*Born in 1968, Marcus McAllister is an American artist. He lives and works in Paris.*
*Marcus McAllister spent part of his childhood in Germany and in several other countries, with his family, since his father was a military. On his return to the United States, he studied visual arts at the University of Louisiana. He then moved to New York, where he participated in several group exhibitions.*
*Later on Marcus McAllister moved to Paris, where he joined the artistic community of Belleville. Always accompanied by his notebook, whenever Marcus McAllister goes for a walk in the capital he succumbs for everything that inspires him. He paints his canvases based on his drawings, he makes sketches at first before adding acrylic paint.*

EP 350: Parisian Egyptologist and Author Dr. Angela Stienne
I am a creative and practice-based museum researcher exploring the intersection of museums, bodies and ethics. My background is as a historian of Egyptology and for a decade I explored academic and public engagement around the display of ancient Egyptian mummified bodies. What did that look like? Well I wrote a lot of dissertations on it! A bachelor's degree, then a master's and a PhD on Egyptian mummies in museums, which I did in the UK. I then did a postdoc on the topic, and did a whole lot of public talks and conferences, I once even gave a talk in a pub! I am really passionate about finding ways to engage the public with big ethical questions such as the collecting, retention, study and display of human remains in museums. I wrote a book about this, it came out last year and it's called Mummified, The stories behind Egyptian mummies in museums. I also work on creative health, storytelling and art-based projects in museums around questions of narratives and representations: I curated two exhibitions with refugees and asylum seekers in Leicester (UK) where I lived, and I run two digital projects: Mummy Stories (http://www.mummystories.com ) is a participative project on human remains in museums; The Lyme Museum (http://www.thelymemuseum.org ) is the first virtual museum with touring exhibitions exploring the lived experience of invisible illnesses and disabilities through visual storytelling and materiality.
In short, I spend a lot of time in front of my phone and laptop building communities, and then I run creative workshops, curate exhibitions, and consult for museums, all to make sure that museums and heritage sites have more expansive narratives, and give a voice to more people. I'm starting my second book, but this one will take longer, because I am juggling so many projects, but also because it's a lot more personal.

Marmalade Bleue is the innovative studio of Danielle Duncan (she/her), a multi-hyphenate American artist based in Paris making the future palatable.
Danielle founded Food Typography, a sub-genre of design, in 2013 when she discovered food and objects speak their own languages within our everyday lives. She combined everyday items with thoughtful lettering to create photographic commentary on society, consumerism and the human existence. This work was soulful, ephemeral, and shockingly a huge hit with global brands such as Target, Disney, Cadillac, Wix, Tesco, Pepsi, and Kansas City Chiefs.
When augmented reality emerged, Danielle saw the potential to bridge the physical and digital worlds. The shelf life of her work is preserved and enhanced through a technology, available to anyone with a device. The familiar textures and shadows blend into the existing environment, making the future more human. Her work currently spans advertising, activism, fine arts and events.

I grew up in French Alps and moved to Japan at 17yo with my family.
After a childhood focused on outdoor activities and nature, living in
Tokyo opened my mind and my curiosity.
After 2 years, I came back to France and continued studying Japanese
with a bachelor's degree, combined with a master's degree in
International trade. During those years, I had the chance to get many
jobs as a guide, a translator, a teacher or simply helping Japanese. As
many of my clients kept asking me about French food and recipes, I
organized cooking lessons taught by my mother who is a fantastic home

Tonje is a storyteller. She has always explored ways to present multiple sides of objects or people, and photography naturally became her vocation.

She was born and educated in Norway and moved to Berlin to study art and fashion at the Lette Verein. After completing her diploma Tonje moved to Paris, where she worked as an illustrator for the couture houses and young avant garde designers of the time. Food has been a focus in my life since I was very young, and I mean good, fresh homegrown and homemade food. She shot her first roll of film when she was hardly thirteen years old on her dad’s Nikon F2a, and knew from then she wanted to be a photographer. Augusta studied at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara California. Augusta’s professional photography career developed during her years living in New Orleans shooting for brands, magazines, and private clients. Hi I'm Kaitlyn, I am an artist living in Paris. I moved here three & a half years ago with my partner & have been studying art & French in Montmartre, where I currently reside. I have a background in Arts & Human Services from Cornish College of the Arts in my hometown of Seattle, Washington & have continued to study different mediums since arriving in France. Before our move, I was a Social Worker focusing on poverty alleviation in the Greater Seattle Area, and lead art therapy classes in my free time with a local non-profit, supporting women & children exploited by sex trafficking. Jason Stoneking is a poet, diarist, and performing artist from the United States, who now lives in Paris. He has published several collections of poetry and nonfiction, and has also written for songs and film. Recently, his art practice has concentrated on the creation of unique handwritten texts. For his Bespoke Books series, he writes an entire unique book by hand, in a single draft, either for an individual reader, or in documentation of a residency. In his video series Found Stages, he improvises spontaneous poems in spaces that feel suitable, if not intended, for performance. For his newest series, Portrait Sittings, he invites subjects to pose for him as they would for a painter, while he composes their portrait in handwritten words.

