Daniel Nestor Interview: His Career, Serve & Volley Mistakes, Net Mentality, & Court Recognition
Daniel Nestor is one of the best doubles players ever. He has eight men's doubles grand slams, four mixed doubles major titles, an Olympic Gold Medal, and won the Tour Finals four times.
Daniel recently built an online course for club players that we discuss in this episode, along with his incredibly successful career. Daniel shares what made his most successful doubles teammates so good, including a decade-long partnership with Mark Knowles. I also ask him what made the Bryan Brothers so tough, who he had a 29-30 record against... not bad 😉

Dealing with Nerves & 10-Point Tiebreakers from 2023 US Open Champion, Erin Routliffe
WTA doubles player Erin Routliffe joins the show for the second time, but the 1st time as a major champion. Erin won the 2023 US Open Women's Doubles Title alongside new partner, Gaby Dabrowski.
You'll hear how Erin approached the new partnership with Gaby since they had only played for three tournaments before the US Open. She also shares how she dealt with an electric US Open crowd that was mostly against her during their quarterfinal match. Erin shares advice on dealing with nerves and performing well in 10-point tiebreakers as well.

This is a conversation with the coach of ATP doubles star, Joe Salisbury, Dave O'Hare. I chatted with Dave in New York as his team go for a 3-peat of the US Open.

How to Use Direction to Win in Doubles
This is the 8th and final episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.
On every shot in doubles, you can choose which direction you want to hit the ball. But how do you know you're choosing the right direction?
Many club-level doubles players go down the line when they should go crosscourt, never change their serve location, or don't think about the best target for approach shots.
In this episode, I'll cover how to use direction to improve your doubles strategy for serving, returning, rallying, and net play. I'll share common mistakes I see, drills you can practice, and the ideal direction to hit the ball in different situations.

The Gigi Method with Gigi Fernandez (Rebroadcast)

In this episode, Will talks with Gigi Fernandez, one of the greatest doubles players of all time.
Gigi won 17 major doubles titles on the professional tour and two Olympic Gold Medals. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010. Today, she specializes in teaching club and recreational adult doubles players.
This is a really rare opportunity where you get someone from the pro-level teaching at a recreational level or club level. In this conversation, you’ll learn about Gigi’s pro career and tons of doubles strategy. Gigi discusses the Gigi method, which has five different parts to it (below). She covers serve and return strategy, net play, how to defend against the lob, and the biggest mistakes she sees from club-level doubles players.

Choosing Return Sides in Doubles (Deuce or Ad)
In doubles, choosing the correct return side is one of the most important decisions you'll make with your partner before each match. It's also one of the most misunderstood topics by club-level doubles players.
In this episode, I'll cover how to think about choosing return sides and share a recent example where I moved my partner to the ad side even though they preferred their forehand.
There are two BIG myths that you might be using when it comes to choosing return sides that I'll dispel as well.

Doubles Team Chemistry with Jorge Capestany (Rebroadcast)
*This is a rebroadcast of my interview with Jorge Capestany from September 2021.
*How well do you know your doubles partner?
In this episode, I speak with Jorge Capestany in great depth about this question. Jorge is one of the top tennis coaches in the US and one of only ten people in the world who are Master Professionals for the USPTA and PTR. He’s coached tennis for decades and thinks that understanding your partner might be the most important factor in winning matches for adult tennis players.
We cover 20 questions that you should know about your doubles partner, what your “traffic patterns” should be in between points, and a lot of doubles strategy. Jorge is also well-known for his tennis drills, so we discuss his favorite doubles drills and games as well.
This episode is a little different because I’ve never talked about team chemistry this much before, but it was eye-opening for me and will be for you too.

2 Doubles Tactics from My New Course (plus a bonus)
Today, I'm launching my new doubles course, *25 Winning Doubles Tactics*. So in this episode, I wanted to share 3 tactics that I use in my own doubles matches and teach to club players like you.
The first two tactics are from the course where you can see real examples of each tactic being executed. They are called the Shoe Shine and the Sneaky Lob.
The last one is from a recent 9.0 mixed doubles match where my partner and I made what turned out to be a fantastic adjustment to come back after dropping the first set 7-6(4).

Demi Schuurs Interview: Her Tennis Story & Doubles Success
This is an interview with WTA doubles player, Demi Schuurs. Demi has a career-high ranking of #7 in the world, including 17 doubles titles on tour.
Demi is also a top returner and net player, making her one of my favorite players to watch. She has a very old-school doubles game, constantly moving forward and taking away time from her opponents.
In this conversation, we discuss her story – she grew up in the Netherlands, how to play with different doubles partners, including her current one, Desirae Krawczyk, and strategy.

