Thom Brennaman -Taking Ownership of Ignorance
On this episode, we have Thom Brennaman a long-time sportscaster who fell into a massive controversy in 2020 when a hot mic caught him saying a slur. This hot mic moment lead to his dismissal as a Cincinnati Reds sportscaster and his resignation from Fox Sports. Since then Thom has met and worked with various LGBT+ organizations and individuals to le arn from his mistakes and grow as a person.
Thom has been working to amend his wrongs and get back into what he knows best Sportscasting. You can currently find Thom broadcasting on Chatterbox Sports broadcasting High School sports in Cincinnati and on his new show “Off the Bench with Thom Brennaman presented by UDF” which streams live daily on Chatterbox Sports Youtube.
We know this episode may be viewed as controversial by some, but we believe everyone deserves a chance at redemption. People make mistakes and learn from those mistakes and we believe that Thom has worked to better himself and those affected by his words since that moment.

Ryan Russell - My Grey Matters
Ryan Russell a businessman, husband, and dad of three received a strong diagnosis after months of headaches. The pain he was feeling was not headaches or migraines instead it was brain cancer. He opened up and detailed the phases of his fight. ''It was clear that the hill I needed to climb was larger than I imagined. Not a hill at all. More like Mt. Everest'', ''When you are faced with a challenge there are only two options. You can turn away and hide, or you go headfirst into the storm'' Ryan said. Ryan shared some rules that have been critical for him and, also shared about the website where he's sharing more about his story, tips, and resources.

#69: Bill Curry -The Miracle of Team
Legendary player and coach Bill Curry played for Vince Lombardi and Don Shula, he also played with Bart Starr and Johnny Unitis. In 1965 Bill Curry entered his first NFL huddle with the Green Bay Packers. This was also the first time he had an African American teammate in the same huddle while segregation was at an all time high, and it changed his life forever. In 1972 a little boy was born and immediately put up for adoption. This week’s guest might have the most dramatic and heartwarming story we or anyone else has ever had the pleasure of sharing. Our guest, Deland McCullough was adopted and raised in Youngstown, OH.
Football wasn’t just a thing to Deland, it was the thing that allowed him to escape all hardships he was facing.
In true underdog fashion, Deland wasn’t the star athlete from the beginning. He worked hard and had passion. Heck, he even enrolled in the Navy because he wanted out of Youngstown so badly. His break came when he was recruited by Miami University, more specifically, Sherman Smith (remember that name, it will hold great importance later).

Growing up in a trailer park in Cincinnati, OH, he joined the US Navy after graduation and served as a Master-At-Arms before starting his career as a comedian. He speaks openly about his family affairs and the many struggles he has had to overcome throughout his life.
Gary was named “Funniest Serviceman in America” after only one year of doing stand-up and won a contest to be named “Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego.”
He has made appearances in several films, had a show on BET, The Gary Owen Show, and released several comedy specials namely his latest #DoinWhatIDo released in 2019.

#40: Chuck Martin – Miami University Head Football Coach
Our guest this week is head football coach, Chuck Martin.
With the odds stacked against him, Coach Martin left a success team at Norte Dame to take over an 0-12 Miami University program in 2014.
Coach speaks to his decision informing host, Kyle Decker and Calvin Blackmon (both former Miami Redhawks football alum) that there is a fine line between courageousness and foolishness. Although financially he took a hit, three things that went into his decision:
* Miami’s tradition – the Cradle of Coaches & the opportunity to turn around one of proudest programs in the country

* His family – Oxford really suited his family

#39: Megan Duffy - Marquette Women’s Basketball Coach
Our guest this week is Megan Duffy head coach for Marquette University women’s basketball team.
She reminisces about high school days with our host, Calvin (they both attended Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton, OH).
Her love for the game started young. Her high school coach put her in situations regularly where she wouldn’t always be able to find success allowing her to grow her leadership skills and develop her grit.
Her senior year her team was number one in the nation and she tore her ACL. This devastating injury opened her eyes to the mental side of the game.
She ultimately went on to play college ball at Notre Dame and continued to work hard at not only her skill but her leadership.

Our guest this week, Chris Herren has been sober since August 1, 2008.
He had his first drink at the age of 12 and was addicted to drugs by the age of 18.
Growing up Chris’s desire to fit in lead him to the partying scene in high school which he recalls as just, “doing what all the other kids were doing” or so he thought. Surprisingly, through the drinking and the drugs, his natural athleticism and his fear of failure are what pushed him to make a career of basketball. He worked hard to made it to the NBA, he had a wife and kids and almost lost it all.

Our guest this week is 25-year Austin Hatch who will undoubtedly stop you in your tracks and encourage you to be grateful for everything you have.
He survived not just one plane crash, but two. Tragedy struck during both crashes ultimately resulting in every single member of his family dying. It is a true miracle that he was able to survive.

