These three authors have each painstakingly researched books on the history and impact of the railways Exmoor and surrounding areas. In this 30-minute chat, the trio cover a lot of ‘track’, from the transformative effect of freight on our everyday lives to the creation of the British package holiday, a blueprint for the NHS and even for insurance!

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S05 E02: Know your onions at The Bampton Charter Fair!
Today we're celebrating the Bampton Charter Fair. Recorded back in October 2022 and lovingly preserved until this time, here's our attempt to understand the local spectacle that really should be in your Autumn diary of events.
In this episode, Lucy finds something to tickle her tastebuds, David becomes overwhelmed with the selection of stalls and there's gin.. Lots of gin.
Make a date in your diary for the 2023 Charter Fair on Thursday 26th October. Come visit the Bampton Heritage and Visitor Centre and enjoy the atmosphere at this historic event. We understand Titan the robot will be visiting this year too!
Unfortunately, due to his Wedding, David (and Lucy) won't be able to make it this year, but we'll be visiting lovely Bampton over the winter to sample some of their local hospitality!
Here's some information from the Bampton.org.uk website:
Bampton Fair existed even before King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter in 1258 and it is always held on the last Thursday of October. It is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country.
For centuries, the fair mainly sold sheep and cattle and was the largest sheep fair in the South West of England. During the 1880's to the 1980's it evolved to become the famous Bampton Pony Fair trading in Exmoor ponies.
Today this traditional Devon fair continues to attract local producers of foods and livestock, crafts and traditional skills from Exmoor and its surrounding villages. The streets, church, pubs and venues of Bampton are filled to overflowing with market stalls, street entertainments and live music including craft workshops, demonstrations, and a funfair.

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S05 E01: Work Experience with Sam Curtis
Back in July, the fabulous Sam joined us for a work experience project from West Somerset Cottage.
Sam worked alongside Lucy and David to learn everything about the business, condensed into one short week!
Sam's challenge was to investigate things to do for teenagers (and 17 year-olds!) when staying at one of our cottages here in Minehead and Exmoor and bringing them to life in a blog, social media post and on this podcast.

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S04 E18: Our Precious Earth of Minehead
It’s either too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry. At the time of recording, Minehead feels more like Manila, with high humidity and frequent heavy rain interspersed with beaming sunshine.
If the climate really is changing for the long term, here in Minehead there’s someone very special who is taking our small town fight against the scourge of plastics and ongoing climate change,
Keith Hunt, proprietor of Independent Business, Our Precious Earth based on Holloway Street here in Minehead is very much the king of green. Man and Boy litter collector and eco warrior, Keith was inspired by an article in Look-In magazine in the 1970’s and since that time has never been too far away from a litter picker!
Keith’s shop is open six days a week and stocks household goods, great gifts, one-off recycled pieces from independent traders and some amazing articles that David and Lucy just loved and had to buy!

Back in May 2023, Lucy and David gathered together on a chilly day and discussed current trends in guest accommodation, inspired by a recent Alex Murrell article called ‘The Age of Average.’

On one of the only snowy days in 2023 (so far), Lucy and David got together down the line' to discuss online portal commissions, customer choice and pretty much any other words we could find beginning with the letter C!

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S04 E13: Plastic Free Exmoor with Peter Hoyland
In 2019, Peter Hoyland (Community Lead for Plastic Free Exmoor) and a core team of local influencers got hold of a copy of the Plastic Free Communities toolkit and set up a community led steering group. Together they set to work on the Surfers Against Sewage five-step framework to take their plastic free message to as many organisations, businesses and Exmoor visitors as they could.
The toolkit shows a community how they can work with local governance to bring about policy and system change, businesses to reduce the availability of throw away plastic and community groups and organsations to spread the word.
Fast forward to 2023 – through a pandemic – and there are now a growing number of businesses across Exmoor National Park who’ve been awarded a Plastic Free Business Champion Award, including Exmoor Character Cottages!

