From Cenotes to Soul Searching: A Tulum Experience

The 2 Things Keeping You From The Life You Want (Tulum, Mexico)
Hint: It's Not What You Think
While I was in Lake Atitlan Guatemala I had the lesson reinforced that literally anything we want in life is possible and that it really only takes two simple things.
The lake is surrounded by many small and modest villages along with some of the most spectacular resorts and villas that can rival anywhere in the world. That might not sound so special until you hear about HOW these posh places to stay are constructed.
Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanos, which makes most of the lake-side property very very steep. This results in most of the land only being accessible by boat and after that human power. No trucks, no heavy machinery, not even animal assistance (animals are too big). That means everything to build and maintain these structures is all humans carried often up a very very steep hillside.

Why Wanting Keeps You From Having (Lake Atitlán, Guatemala)
Have you been wanting something for a long time, but you just haven't gotten it?
In this episode, I talk about how continuing to want something prevents you from actually having what you want. This can seem counterintuitive. How can I stop wanting something if I don't have it?
I like to call this the Amazon Prime way of living, where you only click the order button once, and then (at least where I live) the package will arrive. There's no need to worry anymore, the order is in. I have it in my mind already and I have an expectancy that it will arrive, but I don't have expectations (it could come from any delivery company and any time).
I've been traveling a lot so I'll use a travel metaphor as well. Continuing to want the same thing is like staying at a ticket counter purchasing tickets for a trip and never leaving the counter to go get on the plane. What you Have is the Enemy of What you Want (Chirripó Costa Rica)

For the past few days I've been staying near the base camp of Chirripó mountain, the highest peak in Costa Rica. I've had a chance to stay with and meet many Americans who have moved to this beautiful region of the world to experience the peace and natural beauty that's offered here.
There's a price to pay for those benefits. You might think it's relationships or comforts that are the enemy of making changes in life, yet it's really something much more subtle and powerful.

Choose Your Challenges (Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica)
*What if you could Choose Your Challenges? Would you choose the ones you currently have, or would you make a different choice?*
I'll show you how it's worked for my travels, but this also works for all aspects of life and I'll explain it more in-depth in the podcast which is recorded right next to the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica. 48 Hours before I was in Northern California, and getting to Costa Rica always from there always requires a lengthy layover and at least one very long leg.
Usually, that's always meant a 4.5 hour red eye flight to Houston followed by a 5 hour layover before getting to land in Costa Rica late afternoon. I'm not saying it's the worst thing in the world (that's probably Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull), but the lack of any sleep for over 24 hours can be rough.
On this trip, I made a different choice. I chose to take a 1 hour flight down to LA, where I then had a 7 hour layover before the 5-hour flight to Costa Rica getting in at 11 PM. To make it even more…

It's Okay to Want Anything
Is it okay to want anything you want? I mean ANYTHING.
There's a trending topic going around the inter-webs of a text message Jonah Hill sends to a girlfriend at the time making some big demands. The consensus tends to be that Jonah is being a giant A$$ Hole and has no right to ask for what he's asking.
He 100% has every right to ask for what asked for. Now before you start bashing me….
She has 100% every right to tell him NO and leave him.
Jonah even acknowledges that this is what she should do in the message!
This is a major lesson for this to me…
"It's okay to desire ANYTHING you want, but that doesn't mean you should get EVERYTHING that you want. "
Could Jonah Hill have been more skillful? Absolutely.

Gratitude And Grief
Can gratitude and grief go together? I recently celebrated my birthday and was so grateful for all the people that helped me celebrate and the great experiences I treated myself to.
I also experienced the grief of celebrating my first birthday since my mom passed away. One of the things she used to always do on my birthday was to always sing me happy birthday, even if it was just as part of a voicemail. She was always the only one to do that.
This year, I still got a birthday song recording. Actually I got two, from two different friends. This sparked both grief and gratitude. I realized that grief indicates that there was always something to be grateful for and that even though my mom is gone, what I was grateful for, the feeling of celebration from someone who cares about me, I still have. In fact, it's actually grown in ways.

The effort to avoid being a disappointment is what sets you up for becoming a disappointment. Either to yourself or someone you care about. On this episode I'll be talking about the antidote to creating disappointment: vulnerability.
When you accept yourself fully, your strengths, weaknesses, desires, fears, all of your wonderful you and then express that openly then the path to disappointment disappears. Just about anything that could be seen as a fault can also be seen as a strength and vice versa.
Does that mean that your weaknesses and fears should be left as is? No, but that doesn't mean that they need to be hidden or fixed immediately. When they known and shared then that allows everyone in your life to work with them without false expectation.

