Phew! That felt good. James and Jon get the frustrations of poor final assessment attending APC Candidates off their collective Assessor chests. Some 40+ assessments between them this session (1, 2022) and the experience was not all good.
The boys are seasoned APC Assessor/Chairs with some 35+ years of assessing experience between them and probably in excess of 3,000 assessments delivered. Plus, Jon has trained over 8,000 assessors to date. They are also passionate and committed about how they deliver the APC assessment process and WANT candidates to pass.
This podcast is a serious but well-mannered rant about the massive ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT that candidates and their counsellors need to hear and smarten up their delivery so the assessment can be less of a car crash and more of a sailing home with flying colours.

Sophie, a professional Chartered Building Surveyor, PPE shoe entrepreneur, a champion for women in surveying and new mum was a joy to have a chat with. James and Jon in their inevitable fashion chatted through career path, life history and what made Sophie want to become a surveyor. Sophie is a surveyor through and through and from itchy feet as a youngster building dens in the garden to now a key professional person on large scale projects, where secretly the awe-ness (made up word) about buildings, as a child really, hasn’t really disappeared.

James and Jon have enjoyed discussing Sam Nicholson’s career and jam-packed life to date, they thought they would lull him into a false sense of security and turn the tables by allowing Sam to pick up the reigns and ask them some questions instead!
Running around buildings hitting each other with loaded sticks, music, the movies, family life and business, work ethic and a keen sense of you can achieve anything with a bit of hard work, is all part of the discussion... Following the success of ‘Lifeboat Man’ (S1E5) we have invited our VIP Guest, Sam Nicholson, back to the SurveYOUR podcast to massage his ego, discuss his eclectic career path and bring us bang up to date as he embarks upon his new career in Building Surveying.
We covered Sam’s early experience of surveying which then took a back seat as he embarked upon a ten-year hiatus, surfing, saving lives and skiing in the French alps and a more down to earth local role training off-shore workers for five years. Finally, coming full circle back to Building Surveying, the APC and his future career aspirations.
It is always fun chatting with Sam and don’t tell him, but James and Jon are secretly envious of the colourful experience he has had to date. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.

What a joy it was to catch up with our international man of mystery, *Mr Michael Henning FRICS*. Amongst other things, we discussed his 45th year in surveying, how he became a quantity surveyor, homemade soup blenders, what would he tell his 20-year-old self now and whether he would rather be a surveyor or the captain of a cruise liner!
James and I have known Michael for years through the RICS Matrics and he runs a well-established practice in the North East of England.
It was great to catch up with Kidson too, Michael’s travel companion, and hear about some of the shenanigans he has been up to and finally the absolute pleasure it was for James and me to serve on Governing council with Michael.
