Want to only work 6 months a year? Become a Merchant Mariner
Erin Hulti was in that in between space, trying to figure out what she wanted to do in life, when of all places, she was having blood drawn and her conversation with the phlebotomist triggered her career choice.
She is enrolled at Cal Maritime to receive her major in Marine Transportation. She just spent 90 days interning on an oil tanker and loved it.
She will receive her Merchant Mariner license at the end of her four year studies.

Korean Friends Visit Oregon - Climbing, Exploring, Cultural Differences, Social Change
* Welcome to the Women of the Northwest podcast, hosted by Jan Johnson. In this episode, Jan introduces surprise guests Se-eun and Ye Jin, friends of her daughter Emily.
* Se-eun, from South Korea, shares how she met Emily during her visit to Korea and how she finally got the opportunity to visit her friends in the United States.
* Ye Jin, also from South Korea, talks about her experience living in the States for eleven years due to her father's academic pursuits and her subsequent return to South Korea. She discusses the challenges of maintaining her English proficiency and the differences in education systems between the two countries.
* Jan explores their recent trip to Oregon, highlighting the scenic landscapes they encountered during their four and a half hour drive from Bend to Brownsmead. They discuss the beauty of the river, forest, and blue sky, as well as the sight of the Three Sisters and Mount Hood.

From Tanzania to Seaside, Sophia Komba is a pharmacist, wife and mother
Sophia grew up in Tanzania in a household with her five siblings, where taking in guests and those in need was a way of life. Living in the country taught her to garden, and care for farm animals.
She talks about school there, where one has to choose three subjects which will determine your future path.
She was able to receive a diversity visa to come to the United States to study to become a pharmacist. This visa is given by lottery.
She lived with her cousin in Virginia and was so surprised to see how many roads there were, especially that they were paved.
She chose pharmacy because she thought she could make a difference.

Bush Pilot to Brain Integration- ever wonder why it's hard for you to learn?
Dierdre Whitehead spent a number of years in Alaska where she and her husband were bush pilots- delivering mail, groceries, things that were need in the back countries and islands.
They spotted for herring, which could sometimes be a bit nerve-wracking.
As an employee with the newspaper, she worked in the darkroom, developing photos. An art that might be long gone since everything is now digital.
Her passion, though, was when she discovered Brain Integration and how to administer it to alleviate attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, and more.

13 yr old advocates for mental health
Shaelyn Bangs is 13 years old and wants her voice to be heard as a proponent of pediatric mental health.
As someone who has lived with anxiety most of her life, she has had to learn to navigate the mental health services available to her.
It took three years for her to receive the care she needed.
As a dancer, she has won numerous awards.
Her goal is to get an engineering degree so she can make robots to send to NASA.

From Reporter to Mother of Triplets to Restoring a Castle
Today’s guest is Debbie Hazen, a long time Clatskanie Oregon resident. She grew up in a family of newspaper reporters and later became owner and editor of the Clatskanie Chief.
She has always loved being involved in her small town community, volunteering and she doesn’t let anything stop her to make things happen- even while raising triplets.
As a long-lost relative of the Birkenfelds, she was able to access funds to restore the old event center and later to restore and manage the Flippin Castle.
This woman knows a lot of history!

Following her passion for libraries
Kelsey Balensifer got her degree in journalism and first job in Washington DC.
That's when she met a friend on Twitter who led her to the Pacific Northwest and
eventually became her husband.
She was the event director at the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce.
One event was planning the Great Columbia Crossing and all that goes with it including coordinating with ODOT, local hospitality, advertising and weather reports.
Her current passion is with the Friends of the Warrenton Community Library.

How Soccer, being an Exchange Student and one of seven led to the Airforce Reserves
Soriah Curtis grew up as one of seven children.
Her dad had been a marine and they moved a number of times.
Being from an abusive family drove her to excel in everything-
soccer, gymnastics and academics.
She spent her junior year of high school as an exchange student to Denmark,
an experience which turned out to be anything but what she expected.
She returned to a downward spiral until she found out she could join the
reserves, where she once again excelled.
She has now found meaning with a group of young adults.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced her to move and find other opportunities.
She was able to take advantage of reduced college costs in Oregon for refugees and took her jr year of photography at University of Oregon. She then returned to New Orleans to get finish her degree at University of New Orleans.
She currently works as a full time photographer and in her spare time

when she married Dirk Rohne and became a dairy farmer's wife.

