Kevin Van Lagen - Revive a School, Save a Community
This episode brings you a breakout session from the CAP-uLead conference in 2022 with Kevin Van Lagen.
In 2014, enrollment in Altario School was at an all-time low. The future of both the school and community was in question. Today, Altario School is vibrant hub of rural education. By Reimagining rural education, this community school has created a student led farm that not only teaches all things agriculture, it also has increased enrollment in the school, has grown the community and inspired other rural schools to embrace their rural identity.

Eileen Pollack - uLead Introduction
Welcome to the next edition of our introductions to featured speakers at uLead 2023. For more information on uLead, please visit the website.
Eileen Pollack was one of the first two women to graduate from Yale University with a BS in physics; she later earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She is the author of five Novels as well as two collections of short fiction. One of her novels, Breaking and Entering, was named a New York Times Editor’s Choice selection. Eileen’s work of creative nonfiction Woman Walking Ahead: In Search of Catherine Weldon and Sitting Bull was recently made into a movie starring Jessica Chastain and Michael Greyeyes.
Her investigative memoir The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science Is Still a Boys’ Club was published by Beacon Press in 2015; a long excerpt appeared in the New York Times Sunday Magazine and went viral, after which she spent five years working to advance the opportunities for women and people of colour in STEM fields.
Her work has been selected for Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, and Best American Travel Writing. Eileen’s latest book, an essay collection titled Maybe It’s Me: On Being the Wrong Kind of Woman, was published in January 2022 by Delphinium Books and received starred reviews in both Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews. A former director of the MFA Program at the University of Michigan, she is now a professor emerita and lives and writes in Boston.

Phil Boyte - The Importance of Culture
Phil Boyte is a Culture Coach, as well as a Professional Development and Culture Summit Facilitator. Phil helps educational leaders to create schools that are so fun, encouraging, and safe they have to beg students and teachers to leave at the end of the day. Stéphane Grenier - Mental Health in Schools
When it comes to mental health, Stéphane Grenier walks the talk.
He was appointed to the Order of Canada and awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Guelph and Humber College for his contributions to the field of workplace mental health.
Stéphane’s riveting keynotes are not only thought-provoking, but also lead to tangible action and sustainable change for those leaders who are prepared to rethink how they support their people.
His autobiography, After the War: Surviving PTSD and Changing Mental Health Culture, tells his story from the day he landed in the midst of the Rwandan genocide, through his journey of changing mental health culture in the Canadian military, developing national Guidelines for Peer Support with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, all the way to creating Mental Health Innovations (MHI); a consultancy that leads innovative and sustainable change in organizations to enhance the mental health of their people.
Today, he and his business partners, along with countless associates, develop non-clinical mental health interventions as a complement to traditional clinical care for private and public sector organizations, as well as for provincial healthcare systems.

The Importance of Play with Dr. Pasi Sahlberg

Dr. Lynora Saxinger - Tips for a Safer Return to School

Dr. Saxinger is an infectious diseases physician and associate professor of medicine and microbiology and immunology at the University of Alberta. We know that like in other parts of the country and the world, schools in Alberta are engaged in remote learning. Teachers and Leaders have had to adapt fast to this new changing environment.
We asked one simple question to leaders, “What are the ways you are supporting teachers during the pandemic?”. We think their answers are enlightening and may help you navigate this difficult environment.

Rebecca Hare - Learning Space Design
In this episode we feature a session from uLead 2019 about Learning Space Design with Rebecca Hare.
After a decade in Italy as a design consultant and creative director, Rebecca became fascinated with education. The young designers she hired, she found, struggled with problem-solving and critical thinking. She returned to the U.S. to study education and built on her BFA in Industrial Design. Her Master's thesis focused on Design Thinking and evaluating and enhancing creativity through the study of design and art. Now, Rebecca is an art and design teacher with Clayton Public Schools in St. Louis. She's also a learning space designer and co-author of the book: The Space: A Guide for Educators. She has worked with a number of schools to collaboratively design learning spaces and experiences that enhance student learning, agency and making thinking visible.

Dr. Simon Breakspear - Teaching Sprints
