The last one of the season with Kate Steele. From serving on the Food Counter to Global Communications Director of Microsoft.
So here we are at the end of my very first season and what a guest to finish on!
Kate & I went to school and guides together. My life as a guide was pretty short lived after the guide camp weekend we talk about which was something of a cross between SAS Who Dares Wins and some weird Bear Grylls experiment.
After leaving our comprehensive school in Pudsey, I went onto a YTS scheme.....(remember them?) and Kate went off to the University of Cambridge. We've pretty much not seen each other since and reconnected on social media years later.
At school, she was clever (obvs) but she was also rather creative and had this uncanny knack of persuading the school to allow her to put on her own (rather risqué) productions. So her super successful career in PR and Communications (she is currently Global Communications Director for Microsoft) was a surprise to me as I imagined she would one day become the female Noel Coward or some such. Lisa is an old (as in long time...) friend, fierce feminist and all round talented person. She's been involved in writing many of the UK's most popular shows of the last 20 years including Fat Friends with James Corden, Emmerdale, Waterloo Road, Ackley Bridge, New Tricks, Midsomer Murders and Call the Midwife amongst others. As Chair of the Writers Guild, she is also passionate about supporting fellow writers.
Because this isn't enough to keep her busy...(!) she is also Chair of the Royal Television Society in Yorkshire and over the last 5 years has run the Yorkshire RTS Awards. In fact she is a recipient of an RTS Award herself.
She's also a regular contributor to BBC Radio Leeds, has appeared on BBC Radio 4 and has been on the judging panel for BAFTA. The One with Jen Silvester-Killen. Midlife Career Change, Marriage and a Homophobic Dad.
When Jen offered to be a guest on my podcast, it was to talk about the huge decision she made to give up her life-long Teaching career in midlife. I was happy for her to share this but the story I was most interested in was the one about having a father who held strong homophobic views. So strong was his homophobia that for years, Jen felt she had to live a double life until in midlife, her and Fiona decided to marry. Jen had to face the fact the she could no longer keep her sexuality a secret.....
