If you have thought about being of service to A.A. by creating a new space for secular alcoholics to gather, or want to improve an online meeting, I invite you to attend this seminar. In this 90-minute interactive session, we will discuss ideas that are useful in creating a successful online meeting and benefit existing meetings that could use a little help. We will look at how the Covid pandemic changed the A.A. meeting experience and how we can maintain some of the useful traditions of face-to-face meetings in an online environment. Topic discussion will include items like:
What does “successful” even mean?
What makes a good meeting?
What does it mean to be an A.A. group?
What does it mean to be a Secular A.A. group?
Meeting format and structure.
Getting the word out.
Meeting presentation.
Service Staffing.
Security.
The Group Conscience.

Presented by biologist Bill W., author of “Twelve Secular Steps: An Addiction Recovery Guide” - Our pious AA founders were surprisingly insightful in characterizing addiction as a disease with two indispensable components: an allergic reaction to alcohol coupled to an unstoppable obsession to keep putting it into our bodies. But they would not recognize the modern-day disease model, which emphasizes a complex interplay of neurobiology, environment, and molecular genetics. Have these comprehensive (and complicated) modern-day insights have rendered “traditional” 12-Step recovery obsolete? Our answer should be a resounding no! This is especially evident if we distill 12 Step recovery down to its secular core, which consists of the essential actions and practices that have created 12 Step recovery since the humble beginnings.

Professor Anna Lembke is Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford and the New York Times bestselling author of Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence which decodes complex neuroscience into applicable strategies that explain and promote recovery. An expert in treating addictions of all kinds, in this talk Lembke discusses the biology and psychology of radical honesty: Telling the truth in all things large and small. She illuminates how radical honesty strengthens the prefrontal cortex, engenders a plenty-mindset, and ends the cycle of destructive shame that perpetuates addiction. Drawing on lessons from scientific research as well as the lived experience of people in recovery, students will learn how honesty as a daily commitment can help curb desire and encourage contentment and connectedness.

William Schaberg, author of Writing the Big Book: Stepping back from his typical focus on the 18-month period from October 1937 to April 1939, Schaberg expands his scope to consider what was going on in the Fellowship from December 1934 to 1939 – a time that Bill Wilson called "The Flying-Blind Period." In this presentation, Schaberg underlines just how "blind" that period actually was and how clueless all the main participants were about where they were going to finally end up in mid-1939. Once again, this is a "challenging the creation myths" presentation, encouraging people to set aside many of the 'hallowed' stories they have so often heard about early A.A. history and inviting them to take an "unfiltered" look at what the facts actually tell us about that time.

The words as written, the religious angle, and the time in which it was penned has challenged some alcoholics to weave the language into modern-day terms and modern-day realities. We are a peer support group of people in recovery from various addictions who are also neurodivergent. Some Neurodivergent conditions are: Autism, ADHD and OCD. Neurodivergence presents neurological differences as normal variations rather than pathological disorders.

Since Step 12 suggests that readers continue practicing what they learn in cleaning up the wreckage of the past, Bill then wrote more on this lifelong practice. In Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Step 12, he wrote, “Here we begin to practice all the Steps in our daily lives so that we and those around us may find emotional sobriety.” This session will present a Personalized Version of the Steps with questions we can ask ourselves to measure our progress. He also spoke of the Steps as a “spiritual program of action,” choosing the word “principle” to emphasize that they are “a course of action.” “To show others precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book.” - Forward to the First Edition.

Dr. Trombley will present the findings from her Ph.D. research examining substantial barriers nonreligious individuals in AA have faced. Most of the participants only attend secular AA meetings as a result of these barriers. She identifies 6 main barriers:
1) The belief that being nonreligious was a liability and that AA was religious;
2) The religious undertone and “God talk” in meetings;
3) Prayers in meetings;
4) The Big Book;
5) Discrimination;
and 6) Fundamentalism.
This presentation will walk through each of these barriers giving a brief description of what they mean and what she found. She will also briefly discuss how, despite these barriers, they were ultimately able to make AA work for them! She will briefly discuss how people were able to make AA successful for their recovery despite being nonreligious. The presentation will end with a more open discussion on the topic comments and questions from their own experiences or the experiences of others and where do we go from here.

For December we're pleased to be connecting with "Friends of Secular AA," who will host a panel discussion of people who practice a secular program in OA, NA, CODA, and Al Anon. It's sure to be an enlightening discussion held on the first Sunday of December (3-DEC) at noon AZ, 2pm ET, 11am PT, 7pm UK, and 6am AEDT (their Monday, 4-DEC).

AA is part of a larger recovery peer2peer community. Evidence shows that AA works for over 1/2 that give a go; what about the others: Refuge Recovery/Recovery Dharma, She Recovery, Women for Sobriety, Life Ring, SMART Recovery? Evidence shows that while none have better outcome rates than 12-step approaches, the same good results can be found in all mutual aid support communities.

