The Impeccable Transmission of the Hebrew Bible: An Interview with Dr. Susan Schmidt from Jerusalem
In this episode of our "Keeping it Israel" podcast, Dr. Susan Schmidt (PhD Hebrew Bible Manuscripts) talks to Jeff about the meticulous, skilled and seemingly worshipful way in which Jewish scribes transmitted the Hebrew Bible. For the first time in 1000 years, Dr. Schmidt transcribed the 16 carpet illuminations of Codex Leningrad, on which our modern Bibles are based. She is particularly interested in these manuscripts as material witnesses to our faith.

Eileen Schuller is Professor of Religious Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario. For the last roughly 40 years, she has been a leading translator, editor, and publisher of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Eileen formerly served as President of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies. She is associate editor of The Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls and author of the book, The Dead Sea Scrolls: What Have We Learned?

JERUBBAAL: The Bible's Nickname for Gideon Has Been Unearthed! Prof. Yosef Garfinkel Explains
In this episode, Jeff talks to Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, Head of the Institute of Archaeology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem about the inscription unearthed in 2019 while he and his team were excavating ancient Ziklag. Scholars agree that the inscription reads "Jerubbaal", the nickname the Bible gives Gideon in the book of Judges:
'So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal that day, saying, “Let Baal contend with him”' (Judges 6:32).

ZIKLAG FOUND: Archaeologist Talks About Unearthing the Philistine City Given to King David
In this episode of "Keeping it Israel" Jeff talks to Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, Head of the Institute of Archaeology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem about what he's discovered in the 5 years he's been excavating at Khirbet al-Ra'i. According to Yossi, the site is ancient, Ziklag, found exactly as described in the Bible. The finds there are consistent with the Bible story about King David and his complicated interactions with the Philistines. From 2007-2013, Yossi excavated Khirbet Qeiyafa and discovered a fortress dating to the time of King David (1000 BCE), overlooking the valley where the bible says David slew the Giant Philistine, Goliath. There, among other incredible finds, he unearthed an inscription that is possibly the earliest Hebrew inscription known. According to Yossi, the Bible story about King David and the Philistine giant Goliath is not as far-fetched as some might think.

Reflections on the Holocaust & Jewish Christian Victims of the Holocaust, with Kelvin Crombie
To honour International Holocaust Remembrance Day this week, Jeff interviews author and researcher Kelvin Crombie from Perth, Australia. Kelvin and Jeff were together on a tour of Poland's concentration camps to study the Jewish life then and now as well as learn about the Holocaust. Kelvin has also been involved in a research project documenting the Jewish Christian Victims of the Holocaust. The Magdala Stone Explained
Jeff teaches about the significance of the Magdala stone found at the archaeological site of the home of Mary Magdalene and what is now the Magdala Tourist Center on the shores of Sea of Galilee near Migdal, Israel. Learn how the markings on the stone give us insight into one of the purposes of the first century synagogue as a place for worship and how they point to the temple in Jerusalem. In addition, we point out the likelihood of a 'Jesus' connection with Magdala and the synagogue there.
