Play episode · 1 hr 1 min

This week, we take a slightly different approach and open the episode with the epic tale of our hectic start to "Techtember". We present a detailed re-telling of Marques' bumpy trip to Arizona for a video shoot with David Blaine and the adversity that followed. From editing mishaps to clandestine overnight shipping strategies, we had to work through quite a bit of craziness to film and upload our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 unboxing video. So grab a comfortable seat and enjoy a special "Waveform Story Time"!

Creating and Solving Their Own Problems
Daniel and Hayato welcome special guest Raymond Wong of Input for an in-depth conversation about iPhone 12 and his direct comparison to the Google Pixel camera system. There's also a segment about OnePlus. The underdog has historically placed customers and value first, but some of their decisions have made us wonder if they are losing their way. Foldable phones partially serve as a new product category. Rectangular slabs will still be around for quite awhile, but they are making mobile devices a lot more interesting. And they're definitely starting to justify their existence. Deepfakes: Harmless Fun or Danger to Our Privacy?
This week, Jordan and Joshua explore the light and dark sides of the deepfakes phenomena, synthesizing audio and video to replace the likeness of one person with another. Jordan and Joshua speak with Paul Shales AKA The Fakening about how he's built a career on swapping voices and faces of celebrities, and how the burgeoning technology is only getting better and harder to detect. On the other side, Dr. Hany Farid of UC Berkely and Mary Anne Franks, professor and founder of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative discuss how this deep learning technology could have dire consequences in the wrong hands. Writer Samantha Cole of VICE recounts her discussions with proprietors of deep fake pornography and how revenge porn is exploiting women without their consent or knowledge. Plus, target of revenge porn and former congresswoman Katie Hill discusses her fight to make the creators of this content more accountable and how we need to get a handle on this technology before it's too late. So are deepfakes harmless fun and expressions of our free speech or will they be the end of legitimacy on the internet as we know it? Acer's new Snapdragon Chromebook and better Android app support
This week on The Chrome Cast, we’re diving into the new ARM-powered Chromebook that Acer just unveiled this week (the Chromebook Spin 513) that just so happens to be running on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Compute platform. Though this device is still clearly a work in progress, the inclusion of Snapdragon chips in the Chrome OS story is notable as more high-end ARM chips are slated for 2021 from MediaTek as well. It should make for a very interesting fight. Beyond the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, we spend a bit of time talking through the recent upgrades to the experience of PUBG Mobile on the humble Lenovo Chromebook Duet and why it matters that a huge game developer has clearly taken a shine to Chromebooks for once. As more developers realize the nascent potential of the Chrome OS user base, we really feel like Android apps on Chromebooks have only scratched the surface thus far.
