You Don’t Always Have to Pitch a Perfect Game
From the first time Gage Dollar picked up a bat as a tee-ball player in his youth, he was hooked. He went on to become a star pitcher for the Central High School baseball team in Phenix City, Alabama, and then for the Alabama State Hornets—years of experience that taught him about teamwork, appreciating one’s blessings, and the value of community in becoming a confident and authentic leader. Gage shares some of those lessons, along with what he’s learned as a husband and a new dad, with Nate Dewberry in this week’s podcast. Being part of an open and honest community—and being willing to accept and deal with failure—are two things Gage says will serve men well whether they’re in sports, business, ministry, or anything else.

First a Player, Then a Coach, Always a Disciple
“We have plans, but God directs our path,” says Omar Mance. His own life is proof of that: He went to LSU with hopes of making it to the NBA, but after sensing he needed something different in his life, he transferred to a smaller school, which set him on the road to becoming a coach and mentor. After coaching stints at a wide variety of universities, Mance founded The Circle Legacy, a nonprofit dedicated to helping men become mentors who can make a meaningful impact and leave spiritual legacies of their own. This week he talks with Nate Dewberry about sports, coaching, and being open to seeing how God can turn times of struggle or disappointment into something positive.

A Baseball Star Who Lost It All—and How He Got It Back
Blake Russell says he was “19 years old but with a Hollywood-sized ego” when he went from merely doing drugs to selling them. That arrogance would cost him a promising baseball career, a girlfriend—and, eventually, his freedom, as he spent years in prison for trafficking methamphetamine. In prison, though, he had a “sentimental moment” that guided him to God and forever changed his life. Blake, now out of prison and serving as ministry director of Take the City in Columbus, Georgia, talks with Paul Amos about that moment of salvation, the bad decisions that led up to it, and how his life has taken on newfound conviction, humility, and meaning since then.

An Identity Beyond Sports: Two Leaders Talk About FCA
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has been reaching out to schools to help young athletes build community, grow in their faith, and find an identity in Christ that transcends their accomplishments on the field of play. This week Paul Amos talks to two volunteers with FCA’s West Georgia chapter, area director Jonathan Karastury and Calvary Christian baseball coach Scott Donohoe, about FCA’s mission and how it tries to reach student-athletes and coaches alike. They also talk about their own experiences with sports and the defining moments that shaped their faith journeys.

Ian Morgan Cron is an Episcopal priest, therapist, and author who has written extensively about personality types and how they interact, as well as the “broken stories” we tell ourselves that perpetuate self-destructive behavior. Building Community When You’re On the Move
Though he’s still young, Army recon platoon leader Josh Babb has faced plenty of difficulties and dilemmas, from identity struggles to an unhealthy dependence on pornography to the challenge of finding community when you’re in the military and frequently on the move. But Josh says he managed to find the answers to all of those challenges and more in scripture, and his relationship with the Lord has never been stronger. Josh talks with Nate Dewberry about how he found his identity in Christ and learned to resist the lures of the flesh, as well as his advice for fellow service members who face isolation and temptation as they live the nomadic life of a modern soldier.

Stories of Hope and Restoration/The Fruits of Our Suffering
The theme for August at The Redeemed is stories of hope and restoration. Paul Amos and Nate Dewberry give a brief introduction to that theme in this short edition of The Redeemed Man podcast, emphasizing the importance of sharing our stories with one another—both the stories of our sins and failings and the stories of our triumphs. Ultimately, we have to remember that any truly inspiring redemption story has to include some struggle.
Mike Malone’s life has certainly seen its share of challenges and low points, but none were more devastating than the cancer diagnosis he received in 2016. His treatment and recovery were long and at times painful, but over the course of that struggle, he learned things that transformed his life—how his prior experiences had prepared him for the battle; how he could let go of anger and bitterness he’d been carrying around for years; and how God was using cancer to help him become a better man. Mike talks with Nate Dewberry about all these revelations in this week’s podcast, as well as the importance of a loving wife and what we should really be looking for when we open the Bible.

Some “adrenaline junkies” chase their thrills by climbing mountains, racing cars, or skydiving. But the adrenaline rush that compulsive gamblers get from placing bets is even more addictive—and far more destructive. This week Nate Dewberry talks with a recovered gambling addict about how he got hooked, how he nearly lost everything, and how he overcame his addiction. The big key, he says, has been the loyal support of family and friends, who continue to help him resist temptation and fill the surprisingly large time void that gambling left behind.