Leslie McAllister is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Pennsylvania in the United States, but now based in Paris. Her works explore a diverse array of process and media. Among her recent endeavors are a street art project, Lost Art, for which she harvests discarded objects from the street, paints on them, and returns them to where they were found along with her contact information; and a series of abstract plein air paintings which sculpturally incorporate natural materials found onsite. Susan Boyle is a playwright and drinks researcher and consultant. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the Technological University, Dublin. Her research in Beverage Studies concerns performance, storytelling and the sensory in immersive drinks experiences with particular reference to beer, wine and Irish spirits such as whiskey. *My initial concept was to create a totem pole configuration with a vertical buildup of elements (all of which symbolize the town or the region). Then I got the creative inspiration to make some of the elements movable like a wind vane.; thus the 'Totem Girouette' came about. We've named it 'Autant en Emporte le Chanvre' in nostalgic reminiscence of the hemp industry, which was the source of wealth in Bréhémont up until the advent of nylon ropes, which killed the hemp industry. To give the sculpture a bit more gravitas, however, within the basic shapes, I introduced a mathematical abstraction from ancient Greece. The Greek mathematician Euclid came up with what is called 'Euclid's 1st Proposition. By overlapping two circles, the resulting space in a lozenge in which two equilateral triangles can be placed, one pointing upwards (a symbol for fire) and one pointing downward (a symbol for water). Joe Langley's story is the most remarkable of all the expatriates that I know - AfricanAmerican or otherwise! His love affair with the French language began when he
found his brother's copy of Saint Exupéry's Le Petit Prince at home. He liked the
"look" of the French words and loved the illustrations. These inspired him to pursue
art and the French language as life-long passions. He went on to spend a year in the
Dordogne region as an exchange student at the age of fifteen, and a year in
Montpellier in the junior-year-abroad program at Davidson College. The French
Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited Joe to teach English to high school students in
Montpellier upon his graduation from Davidson. He spent a year in this post, which

EP 202: Parisian Actress and Performer Mia Leahy
Mia Leahy hails from Ireland where she was passionate from an early age about dance; ballet, Irish dancing and American tap, singing, and music, reciting poetry, and making up plays. This led to an exodus to London after a year at Cork University studying the Greeks and dancing a lot.
Formed a highly unsuccessful punk band called the Nude Usherettes and thought the better of it and applied to drama school. She had encouragement and support from great actors like Kate Beswick, Derek Fowlds, Martin Cochrane, and Gilly Gabriel who accompanied her to audition for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she spent three arduous and magic years with some of the best in the profession; Patsy Rodenburg and Sue Lefton to name a few.

In France children since the 19th century grew up with the stories of Comtesse de Ségur. The tales of Sophie the impish little girl always getting into trouble and trying to learn from her mistakes still shape generations.
Living at the Chateau des Nouettes in Normandy, a gift from her father as her children grew up and left to have their own families. In 1849, at 50 years old Sophie began to write stories for her grandchildren. Each of the stories had a moral and were not always filled with rainbows and butterflies. She used the names of her children and grandchildren in the stories but her most popular was based on her life and shared her name.
Growing up her mother was horrible. She was often locked in a room for days at a time without any food or water. In public she would be hit and ridiculed and all of that stayed with her and came out on the pages of her stories.

Lala Drona (b. 1988) is a Venezuelan-American painter and videaste, born in Denver, Colorado. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado, Lala Drona has since published and exhibited her work internationally. Most recently, her videos and paintings exploring digital spaces and the female gaze, were shown at the Cite des Arts de Paris.

190: Former Washington Post Journalist Anne Swardson shares her work in Paris
I’m American, but I’ve lived in Paris for 25 years and the stories I write are far off the tourist track. I tell tales of the invisible people – a one-man band in the Tuileries, a pickpocket near the Opéra, a lonely bus driver, a despairing spice vendor and an evil child in postwar Paris.
A former journalist for the Washington Post, I turned to fiction some years ago. A short story I wrote (about the one-man band) was selected by blind submission to appear in "Vengeance," edited by Lee Child, in the 2012 anthology of the Mystery Writers of America. I also am the co-winner of Noir Nation’s Golden Fedora Award for “The Wheels on the Bus,” and my story “A Day at the Office” appeared in the January issue of Mystery Weekly.

