When a shop window was all we had to promote our business (and maybe a billboard or two) we took such pride in making that shop window fancy as we could to get people through the door.
These days the internet has provided MANY shop windows, and we really need to ensure we’re across all our digital ‘shop windows’

Michelle Kvello is the founder of Lantern Partners, a virtual CFO firm, working with founder CEOs of start ups and scale ups. We're in a world where now where consumers CARE.
They care about what you care about as a business and the impact you have on the world.
Consumers are willing to create relationships with brands that are ethical, and that share their values, morals, and ethics when marketing to customers (and live to them). Consumers care about a brand's purpose and social and environmental impact, and businesses are being asked to create a purposeful brand.

Getting Vulnerable, Sharing your story and why this builds genuine connection
Today Kelly Irving teaches us an important lesson about the power of genuine connection and vulnerability.
She noticed that when people write content, they tend to hide behind a mask, instead of being real and genuine with their audience.
She realized that when people write content, they need to think of it as a two-way conversation between them and one other person and they need to understand who they are communicating with, why they need their work, and what their challenge is.
Through learning this lesson, she's learnt that writing a book, or any content isn't about positioning yourself as an expert, it's about creating a genuine connection with your audience. Choosing to use your voice and share your story is the key to a genuine connection.

Yep, I hate this expression because there isn't one.
Like anything in life, there are no quick fixes... and when there are we should be asking questions.
People think marketing will act as a silver bullet... it doesn't.
The best Marketing is that which is well thought out, starts internally, and is strategic.

Marketing is a department, not a person
You wouldn't hire generic "tradie" to fix your leaky gas pipe. Just like you wouldn't (shouldn't) hire "generic" marketer to take care of your marketing.
Marketing is the overall umbrella, within it you will find a specialist for each and element that makes up the marketing realm.
After being and working with clients and teams of all sizes I quickly learnt marketers are expected to know everything and be a jack of all trades, but that isn't the case if you want quality, expertly driven marketing. Different aspects of marketing such as SEO, Google, social media, and advertising all require specialized knowledge.
Further to this, I believe that good marketing starts internally with you - or your team, and it is important to outsource for specific talent when necessary.

How much marketing is too much marketing?
Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount of marketing content you’re currently seeing.

Latest stats estimate that we see anywhere from 6-10K ads per day.

When sales scripts dehumanize your brand
Have you ever gotten caught on a phone call or lost in direct messages and felt incredibly ick because you know for a fact that person is just following some sales script that was given to them probably by a sales or business coach and it’s just completely disingenuous to their brand and product they’re representing.
I hate most sales scripts.
There I said it.
Sure they have their place.
But they also dehumanise brands and buzzword make the person reading/writing the script seem so in-authentic.
So when you’re not a natural sales person & you need help with how to sell how can you use these scripts in a way that is true to your brand?

Negative Language
I often hear negative language used in marketing and I instantly feel icky.
You may or may not be aware that we have a subconscious reaction to certain words whether we are aware of it or not.
So I always encourage my clients to use positive or neutral language and wording in their marketing, even when talking to the problem.

Software Integration
Often when I start working with businesses they have amazing software, or are thinking of integrating it but I see these common issues
They already have too many systems and are unable to tell you the source of truth with their data
None of their systems are ‘talking’ to one another so getting accurate reporting is a challenge
They’re paying for more than they need too
They’re not using these systems efficiently and to their advantage
This is a challenge because it leads to poor marketing reporting and poor visibility of ROI (return on investment.)
I encourage you to look deeply into your systems and optimise them to be more efficient and save budget.

When a platform releases a new way to produce content do I really need to do it?
Controversial opinion here…. But as I always say if it doesn’t reach your target market and it doesn’t produce good ROI…. Then don’t spend your precious time working on something which won’t reap results… and more importantly if it doesn’t align with your brand OR you don’t have a killer strategy to go with it.

Why social media followers is not the only metric you need to care about
Social media is such a hype at the moment, especially platforms like Instagram and TikTok, everywhere you see people are creating reels and videos following the latest dance trends and somehow a good marketing strategy got caught up in the BS that is social media metrics.
YES social media is a fantastic way to organically grow your database
BUT the most important things to remember are:
You’re better off with 500 followers that are engaged and want to buy and are your target, than 50K that are just following you cause
Don’t waste time creating reels if its not right for your customer and you’re doing it for vanity metrics
A lot of people on social media are consumers who will not engage, so even though only 10 people liked your post, it may have actually reached 50 people 10% of which are watching you waiting until they’re ready to buy – this is especially true on LinkedIn.

