S02 E45 You Are What You Eat | A Music Junkies Podcast with Duke Charelle

A young 8-year-old started playing classical music. And at 18 he had his first album. Duke (Deondre) Charelle is our guest in this episode. He started on clarinet and then moved to guitar and his first song was PURPLE HAZE. Because Duke had played classical music since he was young he learned how to read the rhythm. When Duke got a guitar he would sit in the basement with his friend Brandon listening to vinyl and he studied many guitar artists. He started analyzing STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, LED ZEPPELIN, and then STEVE VAI, and then a long rabbit hole of guitarists. Duke likes a challenge. Something that pushes him. It expands your palette and the appreciation of sound. Sore fingers? Yes, until you build the callouses. A hawk flying in the sky was the inspiration for his song TANTRIC DANCE. Funk and hip song and Duke's music are a nice change. This came from when he first started playing the guitar. The first concert Duke attended where he wasn't performing was JOE SATRIANI. COSMIC VINE is off Duke's first album. He was retooling his songs and projects, and this came from a writing bug one day. At the time the earthquake in Japan had struck and it leaked radiation, and waste into the ocean, this was about the destruction of mother nature. Is Duke an advocate? He says this is where we reside and we don't want to destroy where we live. So it makes sense to take care of your surroundings. He says you don't have to be an activist to be active in the cause. At school, Duke took two years off for sports, where he was not allowed to do music at the same time. He was on a military base with his Dad. He did continue on his own playing guitar. Duke did NOT have a SECRET LOVER when he wrote this song. It was born while he was taking a shower. Listen and learn how? COMPULSIONS was written about a story of someone who was recovering and relapsed and trying to step in that person's shoes. LIQUID GALAXIES came from a conversation. Came from when Duke was creating his album. Out of 20 songs he chose five. This was one of them. It made #22 in 2021. You never know when inspiration will strike. The housing crisis hit and this was what was behind writing FORECLOSURE LANE. The bank owning our money is what it is all about. Isn't that the truth? It was a moment that shook Duke regarding their losing their home. The housing crisis shook the world. Duke likes to improvise in live shows. In a band, when he is not the "face" he can do a call-and-response with the vocals, and he says that's a good balance. Know how to be in front, be the songwriter and switch your roles. Words of wisdom? Always be willing to accept change. Change is a viable thing for growth, and it certainly has helped Duke's creative drive. Brings attention to things you may not have paid attention to before. If you develop a better relationship with change, it's an important aspect of life.
