Memorabilia
What would you do with a cool £7m? Buy a luxury yacht? A penthouse suite? Maybe invest in your favourite football team? Or would you buy Diego Maradonaâs 1986 World Cup kit?
The shirt went up for auction this week and became the most expensive sports memorabilia item ever, selling for £7.1m.
The shirt is of course best remembered for the Hand of God goal and the incredible goal where he dribbled through the England team, inspiring Argentina to go on to lift the trophy.
So today we want to talk about some of the items *we* might pay for; special items to us as football fans, and weâd love to hear from you too.

The Football Pitch
A football pitch. Just a patch of grass where 22 players run around and kick a ball for a little bit, right? Well, maybe in the old-days. Maybe still at amateur level. But get anywhere near professional football, and that patch of grass becomes incredibly important and incredibly scientific.
It can literally be the difference between a free-flowing attacking game of football and one where the ball gets stuck in midfield or just kicked long all day.

Christian Eriksen
At 5:19pm, Christian Eriksen was the first Danish player to step out onto the pitch at Parken. His team-mates waited a few seconds in the tunnel to let him have the stage to himself. The stadium in Copenhagen was about to be filled â kids with printed photos of Eriksen on sticks and shirts with his name and number 10 on the back ever-present in the stands.
He clapped towards the fans and they returned the salute, welcoming him back to the national stadium for a friendly against Serbia. Everyone knew what had happened 290 days before at one side of that same pitch during Denmarkâs opening match at the European Championship against Finland on June 12.
On the day before the Serbia match, Eriksen had revisited the scene of his collapse for the first time for his national teamâs final training session. The warm-up session had been placed in exactly the area where Eriksen had suffered his collapse. When returning to the spot, he just started clapping spontaneously.
That was it. He had confronted his past.

Money and football are more connected than ever. And with that, human rights records and business dealings of Premier League club owners coming under increased scrutiny. But unless theyâve got an oligarch or state fund to pump money, itâs hard for clubs to keep up with the relentless rise of Premier League playersâ wages and transfer fees.
That money needs to come from somewhere, and broadcast revenue and ticket sales no longer cover the costs of players who, in the past, would have been more easily within reach.

Handball is a common-sense thing.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min wrote their names into the record books two weeks ago, after combining to devastating effect once again in Tottenham Hotspur's' 4-0 win at Leeds United.

When EA Sports introduced a brand new video game series called FIFA International Soccer in 1993, they released a 30 second promotion ad and crossed their fingers people would buy it.

Free Kicks

Making Football Competitive
There are still four months remaining in most European domestic leagues, but the big titles are largely already decided.
Itâs a situation weâve become accustomed to: the rich clubs wrapping up the league by the turn of the year, allowing them to concentrate on what really matters to them, the Champions League. Winning the title, the fundamental point of holding a national league system, is barely a story, and tense run-ins are largely a thing of the past.
If you believe the betting exchanges, PSG are 95 per cent likely to win Ligue 1, Bayern Munich are 95 per cent likely to win the Bundesliga, Manchester City are 88 per cent likely to win the Premier League, Real Madrid are 87 per cent likely to win La Liga and Inter are about 77 per cent likely to win Serie A.

They hunt in packs, often fuelled by alcohol, cocaine and other drugs. Though some are old enough to be fathers and even grandfathers, they're hooked on violence and confrontation, and the well out-of-date idea that by fighting with opposition fans, they're showing support for their club.

Chants
If you ever need proof that football is not an entertainment business, you only have to consider one thing: chants.
In an entertainment business, the people respond to the quality of what they have paid to see. Gigs, plays, comedy shows, films, exhibitions, immersive theatre, whatever: if itâs good, people will like it and react accordingly. If itâs bad, likewise.
Football isnât like that, because when crowds are allowed into football grounds, they will respond, among other ways, by chanting and singing regardless of how good the game is. They will scream and shout and curse and express their displeasure, but fans will always sing and chant.
Every club has chants. From the smallest non-League team to the European champions: they might not be unique, they might not be clever, they might not be particularly tuneful, but everyone sings. Itâs one of the things that binds everyone together.

Sir Alex Ferguson
This month marked 35 years since Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed as Manchester United manager, on the 6th of November 1986.

LGBTQ in Football
Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo has come out as gay, becoming the only current top-flight male professional footballer in the world to do so.
The 21-year-old wrote on social media that he was "ready to speak about something personal that I'm finally comfortable to talk about in my life".
"I'm a footballer and I'm gay," the midfielder said in an accompanying video.
"All I want to do is play football and be treated equally."