Leaving Pornography, Finding Wholeness
Getting a glimpse of one of dad’s Playboy magazines is so common it’s treated as a rite of passage for many men, but beneath that patina of innocence lies the potential for real and lasting damage. Rev. Michael Cusick was first exposed to porn at age 4 and by his teen years was a full-blown porn addict; it continued to blossom into a sex addiction that nearly destroyed his marriage. But he turned his life around and founded Restoring the Soul, a ministry that combines therapeutic principles with scripture to help men overcome unhealthy sexual dependencies. Michael talks with Paul Amos in this week’s podcast about the real damage porn addiction can do and how men can break free of it to lead more fulfilling lives.

Fatherhood is full of challenges, pitfalls, and opportunities to make mistakes. In the Bible, though, God has given us all kinds of instructions on how to overcome them. Wrapping up this month’s theme of fatherhood, in this podcast Nate Dewberry talks about those lessons and how we can apply them in our own lives as fathers. One of the best things we can do, he says, is to emulate toward our children the kind of father God wants to be toward us—relational, approachable, and above all, forgiving.

God, Father to the Fatherless
The epidemic of absentee fathers in America has hurt countless children and imperiled their futures, but there is still hope for people even when they’ve had to grow up without a father. In this podcast, two adult men who grew up without their fathers—Peyton Linder of Troy University at Phenix City and Chase Tucker of River of Life Church—discuss the struggles they faced as children and the mistakes they made trying to heal the “father wound.” But they also talk about how they’ve risen above those challenges—and how they’re trying to “break the cycle” of fatherly abandonment by spreading the Gospel and being the mentors and role models children and fathers alike desperately need.

Chinook Down: Trusting in God After a Life-Changing Ordeal
Few people have had their faith tested quite like Brad Palm has. A helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, Palm was dropping off some special forces on a mission in eastern Afghanistan when the rotors on his damaged MH-47 Chinook failed, resulting in a crash that killed one of his close friends. Seriously injured, blind in one eye, and facing the prospect of never flying again, Palm “wrestled” with discouragement and the thorny question of whether he could still trust in God, but found his faith and purpose renewed after “preaching the gospel to [him]self” and receiving the support and encouragement of his faith community. His story is sure to resonate with military members and anyone struggling with matters of faith.

Pain Rarely Stays Hidden
So often we think we’re doing the “noble thing” by keeping our pain and brokenness hidden; Matt Bostic knows all too well that this isn’t the case. In this podcast, Bostic tells the story of how he bounced from ministry to ministry in the wake of his mother’s death, eventually developing a drinking problem that took him to some of the lowest depths of his life. In the process of recovery, he learned that he didn’t have to take on all his problems and responsibilities alone—trusting other people, and God, helped him find the direction and purpose he was desperately seeking. Today, as the program director for Life House University, a ministry helping those who have recently got out of jail or rehab get a fresh start, Bostic says he’s found that not going alone is the best way to help yourself—as well as others in need.

Care-Sourcing: Connecting the Church with Those in Need
Rodney McClure, Founder & Lead Care Pastor of One Need, and Lance Osborne, the organization’s CEO join The Redeemed Man Podcast. Community churches are always getting requests for help from people in difficult financial situations, but they don’t always have the time, manpower, or resources to give those requests the attention they deserve. One Need partners with churches to review requests for assistance, determine what the actual need is, and broadcast the need to e-mail subscribers who can donate to help. “What the partnership with One Need allows that church to do is have a full-time benevolence team. It’s all we do,” Osborne says. “And because it’s all we do, we’re able to spend the right amount of time that it takes to go through that discernment process, because it’s in that conversation that we’re able to trust these people.”

Nate Dewberry, who was appointed director at The Redeemed in 2022, bringing extensive experience as a student, associate, and administrative pastor, as well as several semesters of seminary training. A native of Lineville, Alabama, Nate earned a degree in horticulture at Auburn University and worked for seven years in the Auburn area as a landscape designer. He moved to Columbus, Georgia when his wife, an army veteran, was transferred to Fort Benning; he worked for several months at Global Teen Challenge, a network of faith-based organizations providing addiction rehabilitation services. Nathan is the father of a son and two daughters, and he, too, is open about his life struggles, including a difficult divorce; he looks forward to using what he learned from those experiences to help men in crisis.