To celebrate this lovely Valentine’s Day we are exploring more of the art of the Musée du Louvre and all the definitions of love that they convey. Last week we shared Psyché and Cupid, and today we uncovered a few more.
From Catherine de Medici and her monument to her husband’s heart that inspired a beloved Paris monument you all know today to the father’s love and appreciation for saving his daughter. Along with the painting of a king's beloved that always arises a few giggles and the throws of passion that are surrounded by suggestive hints. Vivian Maier stacks up next to many of the greatest photographers of our time, but she never planned on being seen. Born February 1, 1926 to a French mother and an Austrian-American father she would be remembered as never without her camera after the age of 10. Vivian’s parents separated when she was just three and in 1932 she left for her mother's native France. Influenced by Jeanne Bertrand an artist and photographer and close friend to her mother, she began to take photos around the small Haute Alps village.
In 1951, Vivian was hired as a nanny for a Southampton family. In 1956 she moved to Chicago and began to work with the Gensburg family and their three boys who would remain in her life until her death. A series of families followed and each move included her 200 boxes filled with every single piece of her life including hundreds of undeveloped film canisters.

There are always a few women in history that are remembered for shaking things up a bit. Olympe de Gouges is definitely one of them and she did it back in the 18th century.
Born May 7, 1748 in Montauban, Marie-Olympe Mouisset wasn’t sure who her father was. At 17 in 1765 she married Louis-Yves Aubrey de Gourges. The next year son Pierre was born and just two years after their marriage her husband was swept away in a flood.
In 1770 she moved to Paris with her sister and became the belle of the Paris Salons. Jacques Biétrix de Rozières who was a director of a military transport company who wanted to marry the lovely Olympe but she knew she had more freedom as a writer as a widow than married.
Olympe began to speak up through her words and on the stage. Creating her own theater company of women that would perform her plays. Her first play was Zamore et Mirza. The story of slavery in the colonies that never took the stage. It was 1784 and the Comedie Francaise received death threats…

EP 179: Paris History Avec a Hemingway (Sainte Geneviève Part 2)
In the second episode on the life of Sainte Genevieve we look at how she is remembered. When you visit the many churches of France you will find small marble plaques in many of the chapels. The Ex-votos are messages of appreciation to a certain saint or to Christ. These can also come in other forms as well.
There are many dedicated to Sainte Genevieve all over Paris in statues, art and even a grand piece of architecture. After her relics were used to save the city and country, members of the government and royalty thought it was a smart PR move to align themselves with Sainte Genevieve.
The largest ex-voto was as a result of a promise made by Louis XV. On August 17, 1744. At war with Austria, Louis XV fell deathly ill in the city of Metz. He said a prayer that if he survived he would have a church built and dedicated to Sainte Genevieve. He survived and kept his promise, but it took ten years before the funds were requested and another ten before anything began.

Maureen O'Donoghue is a 24-year-old Franco-Irish singer and musician. Born in Paris in a musical family to an Irish father and French mother, she has been involved in various artistic projects including rock bands (Hobe, Silène and Black Alice), acting (music videos as well as a punk drummer in Microbe et Gasoil, Michel Gondry, 2014), and guest singing on a progressive jazz album, focusing more on her Irish heritage over the last few months with new folk duo Saelkie Folk and regular performances at the Paris Hootenanny with a flute player and guitarist Michel Sikiotakis. She has also participated in the production of the upcoming TG4 documentary on Irish composer Sean O Riada. Paris itself is a living museum. Filled with over 150 museums and the streets that ooze with history and architecture spanning centuries. Before we had my beloved Musée du Louvre we had the churches that filled their walls with art from some of the biggest artists of the time. The Louvre opened in 1793 and over three hundred years before Notre Dame de Paris opened its doors.
Art of the past was very different then it is now. Today it is just as much about the artist itself sometimes selling for millions of dollars just because of their name. One hundred years ago today, on 20 December 1921, the newlywed Hemingway’s arrived in Paris. After almost two weeks on the S.S. Leopoldina that left New York on December 8th the two finally arrived in the City of Light. Relying on Hadley and her eight years of French, the two found their way through day to day life. Friend and author Sherwood Anderson armed Hem with letters of introduction to other American expats and even made them a reservation at the Hotel Jacob et d’Angleterre on the Rue Jacob in Saint Germain-des-Près.
Filled with fellow Americans, the hotel fittingly sits on the same spot that Benjamin Franklin and John Adams worked on the Treaty of Paris in 1783 that would end the American Revolution. Sonia Stern born November 14, 1885 in the Ukraine. Her parents were working class and at 5 years old her mother gave her up for adoption to her wealthy uncle Henri Terk. Henri showed the young Sonia a life of art and culture and exposed her to an education she would not have received from her working class parents. At 18 she was fluent in four languages and was off to the Academy of Fine arts in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1904.

