass basically because it was the closest school to where he was!
Ducasse continued to develop to the tune of becoming a 2nd round draft pick to the New York Jets. He would ultimately have a 9 year career that also included stints with the Vikings, Bears, Ravens and Bills. Vlad now has re-enrolled back in school where he plans on getting his degree and pursuing a role scouting for a football program.

Juwann Winfree talks Broncos 2020 Football. On this episode of the Beyond the Helmet we are joined by second-year Denver Broncos wide receiver, Juwann Winfree.
Juwann ended his rookie season in 2019 on the IR - not the way he drew it up. He heads into 2020 ready to show what he’s capable of now that he’s fully healthy again. We talk about the road that led him to this point as he prepares for year 2.
Winfree opens up about learning a new offense this off season from Coach Shurmer. The whole off-season, from learning a new offense or being acquainted with new teammates, has all come from Zoom. Juwann is intent on not letting it slow him down as he looks to stand out among the crowded wide receiver corp for the Broncos.