Casey was 13 years young when he was first diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, osteosarcoma.
After kicking cancers ass for the fourth time, Casey joined the University of Minnesota’s football team as a walk-on placeholder. He fulfilled his dream by holding for an extra point during their 2019 season.
Casey will continue to be at risk and face additional surgeries as a result of his treatment, but he leans heavily on his faith to get him through any adversity and has won our hearts!

#32: Jerry Schemmel - Plane Crash Survivor & Sportscaster
This week’s guest, Jerry Schemmel is a famed broadcaster, author, cyclist and motivational speaker who has had a brilliant career. He had his underdog moment and beat the odds early in his life by surviving a plane crash.
After an engine blew, his flight went down killing 112 people. Leaning on his faith in God, he was able to overcome his survivors’ guilt from that terrible day in 1989.
He continued to push himself to new limits cycling 3,000 miles in seven days and 14 hours winning the two-person relay division. To say he understands how to overcome adversity would be an understatement.

#30: Adam Chaney - From Broken Back to Nationals
Our guest this week is 17-year-old, Adam Chaney. Adam is a World Junior Record Holder and top 5 national recruits. He has swum in places like Budapest and Fiji and holds several state, national, and world junior titles allowing him to become an Olympic trials qualifier.
After swimming an entire summer through a broken back, the injury worsened forcing him to sit out three whole months.
But that didn’t stop him. Post-injury, he went on to win two state titles and competed in the Junior Pan Pacific Championship earning a silver and bronze medal. Adam has committed to the University of Florida in the fall, He is a levelheaded young man and we can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next!

This week’s guest not only has a powerful story but sheds some light on the pandemic that is COVID-19 & how our essential works can stay safe.
For Dr. Jessica Evans, 2015 was a pivotal year. She finished her residency and was actively studying for boards. She had trouble getting pregnant, found out her husband cheated on her, and had several deaths in the family. As if that isn’t enough both of her parents were diagnosed with cancer and mom almost died from chemo.
She only worked & slept. After she and her husband separated, she did all she could to find balance again but staying busy with work wasn’t enough. She started counseling and decided she needed something to look forward to.
She created “The Year of the Bucket List.” She added 12 things to her bucket list, some big some small, but it was just what she needed to pull herself out of her funk. She is now happily re-married and focused on helping others.

#23: Uriah Steffen - Trading in the Bottle for a Bike
Our guest this week, Uriah Steffen had his left leg amputated below the knee as a result of a car/bike accident in 2012.
But that’s not where his story started. In 2008 he failed out of two different colleges & was arrested for his first DUI.
In 2009 he landed his dream job after completing an auto tech program in Pennsylvania but was arrested again for his second DUI.
He continued to struggle with his addiction through 2012 facing homelessness, eviction & ultimately losing his job!
Although he married the love of his life in July 2012 in Los Vegas, the addiction already had a vise-grip on him.
On August 19, 2012 he made the choice to be sober. He started biking to work & began to truly enjoy this new source of endorphins.
On October 15, 2012 he was hit while biking to work. The accident had an estimated 80-85 mile per hour impact.
Since that accident he has taken on a new perspective in life. He is now a proud husband, father, & triathlete.

This week we have Jeremy Ganger AKA Pitbull, not the singer, but the professional wrestler who saved 100’s of lives in the Dayton, OH shooting. Jeremy wrestled for 12 years in a Dayton based WAR Wrestling, Rockstar Pro Wrestling and Heartland Wrestling Association, but that’s probably not what you will find on a Google search today. August 4th was a tragic night for the city of Dayton, OH. Jeremy was working as a bouncer at the infamous bar, Ned Peppers on that night. He shares with us the dramatic events leading up to the shooter being apprehended & even opens about his struggle with PTSD as a result of this event.

A retired Marine Corporal, Josh Sams shares his catastrophic story of how he lost both his lower legs and the last two digits on his right hand during a tour in Afghanistan.
He walks us through the moment the IED exploded sharing his initial thought, and the hardships of his recovery process. The doctors informed his loved ones he would probably never walk again, but miraculously after 3 dozen surgeries and 5 intense months in the ICU, and many more months of rehab and recovery he was able to defy medical expectations and walk using his prosthetics. You too will be inspired by his story and ability to never give up.
He officially retired from the Marines in 2015 and completed a promise he made to himself by enrolling back in college. He earned his Criminal Justice degree and is currently working for the Sheriff’s department.

Have you ever played the lottery? Our guest, Tom Crabtree not only played the lottery, but won! Growing up he had his sights set on playing in the NFL. Crabtree played college football at Miami University before becoming an undrafted tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs.
He didn’t meet instant success. Although he made it through training camp with the Chief’s they cut him because they didn’t believe he was ready to take the field game one. They then resigned him to the practice squad where he continues to work his ass off until week three when they cut him permanently.
Then he is sitting with his family for a Thanksgiving meal when he gets a call from the Green Bay Packers where he & his teammates achieved the ultimate reward by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
