In 1998, southeast road dogs Jupiter Coyote released their 5th album but first on Roadrunner called "Here Be Dragons" - Coyote with Roadrunner seems like a match made in Acme Acres! But an anvil wasn't tha only thing to drop.
Band frontman Matt Mayes tells us about starting their own label, helping Sister Hazel start their career, getting a timely guest spot from Edwin McCain, tha songs on tha album, and heartbreak of being an Atlanta Hawks fan.

Star Star - The Love Drag Years (1992) [w/ Johnnie Holliday of Star Star]
STAR STAR MEEP MEEP
On this episode we're going back to NINETEEN NINETY TWO with an album that pre-dates all of tha false cries that Roadrunner had suddenly moved away from their metal roots.
You see, tha same year that RR would release THE END COMPLETE by Obituary, LEGION by Deicide, and SOUL of a NEW MACHINE by Fear Factory among plenty more examples they would also put out an album by a band called STAR STAR entitled tha LOVE DRAG YEARS and Star Star was many things but... decidedly not death metal.
What many may not realize is Roadrunner never wanted to be a death metal boutique label and from tha very beginning they were trying out various things searching for great bands that could sell records.
So enter Star Star, a 90s band with an 80s sound influenced by the 70s. The Love Drag Years was full of catchy anthems that would have fit in with the sleaze of Motley Crue more than the sludge of Suffocation.
The formation of this band and making of this album is a pretty wild ride but luckily we had a guide in frontman and main member Johnnie Holiday, who takes us from New York to LA and back again...

Make Them Suffer - Neverbloom (2012) [w/ Sean Harmanis of Make Them Suffer]

On this episode we celebrate a milestone or in this case...
a kilometerstone because we're dicussing 10 years of Australia's Make Them Suffer releasing their debut full length album NEVERBLOOM on Roadrunner Records.
Make Them Suffer's story of landing on the big bird is a unique one as they were potentially the only successful use of a system used at the time called SIGN ME TO ROADRUNNER which was a website unsigned bands would upload their demos to in hopes of getting a record deal!
Vocalist Sean Harmanis takes us through the band's origins and their process through making this album, the local scene they experienced in Perth, Studio Ghibli movies influencing his writing process, the use of keyboards in their songs, their first tour being exclusively by public transportation, and the natural evolution of their sound to the MTS of today.
And if you love this album already or are psyched to jam it after hearing it's biography, it has recently been remastered and re-issued on streaming platforms everywhere and on vinyl for tha first time through Greyscale Records!...in full color.

Shinedown - Amaryllis (2012) [w/ Brent Smith of Shinedown]
2022 is tha 10 year anniversary of Shinedown's album "Amaryllis" released in all territories outside of tha USA on Roadrunner Records.
Amaryllis had tha pressure of following tha biggest Shinedown release to that point, SOUND OF MADNESS, and also was on a new label home of Roadrunner.
It produced some of tha best received songs in tha band's live catalog and seems to have grown fonder in their fan's eyes through time, but not without plenty of hurdles to get it there!
Brent Smith of Shinedown takes us through a journey of getting to this album, making it, and all tha lessons along tha way!

Both Worlds - Memory Rendered Visible (1998) [w/ John "Bloodclot" Joseph]
Meepery Rendered Visible. That one's too easy.
In tha late 90s, ex-Cro Mags frontman John Joseph teamed up with AJ Novello, Eddie Coen, and Pokey from Leeway and formed Both Worlds. They put out one EP and one album, a full length on Roadrunner Records in 1998 with guest Meepsters Mina Caputo of Life of Agony and Derrick Green of Sepultura. It rocks.
Fast forward 20+ years later and John is still surrounded by Meep with his current band Bloodclot in former bassist Manny from Glassjaw, current bassist Christian from Fear Factory, and producer Laz of ill Nino.
Memory Rendered Visible is an awesome album that if you're aware of you'll be excited to hear more about and if you didn't know, we're gonna smarten you up to tha business kid!

DevilDriver - The Last Kind Words (2007) [w/ Mike Spreitzer of DevilDriver]

15 years ago this week, July 31 of 2007, DevilDriver released their 3rd album THE LAST KIND WORDS, which was a pivotal moment in their career.
They were coming off tha good will of THE FURY OF OUR MAKER’S HAND which has distanced themselves from tha shadow of their self-titled debut and larger than life frontman, Dez Fafara, who had already enjoyed success in Coal Chamber.
Now it was DevilDriver’s turn establish what they were and would go on to be! Guitarist then-and-now Mike Spreitzer tells us about tha headspace going into it, conflicts during it, working with producer Jason Suecof, Ozzfest, & where The Last Kind Words falls into DevilDriver's canon today.

They say you have 10 years to make your most relevant material - nobody told Terror. Two decades later they're making their most important music to date but in between tha instant classics their first two records & their modern masterclass in core "Keepers of the Faith", they did not choose to make it easy.
2006's "Always the Hard Way" was their first after guitarist Todd Jones' departure & would set tha tone for what Terror would do next. With Todd gone, drummer Nick Jett took tha songwriting reigns & made an album often overlooked but just as crushing as their hallmarks.
And you don't have to blade to hear about tha Hard Way; it's easy!

Resident Evil Soundtrack (2002) [w/ Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method and Mike Ransom of Adema]

That's what that brat says in tha movie RESIDENT EVIL starring Milla Jovovich but tha stars of this episode are soundtrack contributors THE CRYSTAL METHOD whose huge hit Name of the Game is included. Scott Kirkland of TCM tells us about making the song with Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, Ryu from Styles of Beyond, and DJ Swamp as well as touring Family Values, and collaborating with the star of Resident Evil - Milla Jovovich.

