Examination in Chief - Trial By Media
Play • 28 min

Bruce McArthur’s name made headlines across the world, but what about Moka Dawkins? In OUTtv’s Killer in the Village, The Cobra Killers and Surviving the Block, the news media played an important and different role in all three true crime documentaries. In episode three, Justice Harvey Brownstone conducts an Examination in Chief to find out how the news portrays different LGBTQ+ victims of crime, or if they are reported on at all.

Justice Brownstone is joined by the Toronto Star’s award-winning crime reporter, Wendy Gillis, Ryerson instructor, activist and journalist, Andrea Houston and Queer Crime associate producer, Jordan Steinhauer.

*Editor’s Note: The podcast mentions the documentary “Cobra Killer,” however the correct name of the film is The Cobra Killers.
