How Should Christians Navigate Political Disagreements among Friends? (Jonathan Leeman)
46 min
Jonathan Leeman discusses how Christians should think about political disagreements within the church. He makes the important distinction between clear, biblical principles on the one hand and prudential applications of those principles on the other, shares his take on how much pastors and church leaders should say regarding their own political perspectives online and in-person, and offers advice for those worried about political controversy causing division within their church.

Jonathan Leeman is a co-author of How Can I Love Church Members with Different Politics?

Newbell covers being racially profiled as well as many false stereotypes and the exhaustion that black women face as they navigate others’ expectations and perceptions. Newbell shares that the painful or awkward moments in the world also exist in the church, yet there is hope that springs out of lament, having faith in a good God. Why or why not? * Can you imagine the cumulative weight of the expectations, stereotypes, perceptions, and awkward or painful interactions over time? If yes, what does it feel like? The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self
A recent article in _New York Magazine_ included this bombshell, "Roughly 30% of American women under 25 identify as LGBT. For women over 60, that figure is less than 5%." Now, I can't find anyone who believes this number can really be that high. To acknowledge such a dramatic shift in such a short period of time would be nothing short of a world changing revolution. But, we know about rapid onset gender dysphoria among adolescents and teens. We've seen the prevalence of social contagion in our Instagram age. So, is such a revolution in human sexuality so unthinkable? This revolution may be sudden if it's actually happening, but it's no more dramatic than what we've seen unfold in the west in the last 60 years. Historian, Carl Trueman covers that ground in his new book, _The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution,_ published by Crossway. But, he locates the sexual revolution within a broader change in views of the self and identity. Trueman joins me in this special extended episode of Gospelbound, to help church leaders understand what's happening. I've heard Carl say that apologetics used to be about explaining the church to the world, but now it's more about explaining the world to the church. That's what he does in _The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self_, which is my pick for the most important book published in 2020. I'm eager to learn more about this road to revolution, and also pose some of our listeners' questions on this subject. This episode of Gospelbound is sponsored by Crossway, publisher of _The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution_ by Carl Trueman.

My Church Is Dividing Over Covid-19
Episode 583 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com 1. I have a cousin and aunt and they said that the Catholic church was started by Jesus through the apostles, and I said that that was the catholic “universal,” but they disagreed and said that church was the Roman Catholic church. So why do Catholics believe that they are the only true church and how can I answer this claim from the scriptures? 2. What does it mean to be a child of God? Are all people children of God including non-believers? Or Is it our relationship with Jesus, the son of the Living God, that determines this? Thank you and I listen every day! 3. I’m in a small group that seems to be growing more divided recently. I am in the susceptible demographic for the Coronavirus because of my age. Our small group used to Zoom but now have moved to in-person meetings, but the hosts of our small group seem put out by having to have precautions in place for me and another member who is a diabetic. At our last study, a good portion of our time had segued into allegations surrounding the election. I have quoted from Romans and 1 Peter to respect our authorities but since there is a divide between federal and state authorities, which one should be followed? How can these divisions be worked out? We are quite entrenched in our views about the virus it seems. I feel compelled to leave the group seeing how divisive things are getting. I want to just go back to studying God’s word but I can’t ignore that it has its application to our current divide. 4. RT Selects: C. I. Scofield: Deity Of Christ
RT Selects: C.I. Scofield is a controversial and famous preacher who lived in the 1800s. His life story starts out very rough as a confederate soldier, a corrupt lawyer, and an alcoholic who destroys his own private practice and his family. His story changes completely when a friend tells him about Christ. His sermon, "The Deity Of Christ," comes across as one part apologetic work and another part invitation to meet the same history changing Christ that Scofield met. It is a passionate defense of the person of Christ, whom our faith rests on. Special thanks to Jonathan Clauson. Jonathan Clauson started with Clear Channel Radio in the '90s. Jonathan has worked in audio and marketing for 20 years. Credits include stints at EA Tiburon, Christianity Today, Christ and Pop Culture, and freelancing as voice talent for audio-books and podcast production services.