Japan 2-1 Australia
An Australian own-goal kept Japan in the race for an automatic spot in next year's World Cup.
Australia defender Aziz Behich put the ball into his own net in the 85th minute Tuesday to give Japan a 2-1 victory and six points from four matches in Group B, three points behind the Aussies and six behind Saudi Arabia.
Goalkeeper Mat Ryan tipped a shot from Takuma Asano and the ball bounced off the post and then ricocheted off Behich and into the net, ending Australia's run of 11 consecutive wins in World Cup qualifying games.
"We kept fighting until the end and never gave up," Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said. "We showed our determination to get to the World Cup."

For something that seems so simple, there's actually a lot to penalties. There's of course a penalty in a match and there are penalty shootouts. There's the relationship of the player vs the goalkeeper. The psychology of the goal, the match result, the tournament. There's the crowd watching in the stadium and on TV. A penalty might last only a minute from when the referee awards the foul, but SO MUCH happens in that time.

Safe Standing
Fans will be allowed to stand at Premier League and Championship stadiums for the first time in more than 25 years as part of a pilot programme that begins on January 1.
The Sports Ground Safety Authority is to invite expressions of interest from clubs in the two leagues to have pilots of safe standing this season.
Clubs must apply to be part of the âearly adopterâ programme by October 6.
If approved, clubs will be able to operate a safe standing area from New Year's Day until the end of the season.
The introduction of designated safe standing areas in stadiums will see an end to the blanket ban on standing in the top two divisions of English football.

Euro 2020 â or is it Euro 2021? â finally kicks off next weekend, and itâs set to be a cracker. 24 countries, playing across 11 host cities in 51 matches, will compete for the ultimate prize - to be the champions of Europe.
This yearâs tournament is one of the more complicated. The first to be played across the whole continent, with reduced crowds and extended squads, plus other changes to account for COVID 19. The Special One
Jose Mourinho has been appointed Roma manager from the start of next season. The 58-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the three-time Serie A champions.
"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season," said Mourinho.
Mourinho was recently dismissed after 17 months in charge of Spurs following a poor second half of the season in which the north London club slipped from the top of the table to outside the European places.

The extravagant buildup did not seem to match the occasion. Juventus was at home to Genoa, a standard Serie A game. What mattered, though, was not what Juventus was playing for, but what the team was playing in.
Juventus played in a special edition jersey, designed in collaboration with its apparel partner, Adidas, and Palace, a British skate and streetwear brand. The jersey was greeted as a masterpiece, but Juventus would never wear it again. It did not matter. Later that week, the Palace jersey was made available. It sold out in 12 hours.

Nine different players got on the scoresheet as Japan thrashed Mongolia 14-0 in a World Cup 2022 qualifier. Mongolia, who are ranked No. 190 in the world, registered just two shots compared to Japan's 34.

Inside the Dressing Room

What goes on between players and managers behind closed doors is often speculated on. There are endless rumours of fights, arguments and practical jokes, but the reality is rarely discussed.
Matt Jarvis, previously of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, missed the camaraderie during his recent spell without a club. "I don't think there's anything like it in any other industry," he says.
"It's so unique. You've got so much going on. You've got so many different characters. Different nationalities. Different hobbies. You've got different ages. You can have people as young as 17, 18, who are just coming into the first team. You've got 35-year-olds at the end of their careers. It's just such a mishmash of everything."

Chinatsu Kira
Chinatsu Kira is a professional footballer, currently playing for Melbourne City in the Australian W-League. Originally from Oita, Japan, Chinatsu spent around 10 years playing for Urawa Reds before moving to Australia in late 2020.
Having made her national debut against New Zealand in 2014, she has represented her country 12 times, scoring 5 goals in that time. Most notably, she played at the U17 World Cup in 2008, and was part of the team which won the Asian Cup in 2014.

Language of Football
Football is a universal language. Or is it? There is undoubtedly a common understanding between players as soon as they cross the white line onto the pitch; often you donât need words to be able to play well as a team.
But it does help. With the professional game never more eclectic than it is now, where, for example, over 60% of players playing in the Premier League are foreign, having players who share a language can be crucial for team morale, tactics, coach instructions, and dealing with the media.
But the language of football has evolved to be so much more than just that of the words used on the pitch. Where every moment is broadcast and analysed all over the world, journalists battle with overused cliches, finding new ways to describe the same thing and word counts.

