EP City Council forms a Women's Rights commission, appropriates the rest of our available ARPA funds, and gets other updates on this council recap
One of these days, I won't procrastinate this part, and will have a proper description up as soon as the episode is, but it is not this day.
We focus on the last council meetings which included ARPA fund appropriations and the creation of a Women's Rights commission - I give my recap and takes on all of it and more on this episode.

It's 4/20 and you know I had to do something for it right? Seeing as cannabis reform is on the ballot in Texas this November 'n all. What I don't talk enough about is how important safe and simple access to medicine it is for so many folks. Colt started the El Paso chapter of NORML after seeing how beneficial cannabis was to his loved ones in their fights against cancer. Since inception he has assisted in Texas and New Mexico in cannabis advocacy efforts - we dig into his story and so much more on this episode.

Dr. Aaron Waggoner on education, our kids, technology, and how it all blends together
Truly one for the books! Y'all know I have a deep respect for educators as I had dedicated much of my life to joining those ranks. Today's conversation was particularly great to have because we're talking about one of the most important groups in our society: our kids. From the disparate access to technology to the potential negative consequences of too much access to said technology, and some ideas on how we can be doing better. A fantastic conversation I was thrilled to have as well as info on the organization Dr. Waggoner works with, The El Paso Alliance for Just Schools - a non-partisan org dedicated to helping enrich and empower our local students and teachers. First recap of the season! Repeating instructions, an update from EPW, and the Omicron spike - PLUS Beto O'Rourke's El Paso rally speech
In true form this recap comes a bit closer to the next meeting than I'd like, but I'm still making the deadline, and I threw in a bit of field work for you to make up for it.
On this meeting we cover the Union Plaza/Duranguito securing, a rehash of the item brought up from a Nov meeting. With winter ahead of us, will whatever plan comes forward now be too little too late?

Surprise episode for a surprise veto and property tax reduction
I go on vacation for a few days and the Mayor decides to call an audible on our three-day-old adopted budget. According to the August 31st meeting agenda, council is set to discuss and vote on overturning the veto - this episode scratches at the sudden change of direction from Mayor Leeser and where he might find support in his efforts.

FY 2022 Budget adoption recap, and I've got a bone to pick, guess with who.
Well the budget has been adopted and there wasn't much to it. We did see a culmination of cannabis reform activists' diligent efforts to prevent EPPD from acquiring $72,000 in funding for THC testing by way of an amendment that merely sought to stipulate which cases would be tested. In the end, the amendment failed, coming down to a tie-broken vote by Mayor Leeser, but he isn't the member of leadership I'm placing the blame on, three guesses as to who.

El Paso has a new mask mandate and some City Reps show their true colors
El Paso's Health Authority, Dr. Ocaranza has issued a new mask mandate for El Paso and would have been left out to dry if it were solely up to reps Molinar (4), Salcido (5), and Rodriguez (6) - but that's not where true nature really showed up. That was during the work session where reps voted to instruct our delegation to support or oppose certain bills, including a resolution stating the border was an important and positive influence on our community, economy, and country - there are some reps who don't agree, listen to learn who.

I swear things are going to get steadier around here. I go into details as to why I'm so optimistic with a personal update, but before that I cover some fund movements made by the council earlier this week as well as what I understand could be the death knell for the council's favorite "tool" - non voter approved debt. And of course, it was only a matter of time, but the first three cases of Covid-19 Delta Variant have been found in El Paso (spoiler - they were all unvaccinated) I hope we avoid the worst of this.

Youth organizers put together a candlelight vigil on the one year anniversary of Congressman John Lewis' passing. A number of local and state leaders were in attendance and spoke on the Congressman, what he stood for, and the current peril our democracy currently faces.

Spectrum is bringing jobs and EPPD enlists VIPS on the recap of the June 21/22 City Council meetings
Leading up to last episode we were going through blistering heat, now leading up to this has been non stop rain. I promise not to wait for another phase of elemental fury before the next recap. Well the State legislature is up to all kinds of shenanigans and our Council/Mayor got the deets. Thanks to some sussin, we had a chance to have our legislature oppose a potentially gross overstep of State over Local governance, but Rep Salcido dropped the ball.
Our city council meeting was a bit dry, they even recessed for a few minutes before call to the public, still, I cover the couple of points of note before we get into my first group interview with county Democrats Wesley Lawrence and Miguel Calderon.
