A Conversation on Reading Genesis Well
In this episode, a repost from a couple of years ago, Damein Schitter, Benjamin Kandt, and Nate Claiborne discuss how to read Genesis well.
As we start a new reading plan at NewCity Orlando, we want to provide conversations from our leaders about reading Scripture well together.
You can start our new reading plan by downloading the Read Scripture App.
For more resources, we would recommend both Reading Genesis Well and Genesis 1-4: A Linguistic, Literary, and Theological Commentary both by C. John Collins. Likewise, Redeeming Science and Interpreting Eden both by Vern Poythress are useful for wrestling with issues related to the early chapters of Genesis.
For reading the book of Genesis as a whole well, we would recommend the commentaries by Derek Kidner and Bruce Waltke. Also helpful are the commentaries by Tremper Longman and John Walton. However, readers may find some of their views on the early chapters at odds with traditional interpretations.

Pharaoh's Hard Heart with Ryan Gawrych
In this episode, Nate talks about the hardening of Pharaoh's heart with Pastoral Resident Ryan Gawrych. Instruments for Renewal with Andy Crouch
In this episode, Nate has the opportunity to have a wide ranging conversation with Andy Crouch. They begin with a distinction from Andy's most recent book, The Life We're Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World. Technology often promises expanded capabilities and reduced burdens, and yet also leads to restricted capabilities and enforced burdens. We find this most often in devices, which are commodities, rather than through instruments, which actually extend and enhance natural human abilities. Nate and Andy lean into their prior training as musicians to think through how instruments can be used for our renewal.

Romans 3-4: A Conversation with Dr. Jonathan Linebaugh
In this episode, Theologian in Residence Dr. Michael Allen takes a deeper look at Romans 3-4 with Dr. Jonathan Linebaugh. Together, they examine the background of Paul's use of Abraham in these chapters of Romans, as well as how it has been interpreted.
Dr Jonathan Linebaugh teaches New Testament at the University of Cambridge, and he’s a visiting lecturer regularly at RTS Orlando. Dr Linebaugh's main academic interest is the interpretation of the New Testament, especially the letters of Paul. This interest works both backwards and forwards, bringing Paul’s writing into conversation both with the literature contemporaneous with it and with the history of interpreting Paul. He has written and edited books related to all those interests. More information can be found here.

A Conversation with Matt LaPine on The Logic of the Body
In this episode, Nate Claiborne sits down with Matthew LaPine, author of The Logic of the Body to discuss some of the chapters of his book. An earlier chapter outlines a view of our emotions called emotional voluntarism, which while common, is not a helpful way of construing our emotional life. LaPine's book does some theological retrieval to bring wisdom from earlier theologians into the present in order to offer a more holistic account of our emotional life as embodied creatures. He then illustrates this with a closer look at Matthew 6 and the command to not be anxious.

In this episode, Nate Claiborne and Benjamin Kandt discuss a Christian approach to the field of psychology. Using the category of common grace, Christians are able to commend what is good, true, and beautiful in a field of study like psychology. Using the category of "antithesis," Christians are able to critique what is evil, false, and ugly in that same field. The error for many is to only do one or the other. Liberalism leans toward only seeing the good, fundamentalism leans toward only seeing the evil. With all this in mind, Ben explains what it would mean to "baptize" secular psychology.

Why is NCSC?

In this episode of How to Read the Bible, Nate Claiborne gives some advice on resources for navigating 2 Corinthians. When making sense of a book of the Bible, it is best to start by reading different translations, then consulting either a study Bible or a Bible commentary. The latter come in different shapes and sizes and depending on how many questions you have, you may need more than 1 commentary on a particular book of the Bible.
A new type of resource mentioned in this episode is a single volume New Testament introduction. These types of resources give overviews of each book of the Old or New Testament (or entire Bible). They are very useful for big picture overviews and general introductory matters. Who is NCSC?
Nate Claiborne and Jonathan Duckett continue a mini-series on the objectives and aims of NewCity's Student Community (NCSC). In this episode, they give some of their background as staff members leading NCSC. Both Nate and Jonathan graduated from Word of Life Bible Institute before completing their undergrad at Liberty University. Nate continued on with his studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he graduated in 2011 with a Master of Theology (Th.M). Duckett is graduating later this month from Reformed Theological Seminary with his Master of Divinity (M.Div) and continue his studies this summer as he starts the MAC Program (Master of Arts in Counseling).
Both Nate and Duckett have an extensive background in teaching and youth ministry and bring these spiritual gifts and talents into the ministry of NewCity Orlando to Middle and High School students.

How to Read the Bible: Song of Songs in History
In this episode, Nate Claiborne talks with Dr. Mike Allen about the history of interpretation of Song of Songs. While our modern impulse might be to reserve Song of Songs for teaching on sex and marriage, most Christians have treated it as primarily about hour relationship with God. Dr. Allen explains why this is the case and traces early Jewish and Christian readings up through the Puritans. He helps us to see how some of the more awkward parts for modern people (e.g. the physical descriptions the lovers have for each other) are actually a way that we can see the gospel in Song of Songs in a way that is not presented elsewhere in Scripture.

In this episode, we discuss Job 13 and Mark 1. In Job 13, we note how important it is to pay attention to the range of emotions Job displays. We also note that his request to make his case before God is granted, but not in the way he anticipated. In Mark 1, we see that a curious choice of verbs ("torn") helps unlock Mark's literary artistry and intentionality in telling the story of Jesus. We also note that symbolism in the New Testament is often unlocked by pay attention to earlier details in the Old Testament.

