What If It Was ILLEGAL to Follow Your Dreams? feat. Moby Hayat
Did You Know? The RATINGS and REVIEWS on a podcast are the most important factor for getting featured on all the popular podcast platforms. Help us reach & impact even more amazing people just like you with your 5-star review @ https://ratethispodcast.com/rebase In the US, the classic picture of "The American Dream" is being able to come into the country and, through hard work & determination & resourcefulness, creating your own slice of success for yourself, your family, and your community. But what if you came into this country, and for almost 10 years you were told that you can't pursue your ideas? Not only that, what if you were told that if you DID pursue your ideas that you would be forced to LEAVE the country? In this episode, you're going to hear a conversation that I know is going to be really eye-opening for a lot of people. It's also a conversation that is really illustrative of all the different options that you may have in your career and in your life. I'd consider Moby Hayat someone who has taught me a lot, somebody who's been a friend over many, many years, somebody who I've been able to look up to, and somebody who's really carved his own path in his career. And if you're familiar with the show, you know we talk a lot about unconventional paths to creating success & fulfillment, and this episode is certainly an example of that. *Episode Links:* * Moby on Instagram https://instagram.com/notthatmoby * Facebook https://facebook.com/notthatmoby * LinkedIn https://linkedin.com/in/moby

This episode is another one of our "Tactical Takeaways" episodes. And in this episode, I'm going to review a previous episode that we released with Katie Sagan, the VP of the people and experienced team over at VaynerMedia, just a few episodes back. As a reminder, this won't be a all-encompassing recap of our conversation, but I am going to go over my Top 3 Takeaways from my conversation with Katie and hearing her story. These takeaways are not just going to be fluff, or something to inspire you... no, they're going to be really tactical things and things that you can actually take action on. Once we actually get to the top #1 takeaway, you're going to get an action item, something tactical, something that you can actually take action on NOW if you want to create this certainty and you want to create the security in your employment. And I have to tell you: it was really difficult to narrow the list of takeaways from my conversation with Katie to just three things. I mean, our conversation was amazing, and there were so many things that we can talk about, but I think you're really gonna like what these 3 takeaways are going to teach you, and how you can take action on them and actually improve the trajectory of your career, while also improving the conditions that you're working in right now.

While VaynerMedia is not the only company with that kind of growth, it is one of the few to do so while still keeping its culture and the company's "soul" in-tact and thriving. We'll dive into how they managed to go through massive growth as a company while maintaining a great culture, as well as how Shirlee's unconventional career path can actually serve as a model and a great example if you feel like you're not exactly on the career path you want to be, or if you're second-guessing the path you've chosen.

Do This to Find Purpose and Meaning
You deserve a job that matters a career that is engaging, fulfilling, doing work that is meaningful. You deserve to do more than just clock in and clock out. Well, what if I told you that meaningful work might be where you least expect it? Over 75% of the global workforce identifies as disengaged, unfulfilled or worse... and more and more people are admitting that they're seeking more than just a paycheck when it comes to their job. Now, this poses a challenge, both to job-seekers who are unequipped to find that extra something they're looking for... as well as requiring a different way of thinking for employers who are used to really only dealing in the very surface level aspects of most jobs. Well, the good news is that finding meaning and purpose is actually possible in any job, as long as we know how and where to look.

Should You Manage People?
Do I truly want to become a manager? What do I need to know before I make my decision? What are the things no one tells you about management before you become one? How can I know whether or not I'll like it? These types of questions come up all the time from people I know who are debating whether to stay "technical" in whatever industry or discipline they're in, or whether to move into a management position. So in this episode, I'm answering some of the key questions that always come up whenever someone is weighing this decision. If you've ever thought about whether or not management is right for you, hopefully this episode will equip you with the information and the guidance you need to make the right decision.

The ONE And ONLY Thing You Need To Be A Leader
I field a lot of questions from people about Leadership. "How will I know when I'm ready for a leadership position?" "What if I don't have a leadership title?" "What if I get the opportunity to lead, but I don't know how to lead?" I think about this idea of "Leadership Readiness" ALL... THE... TIME. And after decades of experience and observation, I've come to a conclusion. Being a leader doesn't come down to titles, readiness, certifications, preparation, pedigree, or any of that. In the end, it comes down to just ONE key factor. And that's what this episode is all about. If you're enjoying the podcast, please let us know by leaving a rating! Best Practices of High-Performing Teams
Is there a more rewarding feeling than knowing you are a part of a team that operates and performs at a high level? For my money, it's one of the absolute best feelings in the world. In this special episode, you're going to get to hear a recording I managed to dig up from a talk I was privileged enough to deliver at Austin Startup Week back in late 2018. In fact, they all apply in some shape or form to ALL teams, which is why I'm so thrilled to share it with you in this episode. *Resources:* Subscribe to my YouTube channel Connect with me on Twitter Follow me on Instagram

