065: STEMming from Latin Roots, with Dr. Angel Martí.
Meet Dr. Angel Martí, the first Latino to chair the Chemistry Department at Rice University, who aims to make the department accessible to all.
Dr. Martí’s was born and raised in Utuado, Puerto Rico, and grew up in a family of farmers. His childhood was marked by curiosity and homegrown experiments, turning every corner into a laboratory, an early sign of his passion for science.
Dr. Martí’s was initially captivated by Math, and participated in the Math Olympics, representing Puerto Rico. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the university of Puerto Rico. When it came time to choose a path, he strategically decided on chemistry, and after stepping in a lab for the first time, he realized that was where he was meant to be.
The road to becoming a professor and a school administrator wasn’t without obstacles. Initially rejected from grad school, he persisted and eventually pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Puerto Rico, despite limited resources.
Mentors played a crucial role, guiding him toward postdoctoral positions and faculty roles, yet, as a Latin professor, Dr. Martí has faced additional challenges. Undeterred, he excelled, and his exceptional contributions led him to become the Chair of Rice University’s Chemistry Department.
Dr. Martí’s shared about the financial support that Rice University offers to undergraduate and graduate students, and we explored what Rice University can—and must—do to improve Latinx representation.

064: Unionized Labor and the Future of Work, with Daniel Villao.
Meet Daniel Villao, a leader in diversity, inclusion and workforce development who strives to create fair and equitable work environments for all.
Daniel Villao is a leader in diversity and inclusion, workforce development, and apprenticeship design. He was born and raised in East LA, and was one of the very few Ecuadorians in a predominantly Mexican and black community, an experience that helped him develop a unique identity and worldview. We discussed his career transition from the military to becoming an electrician and a union member, which helped him find stability after his honorary discharge.
We also talked about Daniel’s decision to invest in his future and pursue a college degree while balancing a full time job and family responsibilities, a decision that changed his life’s trajectory and which led him to become an advocate for workers’ rights and education.
Daniel shared his perspective on the current state and future trends of the workforce in the U.S., the role of unions in creating fair and equitable workplaces, and the challenges and opportunities of implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives in corporate America in a post-Affirmative Action society.

063: From Michoacan to the C-Suite, and the Leadership Lessons in Between; with Arturo Cázares,
Meet Arturo Cázares, a Latino CEO who overcame adversity growing up in the U.S. and who is now leading Latinos in creating the change we need for a more prosperous society.
Arturo Cázares is a successful Latino executive who has worked in some of the most prestigious companies in the world, and is now the CEO of the Latino Business Action Network (LBAN). Arturo shares his story of migrating from Michoacan, his home state in Mexico, and growing up in California, picking crops with his family, and living in a dangerous and poor neighborhood. He talks about how his parents and the people around him embraced their Mexican identity, even when it was not always welcomed in the spaces he and his siblings were entering for the first time.
Arturo also talks about how important education was for him and his family, how it was the main reason why his parents left their home country, and how they saw education as the only avenue to bigger and better opportunities. Arturo reveals how studying at Stanford changed his life, thanks not only to the educational opportunities, but also to the Latino-focused spaces that Stanford had created, which helped him be himself and feel welcomed. He also talks about what he thinks Stanford still needs to do to increase the representation of Latinos on campus.
We discussed the current state of American society, and why he believes it is our responsibility to make it more equitable and just for all. He also gives advice to Latinos who aspire to make it to the C-suite, and how they can balance playing the game of corporate America with staying true to their identity and values.
Arturo also shares his insights on how Latinx can use their social capital to create change for their community, and why he thinks the environment has to change to make it more welcoming to Latinx. He explains why Latinx should not feel deficient, but rather confident and proud of their contributions and potential.

Gustavo Suarez, the founder of Trez.co, a US payroll platform that serves the nearly 35 million Latino workforce in the United States.
Gustavo shares his inspiring journey of migrating from Colombia and opening a small business with no knowledge and no support system. He also reveals how he struggled to get through college while juggling multiple responsibilities, and how finding the right support system helped him overcome the hard times.
Gustavo also tells us how his failed attempt to launch a car accessory business taught him valuable lessons that led him to found his first successful enterprise, JPG, a company that provides tax, advisory, and accounting services to small business owners.He also explains how he learned to balance perseverance and flexibility in pursuing his goals, and how he recognized when he needed to find another way.
Throughout his entrepreneurial career, Gustavo has learned the importance of establishing a nurturing environment for collaboration where everyone can succeed together, and the value of treating people with respect, as we are all human beings on this earth.

060: The “Oilfield Girl”: A Latina Leader Changing the Energy Industry from Within, with Massiel Diez
Meet Massiel Diez a Colombian-Canadian chemical engineer who began her career as a wireline engineer in the Oil & Gas industry, and who is now changing the industry from within.
Massiel is also known as the “Oilfield Girl” by her global online following, she was born in San Andres, a small Caribbean island in Colombia, and migrated to Canada with her mom when she was 4 years old.
Massiel shared her journey of immigrating from Colombia to Canada as a child, and how she knew she needed to become someone to honor her mom’s sacrifices, which is why she pursued a degree in chemical engineering at McGill University.
She also told us how she started her career in the oil industry as a wireline field engineer, and how she sacrificed the early years of her career to set up a foundation for success. This helped her understand pursuing a degree instead of settling for a decent paying job always pays off, because education can open up more opportunities and choices in life.
Massiel also shared her experience relocating with a company twice, first to the US and the to Mexico. She talked about what it is like, the opportunities it provides, and the challenges associated with it. One of them: Struggling to fit in after relocating to Mexico, because even though she has always identified as a Latina, she had not experienced what living is Latin America is like.