More advanced readers will benefit from The Feasts of Repentance: From Luke-Acts to Systematic and Pastoral Theology by Michael Ovey. Hebrews | CBR Bible Introduction Project
On Hebrews, Mike recommends the commentaries by John Calvin and Luke Timothy Johnson. He would also recommend Ernst Kasemann’s Wandering People of God and a collection of essays titled Epistle to the Hebrews and Christian Theology.
Nate recommends the volume on Hebrews in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series, as well as the volume by F. F. Bruce in the New International Commentary series. The volume in the NIV Application Commentary series by George Guthrie is helpful for thinking about contemporary relevance. It also worth reading the entry on Hebrews in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized.

For more background details on the book of Judges, listeners should check out the chapter on Judges in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised. The best single volume commentary that is detailed and accessible is probably Barry Webb’s volume in The New International Commentary on the Old Testament series. For a more pastoral, application oriented commentary, listeners should get a copy of Judges: Such a Great Salvation by Dale Ralph Davis (and any other commentary he has written).

Genesis | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For Genesis, we would recommend both Reading Genesis Well and Genesis 1-4: A Linguistic, Literary, and Theological Commentary both by C. John Collins. Likewise, Redeeming Science and Interpreting Eden both by Vern Poythress are useful for wrestling with issues related to the early chapters of Genesis.
For reading the book of Genesis as a whole well, we would recommend the commentaries by Derek Kidner and Bruce Waltke. Also helpful are the commentaries by Tremper Longman and John Walton. However, readers may find some of their views on the early chapters at odds with traditional interpretations.

The Gospel of Mark | CBR Bible Introduction Project
Damein recommend A Theology of Mark by Hans Bayer and Jesus the King by Tim Keller as resources for further study in Mark. Josh recommends the larger volume Four Portraits, One Jesus by Mark Strauss for further study in Mark in relation to the other gospels.
Nate would recommend A Concise Guide to Reading the New Testament by David Nienhuis as a helpful resource on not just Mark, but the rest of the New Testament. Likewise, the single volume commentary by Eckhard Schnabel in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series is a good first purchase for interested readers. More advanced readers will benefit from The Cross from a Distance: Atonement in Mark’s Gospel by Peter Bolt. It is part of the New Studies in Biblical Theology series that we would all recommend.

Joshua | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For setting Joshua into its larger context in the story of Scripture, Josh recommends Dominion and Dynasty: A Theology of the Hebrew Bible. That book is part of a series called New Studies in Biblical Theology that we would all recommend.
The commentary by Richard Hess in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series is an excellent compact resource. It covers exegetical, theological, and even archaeological details well. For a more pastoral, application oriented commentary, Nate would recommend Joshua: No Falling Words by Dale Ralph Davis (and any other commentary he has written).
For interested listeners wrestling with issues surrounding the Israelite conquest of the Canaanites, a pair of books by Paul Copan may prove useful. Is God A Moral Monster is a more broad treatment of issues in the Old Testament, where Did God Really Command Genocide is a more focused treatment on the issues in Joshua.

An accessible commentary for most readers is Vern Poythress’ The Returning King. Also of use is Michael Gorman’s Reading Revelation Responsibly. The entry on Revelation in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized is helpful, as is the commentary in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series by Ian Paul.
If you are particularly interested in digging further into the symbolism and Old Testament imagery of Revelation, G. K. Beale’s Revelation: A Shorter Commentary is a great place to start. More adventurous readers could explore his longer work, or Peter Leithart’s recent volumes in the International Critical Commentary series.

1 Corinthians | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For 1 Corinthians, Mike says that the standard commentary is by Gordon Fee in the New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) series. John Calvin’s commentary is also splendid as is that of Richard Hays in the Interpretation series. Nate would recommend the volume on 1st Corinthians in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series by Thomas Schreiner, as well as Ben Witherington’s A Week in the Life of Corinth for an imaginative take on the background of 1st century Corinth. Other helpful books include D. A. Carson’s The Cross and Christian Ministry, Richard Gaffin’s Resurrection and Redemption, and Alistair May’s The Body Is For the Lord.

1-3 John | CBR Bible Introduction Project
A helpful resource for 1-3 John is the ESV Gospel Transformation Study Bible. It is like a regular study Bible, except that the study notes are focused on understanding and applying the text to our personal lives. And, this resource would be useful for all the books we read in CBR as well.
For 1-3 John specifically, Ben recommends Studies in 1 John by Martyn Lloyd-Jones. The Letters of John by John Stott in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series is an easy to read commentary. That entire commentary series is a good place to start for interested readers.
Another resource for interested readers is A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized. In it, readers will find chapters devoted to more extensive issues related to interpreting books of the Bible. There is a companion volume covering the Old Testament, and both are worth the investment.

Deuteronomy | CBR Bible Introduction Project
Mike says that Patrick Miller’s is by far the best commentary on Deuteronomy, and one of the three or four best commentaries on any book. It is in the series Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching, but is not just for teachers and preachers. Nate would recommend using Daniel Block’s commentary on Deuteronomy in the NIV Application Commentary series as a helpful practical companion during CBR reading.
Mike would also recommend Luther’s lectures on Deuteronomy (volume 9 in Luther’s collected works), as well as Dennis Olson’s Deuteronomy and the Death of Moses and Gary Millar’s Now Choose Life. The latter book is part of a series called New Studies in Biblical Theology that we would highly recommend.

Psalms | CBR Bible Introduction Project
There are many good commentaries to help you study the Psalms. We would recommend John Calvin’s as a classic, as well as the two volume work by Derek Kidner as an accessible resource that everyone can benefit from reading. A newer single volume work by Tremper Longman is beneficial, as is his short book How to Read The Psalms.

You may have heard Benjamin reference Answering God by Eugene Peterson in his sermons. Along with that, he would recommend you check out the classic Treasury of David by Charles Spurgeon, as well as Psalms: Prayerbook of The Bible by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
