They Never Saw Black Men As Fathers (ft. Dr. Mark Anthony Neal)
This episode features a conversation with my distinguished guest, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, PhD.
Dr. Mark Anthony Neal is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African & African American Studies and Chair of the Department of African & African American Studies at Duke University where he offers courses on Black Masculinity, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities, including signature courses on Michael Jackson & the Black Performance Tradition, and The History of Hip-Hop, which he co-teaches with Grammy Award Winning producer 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit).
He is the author of several books including What the Music Said: Black Popular Music and Black Public Culture (1999), Soul Babies: Black Popular Culture and the Post-Soul Aesthetic(2002) and Looking for Leroy: Illegible Black Masculinities (2013). The 10th Anniversary edition of Neal’s New Black Man was published in February of 2015 by Routledge. Dr. Neal is co-editor of That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader (Routledge), now in its second edition. Additionally Dr. Neal host of the video webcast *Left of Black*, which is produced in collaboration with the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke.

Exploring Issues In Modern Day Fatherhood (ft. Dr. Dan Singley)
This episode features a conversation with my guest, Dr. Daniel Singley.
Dr. Singley is a San Diego-based board certified psychologist and Director of The Center for Men’s Excellence. His research and practice focus on men’s mental health with a particular emphasis on reproductive psychology and the transition to fatherhood.
Dr. Singley won the *American Psychological Association’s 2017 Practitioner of the Year Award* from the Division on Men & Masculinities. He is Past President of the APA’s *Section on Positive Psychology* and currently serves on the Board of the APA’s Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities as well as Postpartum Support International.
He conducts training and presentations around the country to assist individuals and organizations to enhance their level of father inclusiveness, and founded the grant-funded Basic Training for New Dads, Inc. nonprofit and Padre Cadre social networking application just for dads in order to give new fathers the tools they need to be highly engaged with their infants as well as their partners.
In his free time, Dr. Singley likes to cook, surf, read, and drive his two sons to activities all over town so they can’t escape his annoying shrinky questions.

Middlebury Reunion Weekend '22 Fatherhood Chat
This episode features a conversation I recently had with some friends on the college campus where we all met nearly two decades ago. Three out of of the four voices featured in this episode met on the campus of Middlebury College (Derek, Bill, Kelly). The fourth voice (Eric) is the partner of our friend and Midd alumni, Lili; and though Eric is not a father, he graciously accepted my invitation to join in this conversation about fatherhood in spite of his initial skepticism.
This conversation is special because it marks the first time Derek, Bill, and I spent time together not just as friends but also as Dads. And capturing this moment was a truly special accomplishment. Our conversation was broadly about fatherhood. It is full of empathy, encouragement, gushing over our children, perspective shifts, healing, and lots of laughter and good time as men.

If you've been following along, I am beginning to take a historical look at fatherhood by examining the "portrait" of fathers throughout four historical periods. In this episode, I make my first stop in colonial America to answer this question:
*If I were to wake up one morning* and find that, while I was asleep, my son, my wife and I were somehow transported back in time to Colonial America… in terms of the expectations of that society for the male parent figure, how would I be expected to carry out being a father to my son?