Exploring Weather Patterns for Farmers in Uganda
Summer Spell graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a degree in Global Studies. She spent a semester in Uganda staying with a host family. She did an internship with elderly farmers who were struggling agains poverty. She listened to stories from 80-90 year olds. They talked a lot about the changes in the weather patterns since they were young. It used to be predictable, to the day, but in the last decade, the pattern has fallen apart. The sun was getting harsher on their crops.
She participated in creating a documentary about these people and the effects.

Charlotte Langsev's history began in Koenigsberg, East Prussia, where her mom was born.
Her dad was in the army for Kaiser Wilhelm before the First World War.
They moved from there, to Germany, to Blumenau, Brazil, to Edmonton, Canada and finally to Brownsmead, Oregon.
She tells of growing up in Brownsmead, the first school and family history.

Ella Zilli - an extraordinary teen making an impact on her world

Ella is a high school senior who is comfortable taking on multiple projects at once.
Not only does she excel in track, she has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, led a drive that donated over 1,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly to the food bank, and has been president of a number of clubs.
Her most recent project was working at the Sea Turtle Conservancy in Panama.
She is employed at the OBON Society, which returns items lost in the war to their families in Japan.

Jazmin Geografo left the city of Manilla, Philippines (population 21 million) to try her hand at teaching science in the United States, specifically, the small town of Knappa, Oregon, (population 1800)
Originally, she sought to become a journalist major, but plans changed when she wasn't admitted to her preferred school.

Lilly Lee on Growing up Chinese, Peace Corps in Botswana, Electrical Engineer
Lilly Lee loves gardening.
She took time off after receiving her degree in Electrical Engineering to join the Peace Corps. She spent time in Botswana where she was able to teach engineering to high schoolers and made life-long friendships.
When she returned, she received a second major as a physical therapist. She worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, Oregon until she needed extensive back surgery due to ankylosing spondylitis.

Julia Akilimali- Ruwandan, Job Corps, IT, Paralyzed
Julia Akilimali grew up in Maryland with her three brothers and seven sisters. Her dad was Ruwandan and emigrated to America as a refugee from Congo during the war.
She attended Job Corps in Astoria and received a degree in IT, then continued on to study at Clatsop Community College. Her next step is to pursue a psychology degree where she can marry IT with it to create adaptive technology.
She works at a memory care in Warrenton.
When she was 17, she was in a severe car accident which left her paralyzed from the neck down.

Laura Jeka- German Exchange Student
Laura Jeka is a German exchange student attending school as a senior at Knappa High School in Oregon.
She is from Trieste, Saxony, the state that borders Czech and Poland.
The organization is ACES- American Culture Exchange Service and the website is exploretheworld.org
She talks about the differences between school in Germany and here, the process of becoming an exchange student and the joys of rural life.
German schools offer only academics, so finding out that she could participate in sports, photography, ceramics and other electives has been a joy.

Cara Aguilar (Jacobson)-When Your Family has Huntington's Disease
Cara (Rodli, Jacobson) Aguilar lived in Knappa for 30 years.
She married Kyle Jacobson right out of high school and soon became a parent of 5 kids- one which they adopted from Haiti.
While she navigated being a home school mom, her husband , at 32, was diagnosed with the genetic Huntington's Disease which affects the brain and neurosystem.
Life became very challenging when he could no longer work and his motor and speech became vastly affected. At 40, he passed away.
Soon after, three of her children were diagnosed with the same illness. Her youngest son, Marshall, died at age 16. Her son Bodean, age 21 is in hospice. Her daughter, Daisha, age 26 is exhibiting increasing disability.
And yet- she is able to live one day at a time, secure in her faith.

Lauri Serafin spent many years sailing -in fact that's how she met her husband.
She's a genealogist, restores historic houses which has led to a love of creating historic needlework, crocheting lace and finding just the right historic decor. S
he volunteers at the Flavel house, is a docent, is on the board of the Cascadia Chamber Opera and is creating an avenue for her Pint Size Opera. One of her greatest joys was being a roller derby ref.