What is a good open rate for email marketing?
So you are emailing your database go you!
You are better than a lot of businesses that have set up Mailchimp accounts which get used approximately twice a year, once at Christmas and once at some other time they remember.
Email marketing has ebs and flows of popularity and success.
Due to the incredible amount of emails sent daily it is easy to say ‘I won’t do that no one would read it anyway’
BUT with that strategy what if you miss a huge opportunity?
We’re only as good as our content, and while you focus solely on growing an Instagram following, or LinkedIn following unfortunately that data is not yours.
So congrats if you are emailing your database regularly.. here’s for the real stuff.
In 2020 the average open rate of emails sent in Australia was 18.7% - now you might think that seems incredibly low, but please see my point above re: how many emails are sent a day.

What should i look for in a marketing agency
With my experience in Marketing Manager roles within corporate, I would often manage external experts in the form of digital agencies to help out where I didn’t have capacity, or I didn’t believe my expertise were good enough OR I just wanted external help.
Having started my own marketing agency this has given me a good understanding of what my customers are looking for in an agency, but also what I will offer and who I will partner with myself.
Things to keep in mind
* Try and find someone who offers to manage all the aspects of marketing and offer a whole marketing solution (so not just social / not just SEO/AdWords)
* Don’t settle for a one size fits all, make sure they give you indication that they can work on YOUR UNIQUE business
* Understand your budget, what you need and be specific
* If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

How can I set achievable ROIs
Do you know the return on investment on the marketing activities you currently do?
Return on investment involves so many different facets of the business.
For example, one key thing to consider is are you tracking the LEAD or the SALE as ROI?
Because there are two parts to this
* If the leads entering the business are quality but not being converted marketing IS doing it’s job
* If the leads coming into the business aren’t quality and therefore are wasting your time, you can’t count this towards ROI.
This is why a great CRM is a good idea for any business so that you can be qualifying the quality of your leads, rather than just focusing on the quantity.
Another key point to ROI is how you be physically tracking it!
For example, did you undergo a big branding campaign which involved non-digital aspects and therefore your way to judge the ROI was through basic ‘how did you hear about us’ or have you done a branding campaign which you will just have to use the old ‘…

One of my favourite topics is about how to really understand your customers.
Before we begin any marketing we really need to get deep into understanding our customers, this includes getting a feel for what makes them tick, where they hang out, what keeps them up at night.
A lot of us have been our ideal customer so we really understand them. Because we have been there.
But what if you have never been your customer? We then need to find why they’re our ideal customer, why we care about providing them with a product/service, it is most likely because we do have a connection with them. We feel their pain, or we see it.

Do i need a website? How do I start creating one?
We know that websites are expensive. I have great respect for the website developers out there.
But how do you get a functional website without breaking the bank?
If you are a small business starting out then by all means it is ok to create a website that gets the job done, you don’t need the bees’ knees yet of websites (yet!)
However… If you are in a niche market where you can smash SEO and there isn’t competition in the space… spend the money! There are great web developers out there who will not charge you the earth but will give you a great website solution and help you reach those SEO goals.
Also, if you are a small business owner with minimal time because you have customers and you are busy serving them, then why are you trying to create your own website?
What value do you put on your time?
If your time is better spent in the business, rather than working on the website…
Well, the ROI is going to make the initial spend worth it anyway!

How to get clear on your product offering
One of the biggest things us service-based businesses do is to change our product depending on the customer.
But how does this help us align our businesses with who we want to work with?
If we do not articulate our product well then, we are NOT easy to buy.
For those of us who have moved from corporate into the entrepreneurial world we need to remember our product offering cannot be the position that we held within our “job”
One of the ways that we make it hard for our customers to know that we are buyable is because we do not break it down into simple offerings, which even as a service based, B2B business you are able to do.
Before you start your marketing journey it is important to be clear on how someone is going to purchase you and what you want to offer them!
We cannot be a ‘shopping list’ of goodies for a customer because this will just have us doing everything and this is not the reason we got into business.

Where do I start with my marketing?
The biggest question I receive is “where do I start with my marketing?”
There is no “big bang” with marketing.
There is no essential place to start.
It is about to dos and writing lists.
The simple question I ask back to this is ‘well what do you want to achieve ‘
Then the other questions
Who is your customer?
What is your product and service?
Before you begin your marketing journey you NEED to dive into your business.
You need to be so clear on your business and your business journey.
Once you have deep dived into your business and your why, your customer and your product you can then put together your spreadsheet to map your channels and your messages.
Doing it in say a spreadsheet allows you to ensure each channel is spreading that same message.
