Dissecting the gilt crisis fallout
Just over a year has passed since the gilt market turmoil of September 2022, sparked by the UK government’s so-called ‘mini-budget’. The fallout from the crisis, as the pound fell and gilt yields spiked, prompted an emergency intervention by the Bank of England to restore orderly market conditions against a global backdrop of high inflation and rising interest rates. A significant change in asset class demand dynamics ensued as pension funds sought to meet collateral calls for their LDI mandates.
Since then, yields on longer-dated bonds have risen significantly despite short rate pricing expectations coming down, while concerns over the volume of government bond supply have begun to permeate financial markets. Miles Tym, Fund Manager – Public Fixed Income at M&G Investments, discusses how the fixed income landscape has shifted in the last 18 months and whether the factors that contributed to the crisis are still in place.

The state of play in European private credit
Risk assets have repriced over the past year due to financial-market volatility and higher-than-usual levels of uncertainty surrounding issues such as terminal rates, inflation, geopolitics and economic growth. Consequently, we believe private credit currently offers unusually high potential returns while retaining its traditional defensive characteristics of low duration and security.
However, selecting a manager who has experienced periods of higher default rates, who implements conservative underwriting standards, and who can perform rigorous credit analysis is key, in our view. #MandGInsti

An Introduction to Significant Risk Transfer
The Significant Risk Transfer (SRT) market currently offers a compelling alternative to traditional asset classes given high levels of inflation, according to James King, Head of Structured Credit at M&G Investments. SRT transactions involve a high element of risk but coupons that have the potential to range up to the high teens provide significant compensation, whilst the floating-rate nature of the asset class has typically delivered increased levels of income as interest rates adjust higher. Buy-and-hold investors are taking advantage and could enjoy these attractive returns for the next 5 to 8 years as the market continues to expand rapidly, offering a broader range of investment opportunities, in our view. This is a time-sensitive opportunity as building an SRT portfolio will become more difficult should risk appetite normalise over the next 6 months or so.
Ultimately, SRTs are issued as credit instruments, with returns derived from the underlying loan pool. Therefore, the risks of losses on these loans are the primary concern of investors. However, investors can seek to mitigate these risks by focussing on diversified pools with lower individual borrower concentrations; partnering with large banks that have lending track records that pre-date the global financial crisis; and meticulously stress testing portfolios to facilitate a high probability of withstanding prolonged periods of economic weakness.

Catering to subtleties across the housing spectrum
Housing needs are defined by age profiles and can be split into five categories. The needs will often be driven by the activities that are likely to be pursued by that cohort, as well as cultural values. For example, we installed larger-than-usual freezer storage space in our student accommodation in Bologna, Italy, given that students will often arrive at university with a year’s worth of frozen food!
