Liberal helpings of Cal Thomas
If you,like me, are a fan of The Last Word with Matt Cooper on Today FM, then you will probably be very familiar with my special guest on this episode, the ever-fascinating Cal Thomas.
Cal, along with journalist Marion McKeown, has a weekly slot on Matt’s show, where they debate the big stories and issues happening in the US – Marion generally leans liberally, Cal leans conservatively, and them sometimes they meet somewhere in the middle. It is always a great listen.
Marion was a guest on this podcast a few months ago, so this week its Cal’s turn. He’s one of America’s best known and ‘longest-serving’ journalists – a former Fox news host, his columns are syndicated all over the US print media, and he has penned several best-selling books. He’s eloquent, intelligent, and he always has an opinion.

Richard Boyd Barrett – Rebel with a cause
If there’s such a thing as a ‘celebrity’ politician then Richard Boyd Barrett would surely make the cut. A very familiar face and voice on TV and radio, Richard is eloquent and outspoken, goes against the grain when it comes to the Dail dress code, and he’s mates with one of the world’s top supermodels Bella Hadid. Well, he doesn’t actually know her, but she does follow him on Instagram and has been sharing a few of his posts recently. More on that, and loads more, in the interview. Check it out.

And they’re off! Its Nina Carberry
She’s fresh off the Dancing with the Stars dance floor, winner’s trophy in hand, and she has also just been unveiled as the new coach on Irish Fittest family - Nina Carberry is a seriously busy lady right now. So I was both surprised and delighted when she accepted our invitation to join me for a chat on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast.
Nina has had a stellar career as a jockey, and it is very much in her DNA having been born into a famous racing family and then marrying into another! We talk all about her deep love of horses and the sport, her experience on DWTS, her competitive and extremely hard-working nature, and tonnes more!

Muireann O’Connell is an incredibly sharp, witty, and well-read person who always has something interesting to say and a great story to tell, and that’s why she makes for the perfect Mario Rosenstock podcast guest. We used to work together in Today FM before Muireann took up a full time role in Virgin Media, and she currently presents Ireland AM with Tommy Bowe and Alan Hughes.

REPOST: Ronan O'Gara answers my call
In case you missed it... this is a fascinating insight into the mind of ROG - his mindset, his ambitions, and what makes him cry. First released in March 2021 - but with the week thats in it, a very interesting listen-back.
ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES
Midway through my interview with ROG there was a pitch invasion. Not the kind either he and I are used to – the kind where a bunch of kids storm the room and demand that I start to do impressions of their father. It was the best kind of interruption to any interview I’ve ever done, have a listen.
Pitch invasions aside, ROG did NOT hold back in this chat. From his home in France, he’s unimpressed with how the Irish authorities are approaching lockdowns; he pulled me up on a few of my impressions and my thoughts his Rugby career; and he was incredibly open about how much the mood in the La Rochelle camp needs to improve.
But he also shared some touching stories about how he cried watching Rachel Blackmore’s post-win Cheltenham interview; his deep, unwavering love of Cork; and, most importantly, how he well I’m ageing. So basically I’m a seriously HOT 50-yr old (my words not his).
Also, in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, we’re bringing you some brand new comedy. I ask David McWilliams to solve the world!

Back of the net! with Tony Cascarino
Mick McCarthy was just one of the ‘callers’ who phoned in to chat with this week’s special guest, the great Tony Cascarino. As well as a call from his former gaffer, Tony heard from Roy Keane, Boris Johnson, Steve Staunton, Robbie Keane, and a few more besides – because everyone loves chatting this man. Niall Boylan talks Joe Duffy, opinion radio, and surviving life
You might remember a time in the 1990s on Irish radio, when the ‘phone-in show’ was everywhere. Lots of radio stations, particularly in Dublin, had a late night talk show where callers phoned in and ‘expressed their opinions’ about hot topics, to put it mildly! One of the most talented broadcasters behind that genre of radio is my special guest on this episode – Niall Boylan. Niall was at the forefront of late night talk radio back then, but he has also been central to that format's evolution and success right up to today. He is the host of The Niall Boylan Show and Late Nite Live on Classic Hits Radio and he has seen the format change and evolve to reflect the change in Ireland’s society, social norms, and diversity. Indeed he has been a driver of that evolution. Niall has had the most eventful life you can imagine, so we had so much to chat about - I think you're really going to enjoy this one.

Paddy Cullivan – Conspiracy theories, Comedy and Michael Collins
As well as being the front man of the Camembert Quartet (Late Late Show house band), Paddy Cullivan is an ‘historical entertainer’. What is that, you might ask? Well, he cleverly brings together all of the things he loves - history, music, comedy and the visual arts – and combines them into stage shows where he takes big historical stories and makes them accessible and entertaining, while also challenging the ‘accepted narratives’ of these pieces of history.
His latest show focuses on the murder of Michael Collins at Beal na Blath – if you’re an Irish history buff you’re going to love (or hate!) hearing all about that, but we also get deep into other fascinating areas like conspiracy theories, 9/11, JFK’s assassination, and why, as someone who knows so much about history, he is a deeply cynical about how the Ukraine War is being handled politically. Constantin Gurdgiev – from Russia to Ireland, to the USA
My special guest is a man you will probably have seen and heard many times on Ireland’s biggest TV and radio shows – but not for a few years now. Constantin Gurdgiev was one of a group of what you might call ‘celebrity economists’ who became the new rock n roll stars during the recession – Constantin is Russian, very slick, very intelligent and I used to portray him as a kind of bond villain on Today FM’s Gift Grub and on Vincent Browne’s show on TV3.