EP 169: Paris History Avec a Hemingway (Musée d'Orsay)
35 years ago this week the Musée d’Orsay opened to the impressionist, loving public for the first time. It’s hard to image a time when the museum wasn’t part of the landscape of central Paris with the lovely clocks standing over the Seine.
The first stone of the Palais d’Orsay was laid April 4, 1810 but the fall of Napoleon would delay the finish until 1838. The Council d’Etat decided to move in to finally complete the building in 1842. Less than three decades later the beautiful building would be destroyed. On the night of May 23, 1871 the fires of the Commune engulfed the building and for 27 years the burnt out remains of the Palais d’Orsay remained.
In 1898 it was finally destroyed and while Paris was in the heyday of the Belle Epoque, the upcoming 1900 Universal Exposition was quickly approaching and a central train station was needed. Marie Laurencin is known for her lovely pastel dreamy paintings but she was also able to do something few female artists were able to do. Marie was accepted into the folds of the biggest artists of the time and held her own.
Born on October 31, 1883 she showed very early, against her mothers wishes, a talent for art. At 18 she enrolled in the porcelain painting school at Sévres, much like Renoir started. The next year she joined the Humbert Academy and met fellow artists Georges Braque and Francis Picabia who led her into the art circles of Paris.
Gallery owner Clovis Sagot on Rue Laffitte gave Marie her first exhibition where she would meet Picasso, Delauney, Rousseau, Max Jacobs. and poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Marie inspired the struggling writer and served as his muse over their six year relationship. Her first painting she ever sold featured the poet surrounded by his friends, Picasso, Fernande Olivier, Stein, Gillot and Cremnitz and was purchased by Gertrude Stein.

Cygnet Theatre was founded in Paris by an international group of theatre artists looking to create, develop, and perform plays in the classical repertoire. The company is run by a board of administration, and all members of the team serve a creative function vital to Cygnet Theatre’s ability to thrive.
Following the success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the decision was made to form a company to produce high quality theatre in the heart of Paris. During the Summer Seasons, Cygnet performs in the beautiful Jardin des Arènes de Montmartre.

Paris is filled with museums and a few stand out over the rest. Of course, there is my love, the Musée du Louvre, and the Orsay and smaller ones like the Picasso and the Delacroix. However, one that might not be on the list for those heading to Paris for just a few days but should be is the Musée Rodin.

The Musée Rodin is housed in the Hotel Biron but that's not where the story begins. Wealthy wig maker Abraham Peyrene de Moras was also a close confidant of Louise Francoise de Bourbon, the legitimized daughter of Louis XIV and past podcast subject, Madame de Montespan. Moras tapped architect Jean-Jacques Aubert who also designed the nearby Palais Bourbon for Louise Francoise. Between 1727 & 1732 on the Rue de Varenne outside the city of Paris, the Louis XIV-style mansion was built.

My grandfather being the ever-curious traveler, he loved spending his days exploring the cobbled streets that he could walk on for hour after endless hour, and his daily one-man gratinee de l’ogninon hunt looking for the best bowl he could find in Paris. Wondering the streets taking countless photo after photo and documenting what he did in his journals, he fully lived and took in all the amazing things that Paris has to offer. A little about me…I first moved to Paris in Fall 2012 for a semester abroad program. At the time, I had absolutely no idea how I would fall completely head-over-heels in love with the city. I returned the following summer for another study abroad program. It was during that time that I first imagined myself living in Paris full time.
Life happened, but I never let go of my dream of living in Paris. Five years later, the stars aligned for me and I moved from Dallas, Texas to Paris. My daily routine in here is full of new challenges, adventures, and excitement. It’s pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to truly connect with myself and pursue my passions and dreams. Not every day is extraordinary, but I’m lucky to live in a city with as much energy and history as Paris.