Mary Lovell- 100 years old, Kappa Kappa Gamma, PEO, PE
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Mary Lovell who will turn 100 on February 23. She lives at Clatsop Retirement Village in Astoria where Judy Atkinson joined me to record this interview.
Mary has lived an interesting life and doesn’t look a day over 80. She shares about growing up in Astoria, going to University of Oregon, being a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and PEO Chapter FE which she helped begin. She tells about her memories of living through the great depression, getting married before she finished her teaching degree, then becoming an aide at Astor School to teach PE and work in the library. She played organ at Grace Episcopal Church for the youth choir and has attended all of her adult life. Her family see her as "being brave, intelligent, with a great ear for music and a wonderful sense of humor.”

Katie George- Backpacker, Physician's Assistant, Pyography and Watercolors
My guest today is Katie George. Katie is an avid backpacker and has hiked in Yasuni National Park in Ecuador, Denali, North Cascades, Alpine lakes and Crater Lake among others. She has just finished her degree and works at Columbia Memorial Hospital as a physician’s assistant. She did research in Ecuador and Panama, worked in Alaska and is an amazing artist. Her current passion is pyography, woodburning, but also does watercolors, oils, pen and ink and charcoal.

Nancy Trenbeth - Championing Students with Special Needs

I’m delighted to have as my guest today, Nancy Trenbeth, who spent over 40 years championing students with special needs. Her teaching career included work with deaf/blind students, many of which as a result of the rubella epidemic, those in wheelchairs with multiple challenges and those who were severely emotionally disturbed.
She adopted one of her students who was severely neglected and is now 56 years old but still functions as a 4 year old.

Melissa Reid - Teacher, Peace Corps, Reading Teacher of the Year, Camp Kiwanilong

Melissa tells about her adventures with Peace Corps in Honduras and life in Romania.
She speaks a number of languages, but is fluent in Spanish. She has raised her two children to be bilingual, both speaking and reading.
She was named Reading Teacher of the Year and helped get Camp Kiwanilong, a youth camp situated in Warrenton, Oregon, off the ground.
Currently she teaches in Knappa, Oregon.

Constance Waisanen - Fiber Artist, Habitat for Humanity, Chemical Engineer, Financial Advisor
Today’s guest is Constance Waisanen, a very creative and inspirational woman.
Her hobbies include gardening, quilting, music, and her current passion is Fiber Arts, specifically fabric dyeing.
She has been to a number of countries working with Habitat for Humanity.
Her degree in Chemistry Engineering led her to a job with the Wauna Mill for 27 years.
Seeking a career change, she became a financial advisor where she enjoys counseling people on quality of life and legacy planning.

Candy Yiu- Hong Kong, Gary Hirsch robots, Educational Jouney
Today’s guest is Candy Yiu who lives in Portland and Astoria. She owns a Boutique Hotel called Near the Pier on Franklin St. and also began, along with her husband, Slurpalicious, a local food delivery service.
If you’re a local, you might have noticed the cool white building with the robots mural on Duane Street with the food carts. Gary Hirsch, the artist has an interesting story. To encourage a kid with cancer, he painted a little brave robot on the back of a domino and gifted it to him. It worked. So, hospitals all over the world asked him for a few thousand robots. Then he realized he couldn’t paint so many, he had the idea to have other kids paint the robots to gift to kids in the hospital.
It ended up helping two kids at once- both how to give and how to care. So far, he’s painted more than 60,000 dominos. Candy asked him to come to bring Astoria joy in the form of the botjoy mural.

Amelia grew up in Astoria, the daughter of foresters. Through experiences working at Ft. Clatsop, going on a wilderness camp and her U of O education, she's taken on a passion for research in forest ecosystems leading to a Phd in Vermont.

Renee Fruiht- Teacher, Parenting Twins, Dressage Horse Riding
My guest today is Renee Fruiht. She has lived in the Astoria Oregon area for more years than I can remember.
She’s a retired teacher who began her career in a small school in Texas and ended it teaching 2nd grade at Astor Elementary in Astoria.
Renee took on the daunting task of parenting twins who have become two amazing human beings.
Since being retired, she has become passionate about Dressage horse riding and competitions
She’s also, along with Nate Sandel, created an educational endeavor for children of service workers to build a mini boat through the Maritime Museum.