Rob Morgan Interview: Winning Wimbledon, Better Doubles Communication, Volley Drills, & More
This is an interview with ATP tennis coach, Rob Morgan. Rob has coached tennis for over two decades and currently coaches world #1 doubles player Wesley Koolhof, who just won Wimbledon alongside Neal Skupski.
I ask Rob about his role on their team and what it took to win Wimbledon. Wesley and Neal have been the best team in the world for over a year but hadn't won a Grand Slam until last week. You'll find out what they improved this year to get over the hump and win their first major title.
We also discuss:
* The one thing Rob has all his players do when he first starts coaching them (something he says he's never shared)
* How to beat a team that lobs or pushes for club-level players
* The most neglected shot for club doubles players

Rob seems to prioritize communication in doubles, and I didn't realize how deep communication could go on and off the court until this conversation. Philip Farmer Interview: Coaching World #1's, Bryan Bros vs Today's Doubles, & The Lob Return
This is an interview with Philip Farmer who has coached on the ATP & WTA tours for over two decades.
Phil has one of the smartest doubles minds in the world and has coached four different players to a world #1 doubles ranking including the Bryan Brothers, Corina Morariu, and most recently, Austin Krajicek, who I interviewed last week. Austin Krajicek Interview: ’23 Roland Garros, Tactics that Moved Him to #1, & Lefty Doubles
This is an interview with world #1 doubles player and 2023 Roland Garros champion, Austin Krajicek.
Austin recently rose to the top of the doubles rankings with his first major title, and he joined me from London where he was beginning his grass court season (he won the Queen's Club Championships a few days after our conversation). Austin and his partner, Ivan Dodig, lost in the Roland Garros final in 2022, so I ask Austin to compare that run to his recent title in Paris.
We also discuss:
* What Austin has improved over the past 2-3 years that helped him move from a ranking of 40 at the end of 2021 to #1 today.
* How he spends his off days at tournaments, as well as his off time outside of tennis.

Personally, I think power is overrated in doubles. I'd rather you hit with depth, or adjust your position than hit the ball hard. However, this is an important episode because most people do use power at the wrong times.

How can you use movement to win in doubles?
There are two ways you can move on the tennis court. Forward & backward, and side to side (laterally). Both are important, but many players move the wrong way or don't move at all when they should.
This episode will help you use your movement to force more errors, get into your opponent's head, and help your partner hold serve more easily. You'll also learn one of my favorite movements out of the I-formation when my partner is serving.

All American Cup Preview with Nick Monroe
This is an interview with Nick Monroe, a recently retired ATP doubles player, and three-time podcast guest, to discuss the new All American Cup.
*What is the All American Cup?* It’s a team tennis tournament featuring the best American male players, led by captains Bob & Mike Bryan.

Strengths vs Weaknesses in Tennis: They're Not as Simple as You Think
If you talk to most people about their strengths and weaknesses in tennis, they'll say something like "I hate my backhand." But when you study the match court and the data, you find that strengths and weaknesses aren't so simple.
In this episode, we'll analyze why the way you think about strengths and weaknesses needs to change. I'll also discuss a simple framework for finding an opponents' strengths and weaknesses. Tennis Analytics collected over 1400 points of doubles data to help us review what the strength and weakness are for the average 3.5/4.0 USTA player.

Jack Broudy Interview: Founder of the Non-Linear Tennis System
In this episode, I interview Jack Broudy from Broudy Tennis. Jack is a tennis player, coach, author, speaker, and inventor. He's coached college national champions, top US juniors, and touring pro players including Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson, and Coco Vandeweghe when they were rising juniors.
Jack has a unique (but incredibly effective) teaching methodology called the Non-Linear Tennis System. He teaches every stroke from this foundational principle so players can learn the serve, groundstrokes, and volleys faster and hit the ball effortlessly. Rather than the typical mechanical teaching style most coaches use, Jack believes the body should be fluid and move together for each shot.
We discuss how he got started in tennis, common doubles strategy mistakes he sees from club players, and technique. Jack shows us how to hit volleys with better depth and pace, as well as problems with the way many 3.0-3.5 level players hit groundstrokes and how to correct it.

Strategy to Beat 40+ vs 18-39 Players
Older 40+ players are crafty, have more control, and never miss. Young 18-39 players are fast and hit the ball hard!
This, of course, is an overgeneralization, but it’s helpful to think about how to beat each of these types of doubles teams.
In this episode, I tell a story from college of a teammate who thought smacking overheads from the baseline was a good strategy for him. Our coach taught him that it wasn’t through a clever drill. We’ll use the lesson he learned to figure out how to beat a crafty, consistent, 40+ or 55+ team. Then I’ll talk about strategy for beating younger doubles teams in the 18-39-year-old range who hit with more power.

When to Play 2-Back in Doubles (& How)
In doubles, getting to the net is a winning strategy. But sometimes it pays to play two-back in doubles.
* Why would we want to play two-back?

Rajeev Ram Interview: 2020 Australian Open Men's Doubles Champion
In this episode, I talk with ATP doubles player Rajeev Ram. He is number 15 in the world in doubles right now, and last year reached a career-high of number 5.
When I catch up with him he is in his hotel room in Australia on a 14-day quarantine. He is one of the players who is not allowed to leave his hotel room at all for fourteen days.
We talk about how he manages to train while he is stuck in his hotel room 24/7, and then dive into his career and doubles strategy.

Talking Strategy with World #11 Nicole Melichar
I interviewed Nicole Melichar last summer, so this is her second appearance on the show.
In this episode, I catch Nicole from Melbourne, a few weeks before the Australian Open. She is in quarantine and is only allowed to leave her room for five hours per day.
Last summer when I spoke to her she was number 19 in the world, now she is all the way up to number 11. We talk about how quarantine is going in Melbourne and what her plans are for 2021 - she is playing with a new partner this year.
We also talk about her fall season where she did really well. She made the final of the US Open and Cincinnati Open, won in Strasbourg, and made the semis of the French Open.

Gigi Fernandez Interview