The Chateau Versailles, just the name evokes glamour, golden splendor and the regal days of France. We cover it all today on the newest episode of Paris History Avec a Hemingway.
Versailles began in 1604 when Louis XIII would come out to the woods to hunt and decided to build a hunting lodge. In 1623 a small lodge next to a windmill that sat on top of a low hill was the humble beginning that is hard to imagine today. Louis XIII would gather his hunting friends and head out to the lodge. His wife Anne d’Autriche had her own suite of rooms but she wasn’t allowed to stay the night. There is a lot more to the “boys weekend” at the Louis XIII Versailles and I’ll let you fill in the blanks.

EP 139: Paris History Avec A Hemingway (Madame Elisabeth)
In our final episode about the ladies of Marie Antoinette there wasn’t anyone closer in those final months than her sister in law Madame Elisabeth.
The youngest child of Louis and Marie-Joseph, her older brothers would become king over the next 70 years. Born on May 3, 1764 a year later her father died and she spent most of her time in the shadow of the older brothers living a carefree life at court. When she came of age, Louis XVI wanted to marry her off but she begged him not to so she can remain with her family. Which is exactly what she did until the end of her life.
Pledging a life to God she was off the marriage market and at 19 her brother purchased a chateau in Montreuil as her own private estate. She wasn’t allowed to spend the night there until she was 25 so she visited each day riding a horse back and forth each night. The day she came of age on May 3, 1789 she stayed what would be only a few months at her beloved chateau.

Madame Campan was one of the only women to work for Marie Antoinette, survive the Revolution, work for Napoleon and end with another Bourbon king when most didn’t survive past Marie Antoinette. Jeanne-Louise Henriette Campa was born October 2, 1752 in Paris. Her father was a foreign affairs clerk sent to London to work on the 1763 peace treaty and took a large role in her education. Teaching her italian and english she also became well versed in the piano, guitar and harp.
At 16 years old she became the reader to the daughters of Louis XV and two years later the lady in waiting to the young and shy Marie Antoinette. The two became very close as they were so near in age. The day after Louis XV died and Marie was named queen Jeanne-Louise married Pierre Francois Berthollet. The marriage resulted in a son, Henri but that was about it. The two separated but never divorced and she spent all her time at Versailles.

I'm a musician. Learned to play guitar in high school after I watched the movie The School of Rock with Jack Black which inspired me so much that I became a rocker and wanted to have a band! Since then I realized that music is the language in which I can express my feelings, myself, and feel good about it.
I lived in a small, conservative city in Croatia where people believed that if you listen to rock or metal and have long hair means you are a Satanist and drug addict. So it was hard to organize a band but I had a couple of small rock and metal bands but this was all in the garage and with friends.
After I started studying in Zagreb, the capital city, I started playing guitar on the street. The fun-loving Polignac was born September 8, 1749, in Paris into the French noble family of the Nouilles. Married in 1767 to Jules de Polignac, captain of the Royal Regiment and a member of the court at Versailles.
Through her sister-in-law who was the lady of honor to Madame Elisabeth, she was invited frequently to court. Gabrielle was very beautiful and was easily noticed and even caught the eye of Marie Antoinette. One of the most faithful and trusted ladies of Marie Antoinette served by her side until the bitter end. Madame de Lamballe was born in Turin and raised under the iron thumb of her father Prince Louis Victor of Savoy. The duke of Penthievre was keen to marry his son Louis-Alexandre, Prince of Lamballe and descendant of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
Their short & rough marriage lasted from January 1767 to May 1768 when he died as a result of his free loving ways. Marie Antoinette is known for her style, love of fashion and jewelry and in the end what led to her demise. One woman is behind her look more than anyone else including those amazing hair styles. Rose Bertin had a knack for style that drew the attention of a very devoted following that went back to her early days.
Born July 2, 1747 in Abbeville, she moved to Paris and started working at the Trait Galant boutique at just 16 years old. Owner Mademoiselle Pagalle dressed the ladies in the court of Louis XV, and the young assistant was much in demand. It was more about the adornings on the dress then the dress itself. Lace, feathers, jewels and ribbons creating a one of a kind dress that allowed the ladies to stand out at court.

Sunny Buick was born in British Columbia, Canada, and grew up all over Northern California, finally ending up in the Bay Area in her teenage years. In 1986 while attending a high school especially for artists, she started to hang out in the milieu of San Francisco tattooing; and began to tattoo professionally in 1992. She served a formal apprenticeship with Henry Goldfield for 6 years.
In 2003 she organized a gigantic art show and catalog called SCI Fi Western, with over 100 artists; which won an award with the Bay Guardian magazine. Shortly thereafter she left San Francisco to realize her adolescent dream to speak French and live in Paris. She has shown in galleries in many parts of the world and in some museums including Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Foster Museum, Wisconsin, and MIAM (Museum of Modest Arts), Sete, France.

