Operation Cactus: Part 1 - The call for help and initial preparation
In November 1988, Tamil Rebels from PLOTE of Sri Lanka, at the instigation of a Maldivian national, Abdulla Luthfee, attempted an armed coup to overthrow the legitimate government of that small island nation in the Indian Ocean. President Gayoom of the Maldives appealed to many regional and global powers, but it was India that responded swiftly and effectively.
In the course of the next few episodes, we will bring listeners the story of that operation, called "Operation Cactus" through interviews with four gentlemen who were central to its planning and execution.