Finding Success in the Struggle - Guest: Gary Miracle

Pornography Addition Testimony - Guest: Greg Bainter
Greg Bainter joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Greg Bainter, who struggled for decades with a pornography addiction before finding the courage to confess his secrets to his wife and re-dedicate himself to a godly life. His “recovery” was aided by LiveFree ministries and its accountability app, through which he met other men who had battled similar addictions—and, eventually, younger men whom Greg was able to mentor using his own struggles and experiences.
Today Greg says he lives by three words: authenticity, vulnerability, and integrity. “I tell the guys I mentor, ‘If I slip up, I’m going to share that with you, even though I’m mentoring you. Because if you want to know me, you have to see me authentically, and that means the good and bad and the ugly. I just know that’s how I have to live my life going forward.”

Getting Free - Guest: Carl Thomas with Live Free
Carl Thomas joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Carl Thomas, who struggled with a pornography addiction for two decades before “getting free,” becoming an ordained pastor, and founding Live Free ministries to help other men stuck in a similar cycle of addiction.
A nationally certified neuro health coach, Thomas explains that porn is a symptom rather than a disease—“it’s just a thing that people turn to, like alcohol, drugs, overeating, or any number of things.” By focusing less on the shame aspect of addiction and more on the underlying issues that drive men to turn to porn as a distraction or escape, he says Live Free helps them break free of that dependency and gain a greater appreciation for the relationships and God-given blessings that truly make life worth living.

Courageous Love - Guest: Frank Schwartz, President of F3 Nation
Frank Schwartz joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Frank Schwartz, president of F3 Nation, with the Fs standing for “Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith.” F3 started in Charlotte, N.C., a decade ago simply as a way to provide fellowship opportunities for adult men through free, organized outdoor workouts.
As the workout sessions grew and friendships strengthened, the participants felt more at ease sharing their thoughts, issues, and frustrations. Today, not only do they support each other through difficult times, they combine their leadership talents for philanthropy and community projects. “By putting men on a mission again, the vast majority I believe will find it,” Schwartz says, “and will begin to ask those tough questions: OK, why am I here? What is it that I’m here to do so that I live out the best life I possibly can?” The F3 network currently includes nearly 3,000 separate groups in 40 U.S. states and several countries around the world.

Taking Off The Camo - Guest: Patrick Tyndall with Ironman Outdoors
Patrick Tyndall joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Patrick Tyndall, founder of Ironman Outdoors, in which men bond with each other over both hunting and discussion sessions that give them a chance to open up about their deepest fears and insecurities. Particularly for men who are disinclined to attend church regularly in the first place, traditional church environments can be a difficult place to be honest and reveal their true selves—to “drop their camo,” as Tyndall describes it.
But an IO hunting trip, he says, provides an engaging way for men to relax and bond with one another, even if they’re complete strangers. “If you put him in a hunting cabin or a lake house with 12 other men and they’re willing to take their camo off and say, ‘Hey, this is what I’m dealing with,’ then they’ll be more likely to take their camo off too.”

Discovering Grace - Guest: Trey Etheridge with MPACT Ministries
Trey Etheridge joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Trey Etheridge, a founder of MPACT Ministries in Melbourne, Florida (their tagline: “Discovering grace one man at a time”). Just as Church of the Highlands is a large organization that tries to offer localized worship and healing through its many locations, Jackson says people shouldn’t look only to their pastors for restoration; ideally, churches would provide small groups where worshippers can feel comfortable to open up and lean on each other for prayer and forgiveness. “We try to be a church of small groups, where people feel they can build trust, so as soon as something happens in their lives they have people they feel like they can turn to,” he says. “Where life-giving relationships are built, good things fall out.”

We want people to stop and pay attention to Jesus’ life, and then to walk in that path, not run around like a chicken with your head cut off—then you will find rest for your souls.”

If nothing else, he says, it’s important to remember that Jesus never shamed anyone, not even adulterers or prostitutes. “That makes our hearts free to say, ‘OK, I don’t want to have an affair, because that would take me out of this connection with real love,’” he says. “It would be like being on life support and taking the plug out of the wall—it’s not a punishment from God, it’s a consequence of being disconnected from Him.”

In teaching men how to reclaim masculinity from emasculation, false machismo, and “poserism,” Hansen says one of the best things they can do is examine the life of Jesus Himself—a man who was fierce and unapologetic in his opposition to selfishness and hypocrisy, but who was motivated by compassion and a sincere love for His fellow man. “G.K. Chesterton said that the fierceness of a warrior is determined not by the enemy in front of him that he hates, but by what he loves that he is fighting for,” Hansen explains. “And that really does describe the heart of Jesus. The greatest motive we can live for is love, and that’s what Jesus did.”