Paris Atheists, Agnostics & Freethinkers meeting with John and Etienne ICSAA 2022
Started as an online meeting during COVID-19, Paris AAF meeting, while started to serve the secular minded AA community of Paris France, has also become a Zoom-tourist stop and frequently attended by early-rising North Americans.

Cooperation within AA, and beyond, makes room for members of other mutual-aid, peer-to-peer organizations which at ICSAA - a community of freethinkers - are not/is not, an outside issue.
How many people with addiction have a problematic relationship with one process or substance, and champion moderation in every other mood/mind/comfort-altering activity or consumable?
Yes, many of us have earned a seat in more than one mutual-aid room. In a freethinker's gathering about recovery from addiction, what exactly would be an outside issue?
So, it's the custom of ICSAA to create a panel of other peer-to-peer fellowships. We do it again at 2022 ICSAA: Here and Now.

Originally booked for Washington DC, health concerns prompted committee members to meet on Zoom this year. Previously, we have been to Santa Monica (2014), Austin (2016) and Toronto (2018). Our first attempt to meet in Washington was 2020 and as all members of peer to peer support groups for people with addiction know, COVID-19 has steered us to better use of technology such as Zoom meetings. *
*We offered simultaneous translation in Spanish/English and French/English this year, finding a way to reduce barrier and build bridges with current technology. Dr Silkworth's solution to alcoholism: FELLOWSHIP by Bill Schaberg ICSAA 2022
"The Doctor's Opinion" was penned in 1939 by Dr. William Silkworth who detoxed people with alcohol use disorder in 1930's New York City, including several sufferers who would become AA pioneers. What was Silkworth's opinion? What did he think - beyond medical intervention - would positively impact outcome rates for people the inebriates whom he helped?
"In terms of 'recovery' the main emphasis in A.A. is almost always placed on 'The Program,' and a belief in God as we understand Him. But there are many A.A. members with years and years of successful sobriety that would disagree with this.
This idea that the key to success does not rest with a SUPREME BEING, but in the FELLOWSHIP has an interesting history in early Alcoholics Anonymous."

* Direct study that focuses more on long-term recovery
* Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in alcohol use disorder care
* Efforts to close the Treatment Gap
* Lessons from increased alcohol-related death increases since the start of the pandemic.
Alcohol-related deaths increased in the spring of 2020 as the pandemic unfolded, and the number of deaths remained elevated. Binge drinking among young women is on the rise. FLASHBACK 2015 in Atlanta We Agnostics @ AA World Convention
Diggins kicked it off, Long Island's (big) Mike followed and Jeff Y, past delegate from Cleveland rounded off the panel of long-time AA talks. Like most of the 2015 80th anniversary of AA in Atlanta Georgia, We Agnostics was packed, over the 1,500 capacity with standing room only along the walls and all seats full.
The 2020 AA World Convention in Detroit was cancelled due to COVID (not an outside issue, lol). The ICSAA (International Conference of Secular Alcoholics Anonymous) was looking forward to Detroit; the committee had invited us to host a hospitality suit, as they do with International young people's, Doctors and Lawyers in AA, etc. Well, better luck (cross your fingers) for Vancouver 2025 when we will celebrate the 90th anniversary of AA.

History of Secular AA Literature panel from Austin TX
For atheists, freethinkers, humanists etc., who are looking for relatable written versions of recovery a la Alcoholics Anonymous, reviews have varied widely through AA history. Seven million copies of Living Sober are in circulation, AA's 1975 offering of the practical experiences of hundreds of thousands of accounts and AA anecdotes from AA's first forty years is appreciated by many. AA Grapevine has printed the experiences of unabashed atheists since the 1960s.

Beth H from Arizona, (pen-name Beth Aich) tells her story with inspired We Are Not All Egomaniacs: Adopting the Twelve Steps for Alcoholics with Low Self-Esteem.
Not everyone share's the Bill W narrative of Type-A self-centered person with a drinking problem who needs ego-deflation at depth to find and keep sobriety. Beth finds that when faced with distress some of us are fighters. But some flee, freeze or fawn. Spiritual Bypassing: John R's journey, ICSAA December 2021
Transpersonal-psychologist John Welwood, coined the term, “spiritual bypassing,” He defined spiritual bypassing as using “spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep personal, emotional ‘unfinished business,’ to shore up a shaky sense of self, or to belittle basic needs, feelings, and developmental tasks.”

Stonehenge AA Freethinkers Step meeting started on Zoom in the pandemic. In this recording, we are treated to how this AA group runs their regular meeting. We kick off with Jeffery Munn's Staying Sober Without God: The Practical 12 Steps. We were pleased to present this meeting with simultaneous Spanish/English translation.