Twelve Tribes' 2004 album "The Rebirth Of Tragedy" is, in many ways, a "rebirth" for tha band themselves. After briefly changing their name to Prodigal Zoo in 2003 and shifting a few key members, they re-emerged with an album that tops everything they'd done before it.
Tha TRAGEDY is that they're not still a band today and probably not given the adulation they deserve for this incredible album. So vocalist Adam Jackson took tha time to run through tha tribal customs that led to these songs and finally answer tha age old question...
Did they name this record after tha Vision of Disorder song?!

Their debut album, tha heavily dub-influenced "A Normal Family" is great but tha follow up in '98 for Roadrunner "DUM DUM BABY" is one of my across-tha-board FAVORITES!
It's like if tha Fight Club soundtrack had your guardian angel singing warnings over it while your false ego is rapping in your ear to roll tha dice.

Karma to Burn - Karma to Burn (1997) [w/ Rich Mullins of Karma to Burn & Howie Abrams, A&R]

Karma to Burn are a unique entry into the Roadrunner catalog - an INSTRUMENTAL band...who release a non-instrumental album on Roadrunner.
K2B started as all riffs and no vocals but when Howie Abrams signed them to tha label, expectations were that they'd get a frontman to bring their message to tha MASSED and as you'll hear...that was easier said than done.
Their incredibly talented leader Will Mecum unfortunately passed away in 2021. This album however lives on whether he likes it or not & we have his partner in literal crime Rich Mullins to take us from the beginning to... Well you'll see where it goes.
We're also joined once again by tha man Howie Abrams to tell us about one of his final projects for RR, how he helped them release tha fully instrumental follow-up with his friend Peter Nussbaum, and Karma being courted by a member of Metallica!

Vision of Disorder - Imprint (1998) [w/ Matt Baumbach & Mike Fleischmann of V.O.D. and Brian Audley of Incendiary]

In 1996 Vision of Disorder released what is now considered a classic with their self-titled "green drip" album but tha band wasn't satisfied with that sound. They knew they could do better - and now we do too!
In 1998, "IMPRINT", tha relentless follow-up was unleashed complete with a Phil Anselmo guest spot, recording with producer Dave Sardy, and a nationwide Triple Meep Attack tour with Earth Crisis & Sepultura!
Tha Visionaries themselves Matt Baumbach & Mike Fleischmann leave their mark on our minds about tha entire process as well as tha prelude (Resurrecting Reality), epilogue (For the Bleeders, From Bliss to Devastation), and quintessential V.O.D. songs.
In addition, Brian Audley from modern Long Island hardcore heroes INCENDIARY reminisces about his early exposure to Vision of Disorder and their legacy today.
There's no slumping on this sophomore and V.O.D. is for EVERYBODY on this Meep Meep!

Faktion - Faktion (2006) [w/ Marshal Dutton of Hinder]

It's tha 15 anniversary of Roadrunner releasing Denton, TX band FAKTION's self-titled debut.
Riffmaster Meepster Marshal Dutton from that band has now gone on to front platinum selling powerhouse HINDER who I first saw with EIGHTEEN VISIONS in '06.

Doc has seen and done it all including being one of tha four ghastly ghouls who graverobbed across tha world in the Misfits. Vampiro brought tha monsters to mash with him in World Championship Wrestling.

Sepultura - Nation (2001) [w/ Derrick Green of Sepultura & Ramón Ortiz of Puya]
It's time to be a colorguard for tha metal marching band of Sepultura as we fly tha flag of NATION...their FINAL album for Roadrunner Records, released 20 years ago in 2001.
This is tha 2nd release with current vocalist Derrick Green and would set tha tone for tha future of tha band as his various unique vocal styles and songwriting methods would more seamlessly meld with Sepultura riffage and rhythms we knew before!
When Nation was released Sepultura toured on it with Flybanger, Primer 55, Hatebreed, & PUYA.

I never planned on this; Big Meep Evangelist!
In 1997 Roadrunner Records released the debut album by Tom Holkenborg, better known the world over as Junkie XL. Tom a few years later would score a worldwide #1 hit with some guy named Elvis and presently scores worldwide movie releases like Justice League but there was a time when he was a real rock'n'rolla.
"Saturday Teenage Kick" formed a band around it and spawned hits like Billy Club and the title track with tha Silver Surfering Rudeboy Remington Patrick Tilon handling the vocals of the digital onslaughts, Dino Cazares of Fear Factory rockin' tha riffs, and Tom putting it all together in a way only he can.
Lucas van Slegtenhorst is the A&R rep who signed JXL early in both of their careers and tells the tale of the Computer Hell genesis.
So don't be an underachiever, X-Pand your limits 'cause this one is streaming NOW!!!

In 1997, wanting to get in on tha ever dominating "alternative" scene, Roadrunner acquired a small indie label called CherryDisc from Boston, MA who'd had success with Semisonic & Letters to Cleo among others. Among those who made tha migration from CD to RR were BOY WONDER whose sole full-length "Wonder-Wear" came out on tha Big Bird.
They were fronted by former Dropnineteens guitarist Paula Kelley and she takes us on tha journey to and through tha album! One band on CherryDisc who did NOT move were TREE. Frontman Dave "River" was featured on Shootyz Groove's RR release but never got one to himself. He tells about recording that song "Diamond Mind" with Shootyz as well as other TREE TRIVIA like being covered by Powerman 5000.