One of the newest sensations in Paris this summer has been the very long awaited reopening of Samaritaine. It started as a tiny store on the corner of Rue du Pont Neuf by a couple that spent their entire life in retail.
Marie Louise Ja Ja, born on July 1, 1838 came from a large family and was forced to start working at a very early age to help support the family. In 1853 she moved to Paris with her aunt and got a job at La Nouveau Heloise selling lingerie. It was at her next job working at the candy counter of the Bon Marche that she met Ernest Cognaq.
The two married on January 17, 1872 and opened their own store just off the Pont Neuf. It was located just steps away from the pump house that stood on stilts in the Seine next to the bridge. Built under Henri IV to provide water to the district around the Louvre, the building was topped with a sculpture by Bernard & René Fremin. Berthe Morisot was a young art student that had the looks of the dark haired Spanish beauties he was obsessed with. Morisot became an accomplished artist herself and married Manet’s brother, creating a devoted family of artists.
Victorine Meuret sat for him in his most scandalous and famous paintings. Naked and looking at the viewer pulling them into the world of a courtesan and a picnic by a river. In one of his very last paintings, he depicted the real life waitress at a popular Paris music hall.

When I first set foot in Paris as a teenager, les pyramides in front of the Louvre didn’t exist, the Musée d’Orsay was a defunct train station with broken windows, and the cathedral of Notre Dame would continue to display a sooty black façade for another twenty plus years. Still, Paris had that certain je ne sais quoi. And, like so many before me, I was hooked…well, nearly.
In early 1985, I immersed myself in Provence and in the French way of life as a college student–and was captivated. Though my French needed (a lot) more work, I was touched by everything…the light, the landscape, the colors…the art and architecture that were old…the Roman ruins that were really old…the lively, open-air markets with dazzling fruits and vegetables…strawberries that tasted more strawberry than any I had ever eaten…and of course, the French people who were just so… French. Dora Maar from the end of her life until today is widely labeled the “Muse of Picasso”. As with most women in history they are relegated to being a postscript in a man's story, Dora was much more than that.
Born on November 22, 1907 Henriette Markovitch in Paris at the Tarnier Maternity Clinic at 89 Rue d’Assas. Her father Joseph was a Croatian architect and her mother Louise-Julie Voisin from Cognac and owned a fashion boutique. In 1910 she headed to Buenos Aires with her parents for her father's job and returned to Paris a few years later. Enrolling in the Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs and l’Academie Julian in 1923 and 1927 one of the few that allowed women artists.
Photography was her art form and from early on her eye for details for her into the exclusive clubs of artists. Born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Karen grew up with the aspiration to be a comedian, a musician, or both… She groomed these crafts from a young age by making everyone around her laugh and beginning a lifetime romance with the flute at the age of 9. She went on to study drama at Temple University in Philadelphia and played in a series of bands.

Louise Joesphine Weber is remembered more for her adoptive name La Goulue and how she got the name. Born on June 12, 1866, in Clichy the love of dancing was instilled in her at a very early age by her mother. By 1882 she had moved to Montreuil and started dancing at the Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre.
Customer and journalist Charles Desteque noticed her and introduced her to a friend, Charles Zidler who would later play a prominent role in her life. In the meantime, she continued to dance at the many bal musettes in Paris including the Closerie des Lillas, Elysees-Montmartre and the Bullier Bal.
Charles came back into her life in 1889 when he and Joseph Oller were opening a new stage in Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge, and asked Louise to be their headline dancer. Anne Marie Chassaigne was born June 2, 1869 in La Flèche in the Loire and raised in Brittany. On July 15, 1886, at 17 she married Joseph Armand Henri Pourpee who was a naval officer living in Marseille. Joseph would be gone a lot and Anne Marie filled her time with another man.
Suffering from frequent attacks by her husband that left scars on her chest for the rest of her life, it all culminated one night when he discovered her with her lover. He pulled out his pistol and shot at her, nicking her wrist. Anne Marie couldn’t take it much more, sold her piano, left her son with his father and his parents, and moved to Paris.

In 1848 Louis Philippe commissioned 20 statues for the Jardin du Luxembourg. He picked each one that went from Queen Berthe to Anne d’Autriche and included Jeanne d’Arc. The Maid of Orleans was sculpted in 1845 by Francois Rude and was placed in the south side of the garden in 1852. In 1871 she was removed and eventually came to live in the Louvre.

