Effective communication between parents and their children is crucial for building healthy relationships and promoting positive development. However, fostering good communication is not always easy, and many parents struggle to connect with their children in meaningful ways.
In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Jan Bayliss, a child consultant who works with Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners to mediate with parents who are experiencing separation and divorce, and also qualified as a supervisor of counsellors. Jan has authored two children's books: ‘The Good/Bad Feelings Diary’ and ‘My Very Own Good/Bad Feelings Diary Workbook’.
Jan emphasizes that communication between parents and children should not be one-sided, and children should always be given a voice. It is important to listen to a child's perspective and validate their feelings. They also discuss the importance of parents tuning in to their child's behavior and noticing any changes in them.
