Long Story Short, Sensitivity is a Superpower
This week Skye and Amanda read Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World and talk about authors, Granneman and Solo’s goal to destigmatize the way that society tends to see and respond to highly sensitive people.
The two discuss the true definition of sensitive, share a check list of examples of what being sensitive may look like, discuss the 3 types of sensitive and the 5 gifts that come with being a sensitive person. They also talk about the concept of overstimulation and how it often shows up in highly sensitive people. It all leads to a conversation about the difference between empathy and compassion and why it’s so important for sensitive people to learn the difference.

This week Skye & Amanda read a Psychology Today article by Juliana Breines, “Self-Compassion vs. Letting Yourself Off the Hook”. The two define self compassion and discuss where they were with it prior to reading. They open up about what areas they see that they can make improvements with how much grace they give themselves.

She listens as Skye reads a true crime article from Vanity Fair. “The Body in Room 348” tells the story of Greg Fleniken, a middle-aged popular gas and oil man who is found dead in his room at the Eleganté Hotel in Houston Texas. Detectives have no explanation for Fleniken’s bizarre death or who would want to harm him.

This week the ladies are talking sex! Skye & Amanda discuss their recent read, Stolen Women: Reclaiming Our Sexuality, Taking Back Our Lives by Dr. Gail Elizabeth Wyatt and give their thoughts around what ended up being an insightful history lesson on the myths and stereotypes that surround the sexuality of Black women, dating back to pre-slavery.
The two open up about their early years - when and how they learned about sex, whether or not sex was discussed in their households or at school and how much of their first sexual experiences lived up to any expectations they might’ve had based on media and peers. Long Story Short, Blackness is Elite
After reviewing The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, Skye and Amanda sit down to dig deeper into the themes within the critically acclaimed novel. The two discuss their views on colorism and light skin privilege and the impacts of unhealed family trauma and kept secrets. They open up about their own experiences with racial identity by recounting the stories that they were told growing up and explaining how they further educate themselves and continue to celebrate their Blackness.

Long Story Short, Self Care Isn’t Always Easy
While surviving a pandemic and at the height of the current revolution against racial injustice, Skye & Amanda sat down to discuss the importance of self care as a form of resistance, what self care really means to them and how it is incorporated into their everyday lives. From sleep and walks, to setting clear boundaries with others and their experiences with therapy, the two share some of their favorite necessary forms of self care, ones they are continuing to work on and tips of how to intentionally pour into yourselves.