Hearing out Eddie Hobbs
There was a time, not so long ago, when Eddie Hobbs was everywhere - on every radio show and in every newspaper, presenting his own hugely popular TV shows, and a few best-selling books too. He was even a regular character on Today FM’s Gift Grub!
But, for various reasons that we talk about in this interview, Eddie started to spend less time in the media and more time running his own business and also writing and tweeting about some of the big economic and political issues facing us. And yes, we also talk about some of the well-publicised business failures that Eddie has been involved in over the last few years. This is an interview that packs a lot of punch.

Two Norries / One Mario
Its time to pay a visit to the deep south…North Cork! James Leonard and Timmy Long are known as ‘The Two Norries’ (a Norrie is someone from the north side of Cork City) – and they are two of the most interesting people I’ve had on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast since the series began.
They had a difficult upbringing which led to drug, alcohol and other addictions and they both spent time in prison. During their time inside and since their subsequent release they have turned their lives around, focused on education and helping others, and now present the hugely popular Two Norries podcast (The number 1 podcast in prisons around Ireland!!)

Hello Hello Hello Tom Dunne!
Tom Dunne enjoyed great success as the front man of Something Happens. The band had a string of hit singles in the charts, including Parachute and hello hello hello, and they played to packed houses all over the world. But there came a point, as there does with many great bands, where they decided, for various reasons, to stop recording albums and touring the world. Since then, Tom has become a hugely popular broadcaster on Today FM and, more recently, Newstalk, and he’s also a dab hand at writing – he has so many stories to tell!

Mark O’Halloran: Cinema Success; Property Failure
Mark O’Halloran is a big deal in the Arts world. He wrote and starred in the award-winning film, Adam and Paul; he wrote Garage, the film starring Pat Shortt which debuted at the Cannes film festival; he wrote the hit TV series Prosperity, and he is currently writing the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s ‘Conversations with Friends’.
Mark has worked many times with the great film director Lenny Abrahamson, he is an acclaimed stage actor, and it is fair to say that in the arts and creative world, he would be called a huge success. BUT would you believe that for all of this hard work and achievement and success in one world, Mark is a total failure (by his own admission) in another world – the world of property ownership. Like so many others, Mark cannot get approved for a mortgage and is facing a lifetime of insecure renting. Bressie hates mortgage adverts on TV. Having been approved for, and then denied, a mortgage, he knows how unrealistic they are. That a man so industrious and successful would find it really hard to secure a loan from the bank to buy a home says a lot about the state of things right now.
So, Bressie shared his story about the mortgage, and we got in to areas that you might expect, like mindfulness and podcasting, but also some areas that you might not expect, like the psychology of colonialism, our shared love of dolly parton, and why I should get some therapy!!

Jim Sheridan - Behind the Scenes
He once held a gun to Daniel Day Lewis’ head, spent time ‘f”*king up’ Richard Harris on the set of The Field, and he can’t understand why everyone was so afraid of Harvey Weinstein. In his latest project, Murder at the Cottage, Jim sets out to try to make sense of what really happened in the case of Sophie Toscan du Plantier who was murdered at her holiday cottage in Schull, West Cork in 1996. After lots of twiddling of knobs and flicking of faders, myself and Ray D'Arcy finally got chatting. But that little bit of technical checking that you will hear at the very start of this episode is a mark of the man in many ways. Al Foran not only does great impressions, he does great impressions of people that many other impressionists don’t do – lots of well-known American celebrities, black actors and comedians like Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy (something that he has come in for perhaps unfair criticism for, and we talk about this in the interview), and he’s particularly good at doing boxers. I am, and always have been, a great admirer of Eamon Dunphy. Never afraid to hold a firm, controversial position, but never afraid to change that opinion either. And often the second position is the polar opposite of the first one! In a world where people appear afraid to be seen to change their minds about things, this makes a refreshing change and is part of why Dunphy is so popular

It’s both fascinating and encouraging to see how talented people can shoot to fame almost overnight these days. I first met Michael Fry a couple of years ago as he was starting to make a name for himself, posting funny parodies and songs on his growing social media channels, under the handle @BigDirtyFry. Michael was working hard and his unique style of comedy was slowly gaining traction. And then, suddenly, the rocket took off.

Ronan O’Gara answers my call
Midway through my interview with ROG there was a pitch invasion. Not the kind either he and I are used to – the kind where a bunch of kids storm the room and demand that I start to do impressions of their father. It was the best kind of interruption to any interview I’ve ever done, have a listen.