Every week, in just about every country in the world, millions of footballers take the pitch playing the game they love. 22 players put their heart and soul into the match, to try and walk away with victory. No matter the age, the level, the country or the match result, thereâs always one thing you can guarantee: the referee will be a talking point.
Referees are so crucial to football. Competitive matches literally cannot happen without them. Yet, every single week, they are the biggest talking point in the game. The deal with abuse from players and fans during the game, and endless scrutiny afterwards, whether they make a mistake or not.
Weâre all guilty of it; a football fan who says theyâve never criticised a referee is a liar. But how do you become a referee? Perhaps more importantly, WHY would you become one?

Shimizu S Pulse announced their new slogan for season 2021 and the reaction on social media has been fierce to say the least.
The club explained the meaning behind the slogan on their website: âno matter how big the wall is, supporters and the club will work together to break it down.â
The official definition of the word âPENETRATEâ is âto go through somethingâ, however, the word is often used as sexual innuendo. Iâm sure you can guess what that means!
As such, reaction from English-speaking J.League fans on Twitter was rough, with some going as far as to say they should rip it up and start again.

Brexit & the Premier League
With Britain leaving the European Union, there are new laws as of January 1 - and that means new regulations in this month's transfer window, which could have previously restricted the signings of Paul Pogba, Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin among others.
Premier League clubs are to be limited to three U21 signings each transfer window with all foreign players subjected to a point-based threshold to be eligible to play in the UK.
Players from European Union countries will not be allowed to be signed without a work permit while foreign players under the age of 18 cannot be bought at all as part of post-Brexit regulations, meaning Premier League clubs will have to wait to secure the services of top young talent from abroad.

2020 In Review
2020 was a strange year for us all. The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc and death all over the world and unfortunately it doesnât look like ending anytime soon.
However, in the middle of it, Tommy and Tomo met on Twitter and this podcast was born. Weâve never met in person and are podcast amateurs, but somehow the podcast has gone very well and each week we find more and more listeners. Thank you to everyone for listening!

This weekendâs North London derby is intriguing as ever. Spurs, at home, going to the match in 1st place, unbeaten in the league since the opening day and with a forward line that most teams would dream of.
On the contrary, Arsenal have been extremely poor lately. They've only won one match in their last 5 in the league, scoring just 2 goals in that period. Whilst their Europa League form has been impressive, their last 3 matches in the Premier League have been a 3-0 loss at home to Aston Villa, a 0-0 draw away to Leeds and 2-1 loss at home to Wolves.

Masa Sugiyama
Masahiro Sugiyama was born in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. In 2005, he graduated from London Metropolitan University and landed an internship at the Asian Football Confederation.
After that, he became coach and manager at the Japanese Soccer Club (LJJ FC) in London, before returning to the Asian Football Confederation in 2011.
Masa is now the head of grassroots development in the Technical department of the AFC, and received a PhD in Sport Management from the University of Malaysia last year.
He has lived abroad for 16 years. He has spent 1 year in Australia, 6 years in England and now 9 years in Malaysia, where he currently lives.

Concussion
In 2016, a US appeals court upheld a $1bn (£700m) settlement between the NFL and a group of retired players who had suffered brain damage as a result of concussions.
Since then, says NFL chief medical officer Dr Allen Sills, the organisation has instilled a "very aggressive programme to try and reduce those injuries".
In fact, Sills says, the league was able to "reduce concussions by 29%" last year.
NFL protocols mean each player gets the same exam whenever they are evaluated for a head injury - anyone deemed to have suffered a concussion cannot return to the field.
The tests, carried out in a pitch-side tent, include a set of simple questions about the game, the location or the player's team, while medics assess the player's eye movement, speech and behaviour.
Now, the Premier League and other leagues around the world are looking at what they can learn from the NFL.

Football Gives Back
More than a million people have signed Marcus Rashford's petition calling for children from poor families in England to get free meals in school holidays.
The Manchester United and England forward wants the government to provide free lunches amid fears for incomes as coronavirus restrictions increase.
His Parliamentary petition says that "no child should be going hungry".
Last week, British politicians rejected an extension of the provision of free school meals, saying they has already introduced more effective measures to support families.

Football Betting
Premier League clubs should not be allowed to have betting firms on their shirts, a government report has recommended. This season, half of Premier League clubs and 17 of 24 Championship clubs are sponsored by bookmakers.
The Chair of the report said "most people who gamble, enjoy it safely. However, gambling related-harm has made the lives of two million people miserable. It leads to hundreds of people each year taking their own lives, leaving families and friends devastated."
The report also recommends that there should be no gambling advertising in or near any sports grounds or sports venues, including sports TV programs but restrictions should not take effect for clubs below the Premier League before 2023. The English Football League (EFL) says the gambling sector contributes £40m a season to the league and its clubs and with the financial problems of the coronavirus pandemic, this "significant" contribution is "as important now as it has ever been".