Living Sober Ch 24 Emotional Entanglements with Geri B at ICSAA 2021
The International Conference of Secular Alcoholics Anonymous all day Zoom event's grand finale, held December 11th, 2021, was a reading from AA conference approved Living Sober with discussion to follow. Chairperson, Geri B of Las Vegas NV spoke about the value of the practical book of AA life: Living Sober. This 1975 record of the first 40 years of collective AA experience (updated as needed), is the centerpiece for Living Sober meetings for decades.
Throwing the choice of topic and chapter out to participants, we settled on Chapter 24 about relationships, sex and intimacy in AA sobriety with reading and sharing from around the world.

Not an Outside Issue: Secular OA, NA, CoDA
While Alcoholics Anonymous is not affiliated with Al-Anon or other peer to peer support—including 12-step fellowships—there has always been cooperation, since our early days.
Today, many of us fall prey to more than affliction, simultaneously or one addiction at a time. Friends we haven’t met yet await us in many mutual-aid groups. At the 2021 International Conference of Secular AA we are pleased to have members from other fellowships gather with us: Secular Overeaters, Secular Narcotics Anonymous and Agnostic, Humanist and Atheist Codependency Support Group.

Youth Enjoying Sobriety in Secular AA 2021-12-11
North American and European youth join in for the 2021 International Conference of Secular AA ( #ICSAA ) to talk recovery over Zoom. Join Teun, Zoe, Adam and Lina, who kick off the conversation; joining in are fellow atheists, agnostics and freethinkers in Alcoholics Anonymous.
AA is a peer-to-peer community where people get and/or stay sober. All AA groups are autonomous, secular AA appeals to people seeking a practical, irreligious AA experience. The International Conference of Secular AA started as an in-person gathering in Santa Monica in 2014. We were in Austin in 2016, Toronto in 2018 and when the 2020 Washington DC conference was postponed, we have moved to Zoom where this growing minority of secular AA reinforce our creed: we can find sobriety in AA without accepting anyone else's beliefs nor denying our own. Exploring Fact & Fiction about AA's 12 Steps with Bill Schaberg
William Schaberg wrote Writing the Big Book: The Creation of Alcoholics Anonymous (2019) after over eleven years of primary documentary research. William reflects on the three things the research revealed that drastically altered his core beliefs about early AA:
1. Bill Wilson was a fabulous storyteller and not a reliable source for accurate historical details.
2. No Hank Parkhurst—no book! Almost written out of AA history, Hank P had as much to do with the publication of Alcoholics Anonymous as anyone, including Bill Wilson. The influence on this little-known man reverberates in our 12-Step culture, today.
3. Akron AA had no interest and no creative input into the first 164 pages of the Big Book. Despite the story of the book being an ensemble effort of one-hundred AA members, it’s (the first 164 pages) is largely Bill W’s story.

ICSAA Seattle International secular AA speaker meeting November 7 2021
November's first-Sunday-of-every-month world tour of secular AA speakers travels North by North-West: Our Seattle AA coffee club features Lori, Bruce, Eric and Marilyn. Following the speakers on this Zoom meeting November 7th, 2021, members from around the world chime in.
Part of AA as a whole, the International Conference of Secular AA is special-purpose AA body - like International Conferences for Young People, Doctors, Lawyers, LGBTQ+, women and others. EURO ICSAA Zoom & AA: the closing meeting with Mark + Joe
June 19th, 2021 was the first European hosted International Conference of Secular Alcoholics Anonymous (ICSAA) and it was two Zoom rooms, 11 AM - 11 PM. Attendees were largely delighted with the days events.
The grande finale was an around-the-world AA discussion of the brief history of Zoom & AA, with opening comments by Mark from Tus Nua Freethinkers and Joe from Beyond Belief Agnostics & Freethinkers meeting in Toronto. A lively and heart-felt discussion follows from AAs talking about the age of Zoom around the world, capping off 12-hours of agnostic and atheist AA meetings.
This was the first time ICSAA was hosted outside USA/Canada and based on the enthusiasm, it will not be the last. Next year?

ICSAA Gasgow Happy Heathens secular speaker meeting 2021 10 03
Our October 2021 world tour stop for our secular Alcoholics Anonymous speakers meeting is Glasgow, home to Happy Heathens. At the time of recording Glasgow offers both in-person and online (Zoom) AA for atheists, freethinkers, agnostics. Every month the International Conference of Secular AA world tour brings you a local feel from different agnostic/atheist/humanist AA communities around the AA world. September 2021, hosted by Jenny, we feature the New Englanders:
* Dan found sobriety 50 years ago at the age of 27. His first International AA convention was Colorado in 1975. Several members of Dan's family found sobriety in AA since then.
* Mickey, today, is "sober, at peace, abstinent and well." In 1982 Dan found Massachusetts AA, married, had kids, divorced and remarried the mother of his kids. Dan Zooms in at the end of his Cape Cod spiritual recovery retreat.
* Mary Susan (Nana to some) was a real hippie in the '60s-'70s. She found AA, kept her beliefs and views to herself and "was as sick as her secrets." At her 30 year sobriety celebration she came-out as someone who does not believe in a higher power; no god-no problem.

