502. Life Lessons From Beating Cancer w/ Matt Kibbe
In this week's flagship Lions of Liberty podcast, Marc is joined by Free the People's Matt Kibbe, who details his battle with cancer nearly twenty years ago, and how it completely changed his perspective on life. This something Matt hasn't discussed extensively and I really hope listeners can gain some new perspectives from his experience. Along the way, we get into libertarian messaging, how we can use personal stories and life experiences to persuade people to see things from a different perspective, and why we need to let go of the idea of "convincing" others that we are right. Check out today's sponsors! The Independent Riot with Jim Duncan! Listen to Marc's recent appearance on the program here! If you're ready to take your libertarian beliefs and actually live them out, be sure to check out The Expat Money Show with Mikkel Thorup! And come join the conversation about the expat lifestyle, offshore investing and more on Facebook in the Expat Money Forum! You could have seen today's episode live as it happened if only you had joined the Lions of Liberty Pride on Patreon! Learning From The Greats. Sal the Agorist, Pete Quinones, & Keith Knight
https://youtu.be/Ouxr-qnrRWM One of the most important facts about human nature is the great diversity among individuals. Of course, there are certain broad characteristics, physical and mental, which are common to all human beings. But more than any other species, individual men are distinct and separate individuals. Not only is each fingerprint unique, each personality is unique as well. Each person is unique in his tastes, interests, abilities, and chosen activities. Animal activities, routine and guided by instinct, tend to be uniform and alike.  But human individuals, despite similarities in ends and values, despite mutual influences, tend to express the unique imprint of the individual’s own personality. Th e development of individual variety tends to be both the cause and the effect of the progress of civilization. As civilization progresses, there is more opportunity for the development of a person’s reasoning and tastes in a growing variety of fields. And from such opportunities come the advancement of knowledge and progress which in turn add to the society’s civilization.   Murray N. 2/26/21 Ryan McMaken on the Apocalyptic Threat of Nuclear Weapons
Scott talks to Ryan McMaken about nuclear proliferation. McMaken describes two lessons that other countries have learned from the U.S. about nukes: (1) America will use the threat of an emerging nuclear program as an excuse for invasion, as it did in Iraq and threatens to do in Iran, and (2) America has so far been unwilling to make serious threats against any nuclear-armed country. Although the first trend seems like it would be an obstacle for any country wishing to protect itself from the threat of war with the U.S., North Korea provides a recent example of a country that chose to pursue a deterrent nuclear program. But although it greatly lessens the possibility of war, this isn’t necessarily a good thing. A nuclear-armed world may make us safer in some immediate respects, but overall, only greatly increases the possibility of disastrous global conflict. Discussed on the show: “”Weapons of Mass Destruction”: The Last Refuge of the Global Interventionist” (Mises Institute) Ryan McMaken is a senior editor at the Mises Institute. He has degrees in economics and political science from the University of Colorado, and was the economist for the Colorado Division of Housing from 2009 to 2014. He is the author of Commie Cowboys: The Bourgeoisie and the Nation-State in the Western Genre.
