Fully Booked EP30: Getting Satisfaction by Following Your Own Path
Play • 46 min

Most people measure self-publishing success by number of copies sold, or total profit earned. That makes sense, especially if you write for a living or to support your family. It also explains why so much of the conventional advice given to new authors is geared towards those goals, such as studying your genre, writing to market, or using cover designs that will be familiar to your readers. It's a safer path to success, while still allowing you to eventually build up a fanbase that can act as a safety net later in your career, allowing you to then try out some of your riskier ideas.

Some authors, however, choose to take that riskier path right from the start – whether by accident or by choice. Terrance Layhew falls into the latter category. With a regular job that both pays his bills and provides ample writing time, Terrance recognized that he had the opportunity to take chances and do things differently right from his very first book. It’s not that he doesn’t dream of selling loads of copies or seeing his name at the top of the charts, but his livelihood doesn’t depend on it. And to some, being able to forge your own path without compromise can be just as satisfying as becoming an overnight bestseller is to others.