EURO ICSAA 2021 Postcard to My Future by Zanner
June 19, 2021 was the first All Europe International Conference of Secular AA. Held on Zoom in two rooms running 12 hours each, it was a day of many firsts, for Alcoholics Anonymous, for agnostics and atheists in AA and the greater recovery community.

She would see people come to one meeting and never return. So, she started an AA for Atheists and Agnostics group.

There are AA meetings for LGBTQIA+ members in Ireland. There are secular AA meetings for people in Ireland. At the European-wide International Conference of Secular Alcoholics Anonymous we host the first Irish LGBTQIA+ Secular AA meeting. In accordance with meeting and committee wishes, this recording is an abridged version of our meeting. EURO ICSAA Freethinkers Tus Nua Ireland hosted by Jimmy
Born of the COVID-19 pandemic lock-down, a lone online secular AA meeting was started in Ireland to meet a need. It did satisfy an unmet need. Today (at the time of our June 19, 2021 European International Conference of Secular AA), there are now 11 meetings weekly with the odd 24 hour... well, 25 hour (that will be explained in the meeting) around the clock back-to-back meetings.

The whole world came to listen and participate (as you will hear in the podcast).
This is a meeting to be remembered. Even people at the meeting couldn’t wait to listen in. Our hour and a half is rich with grace, gratitude, drama and AA know-how.

EURO ICSAA 2021 Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) meeting
As AA staggered into the digital age, thanks in part to COVID-19, many firsts are coming to Alcoholics Anonymous. This recording, on Juneteenth, no - not an outside issue - was the first International AA Black, Indigenous, People of Colour panel focusing on secular AA.
This was the first ever International Conference of Secular AA hosted in Europe. The whole world was invited but on note, this was the first time ICSAA was hosted outside of USA/Canada. It was a great conference: moving, invigorating, trail-blazing and hopeful. AA is growing and widening our gateway - all for the better, we think. Welcome to the International monthly secular AA speaker world tour, brought to you by ICSAA: International Conference of Secular
AA. May 2, 2021, was the date of our Zoom meeting and our "London Calling," episode is represented today by the Rainham Agnostics, Atheists and Freethinkers AA group form an east suburb of London England.
We get a brief history of secular AA through the last four decades in the United Kingdom. We hear from Lisa, who came to AA about two years ago and Miles, in recovery for decades, who found sobriety while living in Reykjavik, Iceland, going to treatment and not knowing the language.

ICSAA January 3 2021 secular AA speaker meeting: Kim from Oregon & Declan from Ireland
This was the first world tour of First Sunday of Every Month secular AA speaker meeting, on Zoom January 3, 2021 with Kim from Eugene OR and Declan from Dublin IE. Included is a little informal pre and post-meeting chit-chat. The plan is to visit a new city/town every month and bring a local flavor of atheist/agnostic AA to the world. February we’ll be in Orlando with the OMAGOD group, March will be Cape Town South Africa, hosted by the Secular Serenity AA group, April will be from Montreal, London in May and Cottonwood AZ in June—all of the first Sunday of the month.

On the first Sunday of every month, the International Conference of Secular AA hosts a secular speaker meeting. March 7, 2021 it's from the Secular Serenity Group of Cape Town South Africa. This was a wonderful meeting moderated by Rose, giving a history of secular AA in South African and heartfelt sharing from Gershwin, Graham and Russel.

ICSAA from Orlando with OMAGOD hosting February 7 2021 secular speaker meeting
The first Sunday of every month the International Conference of Secular AA hits the road to bring the taste, experience, strength & hope of a new host group/city. February 7th, ICSAA Zoom experience is poolside in Orlando for a pretend virtual Winter Vacation. Members dressed in pool and patio garb or their favorite Disney character. Unintended consequences for secular AA is that atheists & agnostic groups and our meetings are zooming. How many more people are finding an attachment to AA while maintaining the authenticity of our secular worldview? ICSAA 2020 Virtual Not an Outside Issue: Are Gender Bias and Sexism Holding AA Back?
The first International gathering of agnostics, atheists and freethinkers in AA was in Santa Monica in 2014. In 2016 it was Austin and Toronto hosted 2018. Washington was going to host the in-person ICSAA2020 but that has been postponed to 2021 (fingers crossed at time of recording). So - we went virtual for our December 5, 2020 ICSAA gathering.