Did you check the game tape? That means review what happened with someone on your team and see all the moves that happened from different angles, different speeds, maybe even going frame by frame to see your part fully.
I just did this with my therapist to break down a text exchange with my father that ended with us (again) deciding to not talk to each other anymore. Before we did the game tape, I was sure that I had done everything I could and that only my dad is that one who had room to change (he hates that I talk about this by the way, but I've learned that shame = stress, and stress leads to death, and I want to live).

You can absolutely ignore your body! I did it for decades and got the benefits of pain, tightness, excess body fat, depression, anxiety…and these are just the benefits I experienced. Other people get even more benefit.
I have been playing around with paying attention to my body and it's definitely been strange in comparison….
This past weekend it was storming like crazy. With the wind and rain going outside was not an option. My body wanted to move and my house was a mess. So listening to my body I organized my house, made extra space, found things to put into storage, and identified a bunch of stuff to throw away.
The benefits? Although, I had some e-waste I had to figure out what to do with, but otherwise it was great to have an uplifted living environment and satisfaction of a job well done and free exercise. I even found some lanterns that were hidden away. Just in time as the power went out that night, so I had these lanterns handy to light my home.

2022 Year in Review and what will '23 Be
If I had to sum up 2022 with one word it would be "Loss"
In addition to my mom who passed suddenly in August, I lost the relationship with my father. There's numerous friendships that have ended in either friction filled fights or just by disconnect. I've lost in romance with the finalization of my divorce, the breakup with a girlfriend at the beginning of the year, and the recent ending to a dating relationship. I've experienced financial losses with retirement accounts down 15%, non-retirement investments down over 45%, and this doesn't even include the loses due to the bankruptcy of Celsius. On the health front I've continued to work with anxiety, back, neck, and shoulder pains, and I had two gum tissue grafts to keep me from losing my lower front teeth.
Despite all of this, I'm the most hopeful in my life that I've ever been. Even though there's still some more letting go that I have to work with, I've gotten to see the amazingness that's come into my life. The new friends, the…

Enjoying Surgery in Cancun
Would you enjoy getting gum tissue surgery? Even in Cancun, Mexico? Probably not. This might not be something you'll ever have to go through, but we all have things in life that we'd rather avoid, but I'm going to share some tips on how these types of experiences can be as enjoyable as possible using the Relax, Recharge, and Reconnect lens.
Relax - I knew I had to have this surgery done and so decided I'll have done the way I want it done. I found a world class doctor in a place I was excited to visit and I'd enjoy recovering in. I also asked lots of questions so that I could feel like I was in good hands. I also realized that I could choose when I did the procedure and also during the procedure I can make requests to take a break, have more numbing, whatever I need. All this allowed me to relax into getting this surgery done.
Recharge - Often if we're sick or recovering we just want to sit around and have time pass. I've found that the time passes faster and the healing is better if…

Going Into The Unknown (Bat Cave In Tulum)
How are you with going into the unknown parts of your life?
What if that unknown was a literal bat cave?
At a recent retreat the center I stayed at had a cenote, which is a freshwater underground pool connected by caves and below ground rivers. This cave had a part that was completely open to the air, but then towards the back was an area that you had to go below the water and come up into an enclosed area to explore further.
When I was first invited back by a fellow participant as I popped my head up into the darkness it was completely overwhelming. He told me that my eyes would adjust and it was completely okay, but I was not okay. I couldn't even understand the point of going further, so I ducked out and went to the sunny pool instead.
The next day, I returned to the cenote alone and decided to poke my head into the hidden cavern. I remembered some of the tips from the previous time, and I went at my own pace. Every few inches I would pause, look back to see the light, then feel…

How easily do you express yourself? Would dress up however you like? Even on Halloween? Halloween is a time of year when we're invited to dress up in ways we wouldn't the other 364 days of the year.
In the past, even on Halloween, I'd usually be holding back. Worried about how others would perceive me.
This year was different: I went full out with how I wanted to dress. I wanted to go as a sun god. I found an amazing mask on Etsy, then I just needed to find some Gold shiny clothes to go with it. The shop didn't have any well-fitting gold body suits so I wandered around and then I saw it: The most amazing gold sequin dress. Could I? Would I? I could at least try it on.

