Fresh Soup 065: Øhm Sweet Øhm presents Talcum Soul
Play • 58 min

It is the turn of the 1970s in a grey, working class Greater Manchester town, and Brian has left behind his tough job in manual labour for a night on the tiles. He arrives at Wigan Pier with a few quid and his talcum powder. This is not a euphemism for drugs. Dusting himself with talc, Brian takes to the dancefloor with wild athleticism; popping and flipping to rarer than rare Motown cuts, oft forgotten about by even the artists themselves, but revered by trainspotting DJs in the north west of England.

Known as 'stompers', Brian and his friends on the scene provide an unforgettable face to a sound that transfixed ravers in the north; Northern Soul a movement that transcended the fast-paced soul that soundtracked it. Øhm Sweet Øhm's latest venture to the recesses of his record collection sees him laying down the foundations of a night of soul, revelry and bodies contorted into incredible shapes. For one night only, get your ears around the arresting sound of Talcum Soul.
