Hamish Douglass: On the Hunt for Super-Compounding Stocks
Our guest this week is Hamish Douglass. He is the co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Magellan Financial Group, a roughly $80 billion asset-management firm with headquarters in Sydney. Among his duties, Douglass is lead manager of the Magellan Global Equity strategy, which is a concentrated portfolio of high-quality growth stocks. That strategy has been very successful since its July 2007 inception, handily beating its benchmark, the MSCI World Index, with significantly less risk. Before forming Magellan in 2006, Douglass was co-head of global banking for Deutsche Bank in Australia and New Zealand. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of New South Wales. ReSolve Riffs with Eric Balchunas: Crypto, Active ETFs, ARK Insanity, and the Beta Vortex
This is “ReSolve’s Riffs” – live on YouTube every Friday afternoon to debate the most relevant investment topics of the day. Almost three decades since the very first launch, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have grown to a multi-trillion-dollar segment of the market, with more than seven thousand spread across the world. The US market is home to approximately 30 percent of them, spanning the passive/index-tracking, actively managed and thematic categories, not to mention a handful of more exoteric niches. We drew on the expertise of our friend Eric Balchunas (Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg) for an update on the current state of the ETF. We discussed: * The hottest tickets in town – the ARK family and Cathie Wood * Soap opera drama – why haven’t crypto ETFs been allowed yet * Why thematic ETFs are actually a closet-momentum play * Value as the most intuitive factor – emulating Graham’s ‘Intelligent investor’ * The Beta Vortex, how passive distorts price discovery * Biases and the narrowing gap between institutional and retail investors * The answer to 99 out of 100 questions in markets – blame it on the Fed Eric also gave us the breakdown in AUM for each segment of the market, as well as his estimate for the current size of the entire passive investment complex. This was a wide-ranging and very entertaining conversation, with great input from the audience (especially from our friends Brian Portnoy and Dave Nadig – thanks guys), and we also learned there is such a thing as “conversational alpha”. Thank you for watching and listening. See you next week.

Value Investor's Edge Live #32: Surging Containership Rates - MPC Containers Update
Constantin Baack, CEO of MPC Containers (OTCPK:MPZZF), a leading small-sized containership lessor, joined J Mintzmyer's Value Investor's Edge Live on 9 February 2021 to discuss this segment of the surging containership markets. MPCC is one of our current top picks at Value Investor's Edge, and is significantly benefiting from surging rates. Although it's not currently listed in the US markets, there's sufficient trading liquidity on the Oslo Exchange ("MPCC") and they are considering a potential US-listing if market conditions remain favorable throughout the year. For more particular information on MPC Containers, I highly recommend reviewing their latest earnings presentation, which was published on 25 February. Their full Q4-20 financial report is also linked. For readers and listeners primarily interested in US-listed names, the primary comps include: Atlas Corp. (ATCO), Capital Product Partners (CPLP), Costamare (CMRE), Euroseas (ESEA), Global Ship Lease (GSL), Navios Maritime Containers (NMCI), Navios Maritime Partners (NMM), and SFL Corp. (SFL). The content from this interview should be relevant for investors in all of these names. Topics Covered (<1:00): Intro/Disclosures (1:00): What is driving the recent strength in smaller containerships? (4:30): Strategy for the charterbook? Durations vs. rate levels? (7:20): Discount level of one-year vs. two-year charters? (8:30): Structure of the MPCC pool with 15 ships? Plans for charter cover? (9:45): Any plans for a US-listing? Is the IPO market available? (11:45): Dividend plans and potential policy structure? (14:30): Capital allocation priorities into mid-2021? Asset purchases? (16:45): Are accretive asset purchase opportunities still available? (19:45): Any differentiation of interest within smaller-sized ships? (22:15): Merger and consolidation opportunities in this sector? (25:00): What is the typical ROE for recent acquisitions? Unlevered? (27:50): Some of the latest fixture examples? (28:45): How long can the current charter strength last? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

ARK Enters The Bear Cave w/ Edwin Dorsey
The Value Hive Podcast is brought to you by TIKR. Join the free beta today at TIKR.com/hive. They're constantly releasing new updates that make the platform better including a new Business Owner Mode that hides share count, market cap, and enterprise value. I couldn't be more excited to partner with TIKR. This week I chat with Edwin Dorsey, founder, and author of The Bear Cave. The Bear Cave is a short-focused newsletter dedicated to finding interesting companies doing sketchy things. Edwin began his obsession with the stock market in the second grade. As we discuss in the podcast, Edwin was born to be a short seller.  Our chat covers a few key topics around short-selling, including:  * What Makes A Great Short Idea (Hint: it's not "astronomical valuation") * The Importance of Shorting in Capital Markets * ETF Mechanics & The Impact of Front-Running Redemptions The bulk of the podcast focuses on the current ARK ETF dynamics and the potential of a severe redemption event. Edwin does a fantastic job describing the inner mechanics of ETFs and why the same "rails" that drove ARK up the AUM ladder could bring them down in the blink of an eye.  Here's the timestamp:  * [1:20] Is A Short Seller Born or Made?  * [4:10] What Makes A Great Short Idea?  * [8:00] Root Insurance $ROOT * [17:05] Interning at SEC Enforcement Division * [20:23] ARK Enters The Bear Cave * [35:12] What Makes 2021 Different Than The 2020 Flash Crash?  * [44:57] Vuzix Corp $VUZI * [58:04] Future of Bear Cave Newsletter * [61:00] Closing Questions If you like what you heard and you want to learn more about Edwin, check out these resources:  * Bear Cave Newsletter * Edwin Dorsey Twitter

Academic Research Spotlight: Replicating Anomalies by Lu Zhang, Chen Xue and Kewei Hou
In this episode, we are trying something new. There is so much academic research out there about markets, and what drives their returns over time, that it can be very difficult for investors to keep up with all of it. So we are going to start highlighting some of our favorite academic papers each month and breaking down their key lessons.  We start with paper Replicating Anomalies by Lu Zhang, Chen Xue and Kewei Hou. In this paper, the authors examined 452 stock market anomalies to see how they held up once the impact of micro-cap stocks was reduced. We summarize the findings from the paper and what they mean for investors.  We hope you enjoy the discussion.  DIRECT LINK TO REPLICATING ANOMALIES PAPER Replicating Anomalies by Kewei Hou, Chen Xue, Lu Zhang :: SSRN ABOUT THE PODCAST Excess Returns is an investing podcast hosted by Jack Forehand (@practicalquant) and Justin Carbonneau (@jjcarbonneau), partners at Validea.