Unless you value hard work regardless of the fruit that it bears (which is a value I'd advising dropping), how do you know if your "Work" is worth it?
Like an investment of money, the expenditure of Physical, Mental, Emotional, or other types of effort are investments of our precious time and energy. When we invest money, we'd like to see a return of more than we put in. Similarly we'd like to get more than we put in for all types of "work."
"Work" goes beyond just what you do as your primary means to earn income. "Work" is involved in caring for your body, deciding how to spend your time, relating with other people, and many other activities.
When "work" is spent on something aligned with your values then it will flow and feel easy. When the "work" leaves you drained, agitated, and questioning "Why do I do this?" then it's likely not in alignment with your values and it's time to put that "work" elsewhere.

It Is What It Is...Not
"It is what it is"
Have you ever used this phrase or heard someone use it? It's often used when there's a frustrating situation that can't be changed.
There isn't much that offends me, but I do find this phrase offensive because it's 100% a lie.
Nothing is 100% static. Nothing is what it is. IT is whatever we interpret IT to be. This is a verifiable fact of Quantum Physics where if you choose to see a photon of light as particle then it behaves as a particle. If you choose to see it as a wave, then it behaves as a wave.
If you choose to see a situation as unchangeable, it will be unchangeable, but if you choose to see a situation as changeable it becomes changeable.
Since all humans have the ability to choose their perspective, it 100% is NOT what it IS. It is what you choose it to be.
I avoid correcting people on this unless I'm actively coaching them, but internally I update the phrase to the following true statement:
"It is what it is, except when it is not"

It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Are
"You can be right or you can be happy."
How do you feel when you read that quote? When I first hear that quote when going to Al-anon meetings, as someone who loved to be right, it did not make me happy. Yet, I really really wanted to be happy.
I thought if I learned the right things and did the right things, THEN I would be happy.
Just as the Free Beer Tomorrow will never be available now. You will never be happy in the future. You can only be Happy now.
Some of you might already be thinking, "but Justin, Two years I ago I wanted to be happy when XYZ happened, then a year ago it happened and I was HAPPY, so I must be able to be Happy in the future!"
Yet, as you recall that event, are you not happy NOW? Just as you were actually only in the moment of NOW back THEN?
We'll dive more into this in this episode of the podcast where I detail why so much of your life is based on you ARE and not on what you KNOW.

How open is your mind to new information?
Or if it doesn't fit with what you've been told by an authority, do you write that off as lies, nonsense, or fake?
Have you ever asked where that authority discern fact from fiction came from? (Hint: It's usually self-given.)
Am I telling you to disbelieve everyone and everything? Absolutely not. Many, if not most authorities have great intentions and beneficial information to improve your life in the proper circumstances.
What are proper circumstances? That where YOU come in.
Be YOUR own TRUTH detector.
Ask this simple, yet powerful question: Based on all my senses and knowledge of the universe, does this information seem true, relevant, and useful to ME?
If the answer is NO, move along. No need to criticize or sling mud. Because just because that knowledge isn't for you, doesn't mean it might not be for someone else. This is all about your personal discernment.

What Would You Do If you Almost Died?
***What Would You Do IF You Almost Died?***
What would be the first thing you do after being released from the hospital after almost losing your life?
Did you answer "clean the house"? I'm guessing not.
That was the answer of someone close to me the day after they got out of the hospital. Since I knew this person so well, my response wasn't surprise or scolding. I simply asked:
"Is someone coming over?"
"Some people from the hospital are coming to check in on me."
This might not make sense to many of you, but to someone like me who has studied habit and belief for as long as I have, it makes total sense.
Our habits and beliefs are so powerful, that they persist, regardless if they actually support or life or not.

When your heart breaks or your body aches, what do you turn towards? Drugs? Distractions? Depression?
Last week I pulled a muscle in my back and pain was practically unbearable. How could I handle this? I turned to Hoʻoponopono for healing. What's that?
Hoʻoponopono is a traditional Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. It's simplicity is only matched by it's power. Repeating it's 4 magic phrases had my back pain free the next day, and I find myself much more calm as I use it throughout my life.

