Debate or Dehumanization: How Do We Talk About the People We Do Not Agree With?

The recent US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade has led to heated debate on both sides of the topic. I personally am pro-choice and find the decision apaling. However, I draw the line at wishing harm on the Supreme Court justices. I have seen death threats made against the justices and hurtful, dehumanizing remarks made about them. So I ask, can we disagree with someone without wishing them evil? Can we feel angry, hurt, even violated without turning political opponents into subhumans that we take joy in seeing harmed? I turned to a trusted source, Brene Brown, and her book "Braving the Wilderness" to get some insight into this topic. Brene says, "We must never tolerate dehumanization- the primary instrument of violence that has been used in every genocide recorded throughout history."