Meet Michelle Manzanales, a dancer and choreographer who studied finance but chose to develop a career in Dance despite the financial insecurity associated with artistic careers.
Michelle was born and raised in Houston, TX to a Mexican-american family. She started dancing at age 3, and has not stopped since. Michelle graduate with a degree in finance from the University of Houston, and tried to have a stable career in the field, but she was always a dancer at heart.
After a couple of years in the financial sector, Michelle decided that she was going to pursue a career as a dancer, and although she didn’t become a multimillionaire, she was always financially independent.
Michelle talks about her experience growing up, not feeling proud of her Mexican heritage. It was not until later in life, that she began exploring what being “Ni de aquí, ni de allá” means. Dance has helped Michelle explore that in-between world, and now considers it an asset.

Meet Dr. Mike Vasquez, a former student-athlete at MIT, whose passion for sports led him to develop a career helping companies adopt the revolutionary technology that is Additive Manufacturing (AM).
Dr. Vasquez grew up in Minnesota in a Mexican-american family. He loved playing baseball and dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but when he realized his fastball fell a little short of MLB standards, he focused his attention on his passion for STEM.
One summer, he participated in the MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science (MITES) program, which was his first experience with the university, but not the last, as he continued on to earn his Bachelors and Master’s degrees from MIT, followed by a PhD at Loughborough University, in the UK.

052: Latinx's Role in Protecting Democracy in the U.S. with Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez
Meet Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez, a professor of history who experienced life events that demonstrated the fragility of democracy itself, and who now is committed to protecting it.
Dr. Martinez-Fernandez was born in Cuba and two years later, his family migrated to Miami as a consequence of the Cuban Revolution. They moved to Lima, Peru afterward, only to flee another anti-democratic event, which led them to move to Puerto Rico, where he completed his Bachelors and Master degrees in History.
Years later, he embarked in yet another migration, this time by choice, to North Carolina, to pursue his PhD in History at Duke University, and he has been living in the continental U.S. ever since.
Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez became a historian because he wanted to understand his life story, and this led him to specialize in the History of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Meet Carlos Salcines, a Cuban-American born and raised in McAllen, TX whose Latinidad helps him add a multicultural twist to how movies are being advertised in Hollywood.
Carlos was born and raised in McAllen, TX, which meant he was exposed to the Cuban and Mexican cultures, and experienced the complexity of being a Latino in the U.S. early on in life.
After graduating from high school, Carlos started College at the University of Texas at Austin, convinced that he would become a doctor, but always had a strong interest in movies and television. It was his cousin who had a tremendous influence in the fate of his career, after inviting him to attend the first ever Latin Grammy’s Ceremony in L.A. Once he returned from that trip, and only after reaching a compromise with his Cuban parents, Carlos doubled majored in radio, television and film, as well as advertising.

Meet Dr. Yajaira Sierra Sastre, a Chemist who dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a little girl, and crated the opportunities that landed her a job at NASA.
Dr. Sierra Sastre was born in Puerto Rico, and grew up looking at the night sky and pondering what was out there. She dreamed of becoming an astronaut since she was a kid, and embarked in experiences that enabled her to eventually land a job at NASA.
After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Dr. Sierra Sastre became a teacher, and although her tenure was short-lived, she is a lifelong educator and is highly involved in STEM outreach activities.

Meet Dr. Enrique Lin Shiao, a scientist who has recognized that his immigrant experience, and the uncertainty associated with it, has helped him become a better scientist.
Dr. Lin Shiao was born in Costa Rica to Taiwanese parents, who prepared him and his siblings to continue pursuing better opportunities in places beyond their native country.
He embarked on an immigration journey to pursue academic opportunities, which led him to live in Germany, the U.K, and multiple cities in the U.S. His experiences living in various countries helped him become comfortable with uncertainty, which came in handy when pursuing his PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, because the path to becoming a doctor is full of uncertainties.

045: UWC Day ‘22: Peace Begins with Us, with UWC-USA President Dr. Victoria Mora
Meet Dr. Victoria Mora, president of the United World College-USA, one of the 18 schools in a global movement that makes education a force for peace and a sustainable future.
Dr. Mora is a New Mexican whose passion for education was sparked by her mother and the bargain they stroke for 4-year-old Victoria to look at books while her siblings and her mom took their daily nap. Her family helped her nourish that desire to learn, and supported her so that she could become the first Latina to graduate with a PhD from Yale University.
We talked about Victoria’s journey through higher education, and discussed how the narrative of the “first-generation” can be both inspiring and limiting, and she encourages us to pick and choose which stories we make our own. Meet Pabel Martinez, a former Tech executive whose mission is to redefine professionalism by scaling the representation he wished he had earlier in his career.
Pabel was born in NYC to Dominican parents, and grew up in the projects in the Upper West Side. He was raised by his Abuela who helped him develop a sense of belonging with the Dominican community by teaching him Spanish since he was born.

Francisco grew up in Venezuela, and moved to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He learned English by himself, and always yearned to belong to his new environment.

Meet Taylor Tieman, an attorney and small business owner whose journey to become a lawyer helped her understand the decisions her family had to make to keep them safe.
Taylor grew up in California playing Softball with the goal of pursuing her bachelor’s degree at an Ivy League school. She achieved her goal by graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law.
We talked about what it actually means to be a student-athlete, and the level of commitment it requires. We also discussed how Taylor’s journey to become a lawyer helped her understand why she didn’t grow up speaking Spanish, and the kind of privilege she benefited from as a white-presenting Latina. Taylor also shared her legal advice for small business owners based not only on her experience as a lawyer, but a small business owner herself.