What You Want Is Already So Close - Maybe Too Close
What you need is already so close, maybe too close
Hawks, wildflowers, sunshine, breezes, bay views, redwoods, succulents, and...the Salesforce skyscraper?
Recently I wanted to go for a hike that got me away from the overcast and cold near the Ocean where I live and enjoy some sun and trees. I thought I might have to drive 30 to 45 minutes, but a quick search found everything I wanted and more only 15 minutes away.
I've always loved water, yet growing up as I got older I found myself spending all my time in my room in concrete jungles, even though I was only 25 minutes drive from the beach, a 10 minute walk to swim and sail club, and even had a pool and spa in my backyard.
I was so heads down in to my challenges, that I was missing the joy literally in my own backyard.
Often we make what we want so f*cking hard that we miss how close it might already be. Sometime we can figure this out on our own, but from my experience this is where it's so helpful to check with someone else, lik…

It doesn't bother me because I choose to not see it as a problem for myself. I understand it represents a challenge for many people in terms of jobs, businesses, and lives, and because of that I want the economy to do well, but personally I choose not to worry.
What if...Good, bad, or indifferent you chose to see the news simply as information that you can utilize for ever increasing money and abundance in your life?

This way of living that many of us consciously or unconsciously live by is effectively a big "Go F*ck Yourself" to ourselves.

Your Strategy is Broken - Minimizing the Suffering of Loss
How does it feel when you lose something in life? It could be a relationship, health, money, or almost anything.
Usually it doesn't feel so good. And sometimes it doesn't feel so good for a really really long time.
This pain often comes from the loss of one of our basic human needs being met, like the need for closeness, love, security, expression, etc….we humans have a lot of things we need to be living our #bestlife.
The severity and length of the pain of loss is often related to your strategy of getting these needs met and it's most likely broken, and it's not your fault. You likely never went to the store to shop around for strategies to get your needs met. It's probably a hand me down from whoever raised you.
For example, how upset do you get when the sun goes down each day? Likely not too upset even though sunlight is very important need for human survival. Why? You know this need can be met using lights and at the very least you know the sun will come up again tomorrow. Yo…

I recently had a bad experience at a grocery store. It's a chain I usually try to avoid because I usually have a bad experience, but this store was on my way home, so I stopped into the Unsafeway, and guess what?
The experience was NOT Good! Low selection of items, high prices, it was effectively like a convenience store with way more square footage.
I was so ready with a snarky retort for when the checker was going to ask me, "How are you?" or the even the "Find everything, okay?" But they didn't ask me anything!
I could have proactively shared my complaints, but instead I did something different.
I tuned out.

The sooner this is done the faster joy can enter your life. Recently this happened very quickly when a friend and I went to a Bobba shop and some drinks. They were both awful. I litterally did a spit take when I tried her drink. Instead of forcing ourselves to finish the drinks, we tossed them. On the next corner was another Bobba shop and we got the most amazing drinks we'd had in awhile that delighted our day.
It might be easy to see how this can work with things, but I've learned that also applying this to places and preoccupations brings joy to even more places than just the home.

My first memories of needing to be perfect go back at least to Freshman year of high school, if not earlier. I remember the shame of getting back tests with less than 100% correct. This led to me sometimes getting an A- or <gasp> even a B+ every now and then. This led me to graduate with only a 4.63 GPA and putting me at the low end of the Top 25 students out of a class of around 500.
Was I successful? Most would say that I was, and I still am, but I felt miserable.
The pressure to be perfect at everything was immobilizing. I had to keep up being great at what I was already great at, and I had to avoid anything new. Why?

Truly Choosing a New Future
Are you truly choosing each day? Or are you recreating your past, or possibly someone else's past?
I went to a very large new years day party.* That's right, I said DAY party, not new years EVEN. I didn't even know it existed, so you might not be super surprised that it was my first time to an event like this. The friend I went with had gone many years in the past and having been there before I listened for guidance on what to wear and what to expect. I was told that this would be a burning man related event and that it would be "a lot". That it could be too much so I should be careful.
As the event went on I found there to be a lot of people in a lot of costumes with a lot of loud music, yet, nothing overwhelming for me. I've been well experienced in going to large festivals, big costume parties, and even a kink conference. If there's a chance for me to learn and grow I'll show up.

What amazing year of 2024 it's been with the release of my book on how anyone can adventure in life. We had our biggest retreat yet in Costa Rica over Thanksgiving, and we've touched the lives of over 1000 people this year. Expanding their lives has allowed us to expand to over a million dollars in revenue which supports the amazing team that produces the podcast, coordinates the live and virtual events, keeps all the social media up to day, and provides you with amazing support through the entire process of growing and adventuring.

Am I just dreaming? Yes! A dream is just reality waiting for the right time to become true. When one door close another one opens. You've heard this had you might be calling bullsh!it, but let me ask you this:
Do you actually let the door close? Or do you stick your foot into it to keep it cracked? I know I have and this has turned out to be what's prevented the new door from opening.