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S04 E03: Bampton Railway Exhibition
We were incredibly 'chuffed' to be invited to the opening day of the Bampton Railway Station exhibition at the Bampton Community Hall in Devon.
This lovely, hand-built exhibition runs daily until Sunday 18th at 3pm. Doors open at 10am until closing at 4pm.
Chris from the Liverpool Model Railway Society highlighted his passion for the hobby and we discovered how the build of this model started from seeing a photo during the first lockdown.
The exhibition charts the history of the railway in Bampton until its loss during Beeching's 'Reshaping' of Britain's Railways.
It's one of the many reasons to visit Bampton and discover more about the history of the greater Exmoor region.

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S03 E17: Leo Davey, Minehead Artist
In this Podcast recorded on a bright morning in May, Lucy and David took a trip to Leo's enchanting gallery in Minehead.
Inspired by his Exmoor and West Country surroundings, Leo's paintings change in style and feel as often as his subject. From the meticulous to the abstract, Leo refuses to settle on any particular genre of painting and continues to explore and develop ways of seeing and defining his landscapes through his works.
Leo has shown at the Royal West Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He has won The Evolver prize twice as well as numerous other prizes and been shortlisted in The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition many times and won the competition's Smith and Williamson Cityscape prize in 2015 and won first prize with his painting 'Condensation' in 2019.

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S03 E11: Road Wars - the A358
Last June, in response to a number of listener questions about 'best routes to get to Exmoor', Lucy and David recorded an impromptu podcast from Taunton Railway Station to Dunster.
Whilst looking back to this time uncovers some covid-related uncomfortable memories (such as the lack of the West Somerset Railway beyond Watchet) the purpose of this 'extra-cast' is to highlight what's on offer on your way to, or returning from, Exmoor.
For seasoned visitors, of course the A358 is only part of the picture. The twisty, turny A39 snakes between Bridgwater and Minehead (and beyond) and the southern route to Tiverton (the A396) ensures an exciting car journey from the Exe valley floor to the some of the highest points on the Moor!
As Oleta Adams once said, "we don't care how you get here, but get here if you can!"

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S03 E08: Your closer to home 'nearcation'
The Pandemic has created a whole new language, a sort or crisis-dialect which placed words in our vernacular seldom used in normal life.
A couple of terms which emerged in 2020 - 2021 were 'staycation', 'work-cation' and 'near-cation'. In January 2022, our friends at AirBNB even coined 'Bae-cation' which was designed to encourage friends to get together 'away' once again.
Upon further investigation, our very own website has also seen a nearcation boom! Since March 2020, visits from locations within two hours drive of Minehead have doubled and this trend has continued into Spring. It's also translating into bookings, with many guests coming from Bristol, Dorset and Wiltshire -around two hours away.
Of course, when travelling with children or dogs (a majority of our guests come with their four-legged friends), a shorter car journey is favourable.

A few weeks ago, we were fortunate to visit a very special person in a unique place.
For an hour or so, we talked Art, Poetry and Music with Mo Scott, in her garden studio overlooking the River Aller in Allerford, Bossington (near Porlock).
As you will hear, Mo is both talented and incredibly grounded with a patient, calming manner - even when her dog got tangled in the microphone cable!

In this our twelfth podcast, we were absolutely delighted to welcome Steve Crossman from Court Place Farm, Withycombe.
In this fascinating podcast, Lucy and David talk the history of Steve's family, his passion for local agriculture and the tasty delights that have been grown at Court Place Farm since the 1960's.

Dunster's High Street has always been a popular destination for visitors, but the pandemic shook their independent retailers to the foundations.
Now, the famous shopping streets in this medieval village are fighting back, with the Recovery Group bringing street furniture, a live stream webcam, new website and a plethora of marketing activities to help attract visitors this summer and beyond.
*One of the new retailers is Number 29 of Dunster High Street, a ladies clothes boutique owned and operated by Sue Ashton (formerly of Millstream Cottage B&B in West Street.)*

Cottages Uncut by Exmoor Character Cottages - S01 E07: Unlocking Exmoor
In this special Saturday Night (Fever) episode, Lucy and David talked excitedly about being able to *sit indoors *to enjoy a meal, a drink and to avoid the current inclement weather!