Gabrielle d’Estrées, a woman known more for her risque painting than of her life itself. Gabrielle was born around 1573, and daughter of Antoine d’Estrées, Baron de Boulonnois and Françoise de la Bourdaisieres. She was one of eleven children, seven of which were girls and gave them the moniker “seven deadly sins” by the Marquis de Sevigné.
Gabrielle mingled in the court of Henri III and where she met Roger de Bellegarde who was close with Henri III and Henri IV. On the occasion that Roger was meeting with Henri IV, Gabrielle was spotted at court, and Henri was instantly obsessed. For six months he chased her and she resisted until she finally gave in.
Henri IV did not hide his relationship or the love he had for Gabrielle, even in the midst of trying to get his marriage to Marguerite de Valois annulled. Not exactly a natural actor, but her looks got the attention of the producers and audience and repeatedly got her roles onstage at the Theatre du Parc de Bruxelle in Paris. Marie- Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles, aka the Duchesse de Berry was born in Naples the daughter of the Crown Prince Francis Duke of Calabria and Marie Clementine of Austria, niece of Marie Antoinette. At the time of her birth in 1798 Napoleon was charging his way through Italy forcing the family to flee to Palermo and later pushing them into Sisily.
Marie-Caroline found her way to France after her marriage to Charles Ferdinand, Duc de Berry son of Charles X. Louis XVIII was in power and without an heir Sixty years old and a widow he declared his nephew his rightful heir to the throne. Charles Ferdinand needed a wife, although he had many mistresses and children in France and England. The two were married in Notre Dame de Paris on June 17, 1816.

Heloise was born around 1092, it is unsure of her actual birthday and can swing into the 1070s depending on what you read. Heloise would spend most of her childhood raised by her brother and at 11 would be sent to Paris to live with her uncle Fulbert.
Uncle Fulbert served as a canon at the Hotel Dieu de Paris on the Ile de la Cité where he also lived. His house on the Quai des Fleurs was large and had room for a few renters so he offered a room to Abelard. My name is Camille Roux dit Buisson, I was born and I live in Paris. I grew up surrounded by art, with my parents who were passionate, and especially because my father is an art dealer who started collecting Jacqueline Marval (1866 – 1932)’s work from the 1980s. He took me to Drouot and the Louvre des Antiquaires (where he had a gallery until the 2010s) all the time, which started to build the passion and admiration I have for art.
I used to work in fashion PR, communication, and marketing while keeping a foot in the arts; I would organize fashion events and shows but also art-related ones. After 3 years, I decided to join my father and to start working as an art dealer at the occasion of the 2018 Paris Biennale at the Grand Palais. Last week we shared the story of Djuna Barnes and you can’t have Djuna without the story of Natalie Barney, Natalie was born in October 1876 in Dayton Ohio to a very wealthy family. Raised with an appreciation of art, music, and culture from a very young age they spent weekends in museums and author readings.
One reading while in New York over the summer took a young Natalie and her mother to a bookshop to listen to Oscar Wilde. While he was speaking a group of young boys began throwing candied cherries at Natalie. When Oscar saw this he picked her up and put her on his knee and read a story to her. Later in life, she would date Oscar’s niece.
In 1887 she went to Paris for the first time with her mother who was chasing her dream of being an artist. It began her instant love affair with France and she would return four years later traveling all over Europe and finally settling in Paris.

Franco-American artist and photographer Kali Vermès started making terrariums to satisfy both her green thumb and creative impulses with one activity. The microcosms she creates, under the moniker, Grow Little, are carefully conceived tiny, verdant worlds.
Born in Paris, Kali grew up in an apartment filled with hanging plants. Djuna Barnes, the woman who mingled with the Lost Generation was born in 1892 in New York and would leave her mark in Paris.
Born into a rather different family, her father had two wives and would later marry Djuna off to his second wife's brother. Shortly after her mother had too much she took her kids and left for New York. There Djuna began working as a writer for the New York Eagle. Not only was she a talented writer but also an illustrator who would draw pictures that accompanied each of her articles.
In 1921 she arrived in Paris and settled in Saint Germain. She instantly mingled with the newly arriving American ex-pat group and the large group of lesbians that settled in Paris led by Natalie Barney, who will talk about next week. The two had a short affair, which was a right of passage for just about every lesbian that arrived in Paris. Their relationship was short but remained friends as long as Djuna lived in Paris.