Take Control Of Your Job Search
In the US alone, tens of millions of people suddenly find themselves unemployed. And a lot of people on both sides of the recruiting equation are coming to me with questions and complaints, whether they are trying to upgrade their recruiting efforts, or they're trying to figure out how to find a new job. And what you'll find in this episode is maybe not exactly what you'd expect. I'm not planning to give you exactly a list of instructions to follow that are going to guarantee that you're going to do find your next job. Instead, what I'd like to do is just provide some simple advice based on decades of experience. It may challenge the way you think about finding a job, forcing you to look at things a little bit differently. I will, however, also provide you with a few different actions that you can take and advice on how to focus your efforts. These things together will lead you to having a much more pleasant experience, while also finding better job opportunities in less time and wit…

Why Most Meetings Suck
In this episode, we're going to talk a little bit about meetings. Meetings are one of those things that, just by their nature, people think that they're inherently bad... and that if you have too many meetings it means that meetings are useless, and if you could have ZERO meetings then everything would be great. I'm here to tell you that, when it comes down to it, a belief like that is naive and idiotic. If you follow along in this episode, I'll go into the aspects of meetings -- in the execution, the intent, the desired outcomes -- where the REAL problems are that lead to meetings that you find to be boring, ineffective, and useless.

Sometimes that shift is a minor one, and sometimes it's a complete career change. Inevitably, by the time I'm talking with them they've reached a sticking point, or they're in a rut, or they're completely stuck and disenfranchised. And while everyone's situation is unique, I almost always here some version of the same few things. So in this episode, I wanted to get honest, get real, and bring what you might perceive as a little tough love. But I promise, it DOES come from a loving and caring place, even when it's difficult to hear. So tune in to get a little motivation and a little advice on what you NEED to do to make that progress in YOUR career.

Simple Employee Retention Strategies Nobody's Talking About
Employee Turnover has become an epidemic. Every single year, Retention rates drop and Turnover seems to find a way to set a new record high. Companies finally seem to be taking notice, too, and implementing so-called "Employee Retention measures" to reduce the costs and pain associated with high turnover. But are these tactics really effective? One could easily argue that, by the time these companies admit they have a retention problem and finally take action to address the issue, much of the damage has already been done. In this episode, we'll go over a handful of strategies that, when implemented, are pretty much guaranteed to improve Employee Retention and reduce Turnover. These are NOT, however, the kind of half-measures most companies implement, which is why nobody is talking about them.

The REAL Cause of Hiring Pains, Pt II
In this episode, we're keeping the ball rolling on the 10 Biggest REAL Causes of our Hiring Struggles, Pain, and Frustration. In Part I, we reviewed half of these 10 Culprits, and in Part II we're gonna wrap up the list by counting down Numbers 5 through 1. The truth of the matter is that we can blame external factors *all we want*, but these things aren't within the scope of our control or influence. And it doesn't matter one bit how much these external conditions change ... if we're still repeatedly shooting ourselves in the foot, putting ourselves at a major disadvantage, by falling prey to one or more of these 10 things. As we finish off this list, you may start to see the relationships between these culprits ... and how tackling one or more of these Pains can actually reduce or completely eliminate the effects of another that is also currently prevalent in your organization.

The REAL Cause of Hiring Pains, Part I
The Rebase Podcast is back after far too long a hiatus, and we're getting things going again in style with a 2-Part series on what really causes all the pain & frustration Employers feel around Recruiting the right people. All too often, when I speak with Companies about Hiring, the natural assumption is that the culprits responsible for their struggles are external factors. Here's the reality, though: Every company is playing the same game, with the same rules, and basically the same goals. Sure, some companies have more resources, others have brand recognition, and still others have zero sense of urgency around when they hire someone. Conditions between two companies will always differ, but to blame "the market" or other external factors borders on victim mentality. In this Part I episode, you'll discover half of the 10 biggest things Employers do (or don't do) that have absolutely nothing to do with the outside world. *Links:* Don't Overcomplicate Hiring: Grab Your Seat to the…

Larry Hawkins II - How to Live With Purpose
I’m very excited to share this episode with you, where I have the pleasure and privilege of interviewing Larry Hawkins II, CEO of Hawkins Development Group and author of 5 PRINCIPLES TO A PURPOSEFUL LIFE: How to Move With Purpose and Start Making a Difference. Larry’s life passion is developing other people. He finds true fulfillment in helping people discover things about themselves that allow them to do more than they thought possible. This is the foundation on which Hawkins Development Group was formed. I got to meet Larry at a networking happy hour a few months ago, and after talking to him for just a few minutes it was clear we were kindred spirits. Our parallel career paths, beginning in Engineering and then finding a calling and purpose in developing others, and our passion for developing great people in great organizations has made this one of my favorite podcast episodes ever. I guarantee you'll be moved by Larry's story and his perspectives on work and life.

The Agile Manifesto: Principles for ANY Profession
In 2000, a group of seventeen thought leaders in software development came together to discuss the headaches felt by the industry. While there were a lot of differing opinions, they all knew one thing: What everyone already had wasn't working. They were able to work through their disagreements and align on certain principles and values. The product of that collaboration is known as The Agile Manifesto, which we'll review in this episode. In it, you'll begin to see how the four values and twelve principles of agile software delivery could be applied to your own career and workplace, even if you work in a low-tech industry or consider yourself a luddite.