The truth is this: Anything of this material world will NEVER. I repeat NEVER provide security, comfort, and predictability. They can only provide the illusion of that.

Ep 73: Finding Enough at SoulPlay Festival
"Erotic Sovereignty", "Ecstatic Aquatic Experience", and "Transformational Titi Massage"
These were just some of the workshops I attended at this year's SoulPlay festival. There were many many more I could have attended and felt I SHOULD attend. Yet I didn't.
What did I do?
I went to sleep an hour before things ended the final night, and I left early the last day without attending any more events.
Why?
Between the workshops, the music, the nature, and the deep human connections I made, I had already experienced what many of us are often struggling to find:
Enough
I felt complete. Nothing more was needed. There was no need to get HAVE IT ALL, I had already gotten all I required. I felt free.

This was an interaction I had during one of my meals here on meditation retreat in Costa Rica. Being in an environment like this is like being back in high school with challenges deciding who to sit with, who to talk to. What are the "better" groups to be in and wondering, will I be liked and accepted by others?
There's one big difference: I've chosen to be here. This choice extends to how I want to feel about any of the high school style antics. I can repeat my old experience of feeling sad or frustrated, or I can choose happiness. I've been choosing the later and I explain how in today's show.

Today I talk about how actively deciding how I wanted my dive experience to go has allowed me to get to 22 dives and over 1000 minutes of dive time in an easy and enjoyable way. I've seen rays, eels, crabs, octopuses, sea horses, and a spectacular night time bio luminescent display known as the string of pearls.

Why won't they get it? You've provided everything and yet they continue their old ways.
Perhaps it's just not their turn yet?
We often think that if we give a seed good soil, water, and sunlight, it's bound to thrive. If it doesn't, then surely it's an error on your part.
That's not always true. Some plants require more to get going. Plants that live in area prone to forest fire often require fire for their seeds to germinate.
If someone around you isn't growing, perhaps the right fire in their life hasn't happened. And it might not be your job to "set the fire". They could just be a beautiful little seed in this life and allow them the dignity to be that beautiful seed as long as they wish.

With their big fluffy tails and infinite energy, what's not to love?

Guided I Love Myself Meditation 35
Today I share a simple yet powerful practice that with just 5 minutes a day can introduce magic into your life: The "I love myself" Meditation. This comes from Kamal Ravikant's "Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It" book.
Why "Love"? It's hardwired since we all experienced at least SOME love as a baby. So the practice simply uncovers what's already there. Here's the practice:
1. Sit or lay in a comfortable meditation position.
2. Instrumental music is optional (no words).
3 On an inhale mentally say "I love myself"
4. On an exhale release anything that needs to be released.
5. Repeat for 5 or more minutes. If you notice you've wandered off, just smiles and say "I love myself" and return to the practice.
That's it! Can you commit to 30 days of this practice?
Whenever you find yourself wondering what to do, ask yourself, "If I truly loved myself, what would I do?" I know that 1 time out of 10 you'll do something different and more loving for yourself and others that you would h…

Move Towards What You Want and Avoid Don't Episode 33
How often have you told yourself, "I don't want this to happen again," and then it happens again?!? Today I go over a simple yet powerful tip that not only helps you get what you want, but more importantly helps you AVOID what you don't want. I use my No Sugar No Grains eating style as an example. It's simple:
Substitute "I don't want Sugar" with "I will avoid sugar".
How about skipping the negative case altogether and just saying, "I want to move towards eating sugar free foods like grilled asparagus."

Today I go over a great tool in changing habits: The Four Perspectives. I go over what they are and how often we are using the wrong perspective to get the result we say we want. The perspectives are:
* "I" - Your perspective
* "You" - Their perspective

Installing New Habits Episode 30
I'm tired of my Quaran-fifteen that I've gained in lock-down so it's time to install a new habit: Eating No Sugar No Grains. That's NSNG from vinnietortorich.com. I've had great success with this way of eating in the past and it's time to get back on the wagon...or in the wagon? Actually, I'll be walking because diet + exercise is a winning combo! So, how to install a new habit? I give you the formula for success:
1. Baseline your current behavior
2. Define your ideal behavior
3. Plan how you will get from your baseline to your ideal in a sustainable way (For me that's 1 week of no sugars, then 1 more week to eliminate grains)
4. Once at your ideal behavior commit to 66 days of the new habit.
If you miss a day, then you have to start over. Robin Sharma, author of The 5am Club, says for all new habits it's hard at first, messy in the middle, and glorious at the end!
