This podcast will be dedicated to leadership development for Finance and Accounting professionals, where we will focus on leadership topics such as providing a purpose for our team, building trust, improving communication, and developing our team. 102: Use the SMART Goal Setting Method for Better Goal Planning
When we set our goals, let’s use the SMART goal setting methodology so we set realistic goals that we can achieve because we have properly thought through the best way to plan them and achieve them. You know I how I feel about New Years’ resolutions, because at this point, most people have given up on them since they had no solid foundation in being achieved. Let’s plan out goals that make sense for us.

1. SMART goal setting is a method of setting goals that is widely used in business and organizations. The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These five criteria are used to ensure that goals are well-defined and achievable.
2. Specific: A specific goal has a clear target or outcome that is well defined. It should answer the questions of what, why and how
3. Measurable: A measurable goal can be quantified or tracked in some way. This allows for progress to be monitored and the goal's achievement to be evaluated.
4. Achievable: The goal should be realistic and attainable. It should be something that can be achieved with the resources and capabilities available.
5. Relevant: A relevant goal is one that aligns with the overall objectives and mission of the organization or individual.
6. Time-bound: A goal should have a specific deadline for completion. This creates a sense of urgency and helps to focus efforts towards achieving the goal.

The most difficult part of problem solving is to identify what the real problem is, followed by performing the analysis to develop viable options, and then deciding the solution which is best for the organization moving forward. Monthly close isn't only to close the books, but to really figure out what happened so we can determine if the business met expectations and we can make necessary adjustments. Bonus Episode 5: Organizational Culture
How do we overcome our strong Organizational Culture, that normally helps us achieve excellence, when extraordinary circumstances require us to go against it?
In this bonus episode, I talk about the strong culture of the U.S. Armed Forces, which requires close-in training by its personnel. But, due to COVID-19, military personnel have to get away from each other to protect themselves, which means they can't train like they normally have to do. And military units love to train. They need to train. Training is what they do so they are ready when the nation calls them.

Bonus Episode 4: Recession Proof Your Business
Going forward, it's time to recession proof your business. After recovering from this very unprecedented economic downturn, I am encouraging business owners to prioritize recession proofing their business by developing a plan to survive the next downturn. It will be challenging to small businesses, but we need to do this.
There are many tools available to have and acquire funds to cover operations and pay employees:
1) Prioritize retaining more earnings,
2) Partner with the Small Business Administration to understand and better maximize their tools, programs and education,
3) Partner with your local bank, especially one that is affiliated with the Small Business Administration,
4) Apply for a line of credit to use during an emergency.

During this economic downturn, we are anything but "business as usual." This unique time requires *creative leadership by business owners to save their businesses.* The last few weeks, I have been thinking about a few critical issues that leaders will have to consider once we have recovered and to be better prepared for the next economic crisis.
Business owners and senior leaders must consider the following before the next crisis:
1) Does your business have a crisis plan? What is the trigger for initiating it?
2) How did you care for your employees during this crisis?
3) What IT infrastructure improvements need to be done?
4) Is your business recession proof? Can your business withstand a significant drop in revenue over several weeks, maybe even months? Were you able to create new lines of business?
Future employees will be asking these questions going forward and will want to know how your organization reacted and how well prepared it was for the current economic challenges.

Effective leadership is *built on trust*. Teams and relationships are built on trust. Once trust is lost, it will be difficult to recover. It takes time, and you may never get it back.

What happens to a team when no one trusts the leader, and they can't trust each other?
