Joel Green Reveals How To Extract Strength From The Struggle
Today we have Joel Green to talk with us about “filtering”, managing your mindset, using your painful experiences to push yourself, and so much more.
Joel Green is CEO of Pro Level Training, the National Director of Nike Sports Camps, a former professional basketball player, and a renowned motivational speaker. After retiring from his career in professional basketball, Joel Green founded Pro Level Training (PLT), which has become a 7-figure company.
In addition, Joel Green is the National Director for Nike Sports Camps as well as an accomplished speaker. He was honored to speak to thousands and deliver his own TED Talk. His unique differentiator in business and as an individual, is his ability to see life objectively from multiple vantage points.
Unfortunate circumstances as a youth helped to groom and refine Joel into adulthood. Growing up in an abandoned home and seeing both sides of life has really helped him to connect with people over time.
Green’s messages deliver tangible advice for others to attain their desired outcome, many of these messages will be conveyed in his first book to be released in the fall. Joel Green has a B.A. in Psychology from Rider University, which has helped to fuel his ambition to inspire others. I remember it like it was yesterday. After all, who would forget the first time they were fired from a job. It all started with a rather innocent email from my manager at the time and it was scheduled for 4 pm on a Friday. A time and date I would come to learn were pretty usual for having these sort of meetings. It gives you time to cool off, they say or drink the pain away others say.
Here I was thinking this was a regular meeting with my manager to talk about the plans for the week, objectives and the regular 1 to 1 not knowing it was about to be a meeting, from hell. How to give tough feedback without damaging your relationship
A while ago when I was toying with the idea of getting into writing, coaching and public speaking I remember once asking someone I look up to and admire for feedback. He was very direct and quite frankly speaking negative and this dented my confidence for quite a while.
Now, he probably never intended for his feedback to have such an impact on me and I don't tell this story to denigrate him. Rather, I tell this story to shine a light on how much care we need to apply when offering feedback to anyone who does us the honour of asking us for it.
Giving the answer or feedback in the wrong way can have a negative impact on the relationship so there is nothing like learning some simple ways to give feedback.
The trick is simple and straight forward. It’s called a sandwich. It’s called this because it means you tell them the good things they do well, then the thing you want them to improve and then what they do well. In other words, you tell them the good, the bad and the good.

I had a project manager I worked with once. He had his strengths but one I particularly appreciated was his ability to have tough conversations with leadership teams and still come out smelling like roses if you catch my drift.
I asked him how he did it and he said, Femi the mistake a lot of people make is they get too caught up in the emotion. If people have to make a decision make it a fact-based discussion. In other words, offer them the facts and then leave it to the Exec team to make the decision. The one thing you have to do is make sure you have always done your best as it pertains to your responsibility as this often moves the conversation away from making a decision to your shortcoming.

I had a couple of conversations with a couple of friends this week. The first friend tells me; he has had two interviews A couple of days I have been speaking to lots of people and we got to speaking about the Coronavirus and its impact and I have had two completely different conversations. On the one hand, one person says..projects are about to be closed down and everybody is nervous about what happens next. The other person says he has had 4 interviews. I repeat 4 interviews in the past week. In every crisis, there are winners and losers. Some people will make money and some will lose money. Some people will use this as an opportunity to rise while others dont.
What are you going to do to survive? Are you caught up in the news and losing sight of the fact that this chaos and complete turning of the table also means that you need to be ready to adapt. You have to be fit for the future and present.

As I look back over my life realise that for better or worse, I dont get too hung up with wins and losses. Now I use the word for better or worse because it can be a weakness and strength. A weakness because it means I don't get the benefit of feeling the pain enough to learn sometimes but a strength because it means I dont can move on pretty quickly and stay on an even keel. Whenever I lose a client or a job my view was always that 'some say you're fired, I say I'm up for a change of environment and pay rise'

Managing Expectations - Avoid failure and get it right 1st time
Many years ago I got a job as a Analyst in a some tech company. Looking back I still dont know how it happened but short of the story I was a bit too click happy with my mouse and just applied for all jobs with the word Analyst in the title. So imagine my surprise when I got called back for a role as a Strategy Analyst which for those who know is a lot to do with spreadsheets and calculations. Now I must have done pretty well cos I got offered the role. Now this is where is turned bad. They wanted a wiz at Excel and got a dude who just knew the basics. In a couple of weeks I had the CEO asking me for top level work and I couldn't do it. A few months later I was on the street.
