Dr. Calvin Sun, founder and CEO of The Monsoon Diaries, joins Dear Asian Americans to talk about his new book, appropriately titled The Monsoon Diaries. Dr. Sun shares about the origins of The Monsoon Diaries blog, what led to the book, and how it uses Covid-19 as a backdrop to tell an overarching story of how one derives resilience from something they already have, rather than acquiring it externally. Listen in as Jerry and Dr. Sun also discuss navigating the Asian American family dynamic, the importance of self-advocacy, the effects of the pandemic on healthcare workers, and the two most important bets of his life: the one that took him to Egypt and the one that took him to medical school.
Meet Dr. Sun
My name is Calvin Sun and I was born and raised in NYC. I currently work as a board-certified Physician specializing in Emergency Medicine, as well as a public speaker, activist, and soon-to-be published author based in NYC. I also regularly lead group trips around the world to places I have never been and on a monthly basis ever since I was a student 12 years ago through my travel-blog-turned international community called "The Monsoon Diaries."