Jeanne Bécu was born on August 19, 1743, in Vaucouleurs in the northeast of France. Her mother Anne Bécu who was known for her beauty and her father was unknown. It is thought that her father could be a Franciscan monk, Jean-Jacques Baptiste de Vaubernier. Anne had worked as a seamstress at the local convent and could be where the scandalous act occurred.

Born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux into a large family of artists.Her mother Sophie Marquis married Raymond Bonheur who was also her drawing teacher. Raymond painted landscapes of Bordeaux and portraits and instilled a love of art in all his children.
As a child when Rosa was struggling at school her mother used her love of drawing to her advantage. Asking Rosa to draw an animal for each of the letters of the alphabet was just the trick she needed. Her mother died when she was young and her school life suffered. Expelled twice her father finally took her out of school and focused on teaching her how to paint.
Raymond specialized in Realism and to help Rosa he had their Paris home filled with animals. From squirrels and rabbits to ducks and sheep the young artist had all she needed to begin her life as a painter of animals. Artist Eva Gonzalez may not be as well known as her fellow female impressionist artists but she should be.
Born on April 19, 1849, in Paris, her father Emmanuell Gonzalez was a Spanish novelist and playwright and her mother was a trained musician. With their creativity handed down to her at a very early age, she was drawn to painting and sketching.
A chance meeting through artists Alfred Stevens in February 1869 would put her on the path to being a known artist. Stevens took Eva to the studio of Edouard Manet who at the time was obsessed with anything Spanish and Eve had the look he loved. He immediately wanted to paint her and took her in as his one and only ever student.
Manet was going through a lot at the time. The critics were slamming him for Olympia and Dejeuner sur l’herbe and he was starting to pull himself away from the art world and turn into a shut-in. Marina Khorosh is a writer and copywriter living in New York City. Originally from Russia, she spent her twenties living in New York, after which she moved to Paris to study at Institut Français de la Mode. While in Paris, she launched a blog called Dbag Dating to share her Parisian dating exploits, which soon earned her a role as a writer of a French girl style column for Vogue.com. She was then approached by French publisher J'ai Lu to write a book based on her Parisian dating experiences. The book, Love in Translation, was released in September 2020 and is a coming of age memoir of five years of Marina's life, relayed through 12 romantic encounters that shaped her along the way.

Jeanne Antoinette Poisson was destined to be the mistress of the king. As a child, her mother took her to a fortune-teller who told the young girl that she would one day hold the heart of the king. From then on she was called Reinette, little queen.
Her mother set out from that moment to raise her to be a mistress and hired the best teachers to educate her in art, dancing, and the theater. In 1740 at the age of 19, she was married to Charles Guillaume, nephew of her guardian Tourneheim with one clause. They would be happily married and she would never leave him unless the king came calling.
Poisson and her husband lived in the Chateau d’Etoiles where she would hold lavish Salons with Voltaire, Fontenelle, and Montesquieu in attendance. Her name began spreading all the way to court. Martha Gelhorn, born in St Louis in 1908 to two parents that wanted much more for their daughter than the role women were to play at the time. Her father George was a doctor and her mother Edna was politically active in the suffrage movement and also served as a president of Bryn Mawr. Her father pulled her out of school as soon as he learned the nuns had covered the pictures of the female anatomy and took her to the Mary Institute where her mother was the president. It was also the school of another young girl that had been there a few years before, Hadley Richardson.
After attending Bryn Mawr for one year she decided to leave and chase her career as a writer. The backdrop of her debut novel MOONLIGHT IN ODESSA is the booming business of email-order brides, an industry where love and marriage meet sex and commerce. It was chosen as a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Debut as well as a book of the month in National Geographic Traveler. It was published in 12 languages.
Her second novel THE PARIS LIBRARY is based on the true story of the courageous librarians at the American Library in Paris during World War II. Janet learned about the story when she worked at the Library. It is published in 26 languages.

At Adrienne’s 10th birthday, every guest went home with a ruby ball cactus as their party favor. Although Adrienne preferred otherwise, it was inevitable. Every year party guests left her birthday with plants in their arms. It was because both of her parents worked in the horticulture industry in San Diego, California.

Born in Paris on July 1, 1804, Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin as she was known long before she went by George. As many of these stories go, her mother was a prostitute and her father only married her in the final weeks of her pregnancy. Luckily her grandmother Marie-Aurore de Saxe took her in.
At 16 she was married off to François Casimir Dudevant and two children came shortly after but the marriage wasn’t a happy one and François was happy to spend all her money and sleeping with all the staff. In 1831 George left for Paris and met a group of writers including Jules Sandeau. The two began an affair and also wrote articles together under the name J. Sand.
