Let's Normalize Disability Stories
Michael Wing has been a strong advocate for people with disabilities and those with mental illness for many years. One thing that he noticed in media is that people with disabilities and those with mental illness are generally left out of the conversation. Michael wants to change that. He wants to share the stories of people in the disability and mental health community. He wants to show society the good, the bad, and the in between, through the lens of disability and mental health. These stories will be real, but told through scripted YouTube videos.

BONUS Episode: Love & Disability
Born with the rare genetic disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka ‘brittle bone disease’), and a wheelchair user since the age of six, Athena grew up navigating an ill-fitting narrative about being disabled in our society.
On one end of the spectrum is the highly medicalized representation of the disabled body that typically focuses on pain, deformity and lack of function. Frida Kahlo’s surrealist self-portraits depicting the painful and distorting aspects of her body and her disability are an example of how this interpretation of disability has shown up in the world of art.
On the other end of the spectrum is the objectification of people with disabilities as “super crips” that are held up as inspirational for simply living with their disability. This viewpoint has become even more prevalent with the rise of social media and is articulately critiqued in Stella Young’s TED talk, “I’m Not Your Inspiration, Thank You Very Much”.

Let's Bring Disability to the Forefront
Aleem Jaffer is a public speaker and model with Kello Inclusive, and one of the stars of the new docu-series PUSH on CBC and CBC Gem. PUSH is an unscripted series that takes audiences into the inner world of the “Wheelie Peeps,” an unlikely group of friends and wheelchair users, bonded by their shared experience of navigating life on wheel. The show currently airs on Fridays on CBC and online on CBC Gem.
Career wise, Aleem is a Job Developer where he helps people with barriers to find meaningful employment and earned a Bachelor of Management in Human Resources and Labour Relations from the University of Lethbridge - graduating with Distinction and a Business Administration Finance Diploma from NAIT. Aleem brings valuable insights on the subject of diversity, being from a minority background, and having Cerebral Palsy- Aleem uses a wheelchair and crutches.
Additionally, Aleem has served on the Accessibility Advisory Committee with the City of Edmonton and continues to serve on other committees addressing and advising on disability related issues. Through his work, Aleem aims to educate, create opportunity, and “normalize” disability!

It's Okay To Need Help
Michelle Bissell came onto the Board of Directors of the Voice of Albertans with Disabilities in October 2014 and now is the Education Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Certificate in Career Development from Concordia University Collage of Alberta. She participates with an occupational therapy class at the University of Alberta, as Student Educator. She was the Chair of the DATS Advisory Group (DAG) for five years and has taken part in Housing Accessibility Series and Radical Inclusion 2020 though the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human rights and was involved in writing a shadow report for the U.N. and now is a facilitator for Radical Inclusion 2022. Dr. Alan Martino (he/him) is an Assistant Professor in the Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies program in the Department of Community Health Sciences (Cumming School of Medicine) at the University of Calgary. His main research interests are in critical disability studies, gender and sexualities; feminist and critical disability studies theories; qualitative and community-based research (particularly participatory and inclusive research methodologies). The Disability & Sexuality Lab works with communities to advance research and advocacy efforts at the intersection of disability and sexuality.

Pedesting
Nabeel is the Chief Executive Officer of Pedesting and a Co-founder in the Pedesting Corporation. In 2017 the Senate recognized Nabeel for his contributions by awarding him The Senate 150th Anniversary Medal for his generosity, dedication and volunteerism in his hometown and community; in 2019 Nabeel was inducted by Avenue Magazine into the Calgary 40 Under 40 club for his accomplishments in his professional life as a proud Calgarian.
Erin is the Chief Creative Officer of the Pedesting Corporation and is Co-Founder in the company, along with his business partner Nabeel Ramji. His passion for accessibility derives from his vocation as an architect and his years-long friendship with Nabeel who has used a wheelchair his entire life.
Erin received his architecture degree from the University of Oregon and apprenticed in New York City with world-renowned architect Aldo Rossi for four years. He has more than 30 years’ experience as an architect, working on projects spanning three continents. Erin spent a dozen years immersing himself in the study of urbanism but it was not until he crossed paths with Nabeel that he realized architecture, for some people, can be a confounding barrier.
With Nabeel, Erin has created an approach to understanding the built environment that has the power to give all pedestrians a clear understanding of the urban landscape and how to navigate safely and quickly through the many man-made barriers. To Erin, the Pedesting app has the potential to help everyone partake in everything that our society has to offer: on the sidewalks, in the parks, at the universities and in the shops.

It's My Disability, I Can Laugh If I Want To
Sean Towgood is the Creator, Writer, Co-Executive Producer and Star of You’re My Hero, coming out on March 24, 2023 on CBC Gem. Sean is also an actor whose credits include Doctor Barnardo's Children and The Last Green Hill for 4th Line Theatre. He played a leading role in 4th Line's premiere production of Wounded Soldiers and later toured Ontario with the play. He wrote and performed his short solo piece, My Life on the Short Bus, for the Soulo Festival in Toronto. In his spare time he has done play by play for Humber Sports, and some stand up comedy. Sean is the recipient of a silver Emerge Media Award for the radio documentary, Stigma.

Advocacy, Ableism, and A New Generation of Voices
Kiaira Fedorus is a disability advocate, who has spastic hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy. She’s currently enrolled at Norquest College, and turning 21 in a few months. In 2020 she started posting about her disability on Tiktok, and through the years has gained significant following across her social networks. Often her content is about how she struggles with societal norms, ableism and how CP affects her daily life. Her goal is to show people that disability doesn’t define ability.

Why Fit In When You Were Born To Stand Out?
Born and raised in Edmonton, Zachary has been a spokesperson on disability issues since he was young. He has consulted on a variety of building developments, including the Glenrose's Bill Black Auditorium, the Walterdale Theatre and Rogers Place.
Zachary is humbled to be a voice for the voiceless and considers this to be one of the most significant honours of his life. Zachary is a strong advocate for social justice and often uses his platform to shine a light on important disability issues such as lack of accessibility, ableism, and discrimination. While Zachary is a powerful advocate, he also understands the importance of balance and enjoys spending his free time with friends and family, playing video games, and indulging in good food and spirits. Finding Your Own Hope
Dr Alisha Rai, is a South African born family physician and co-founder of Hope for Cerebral Palsy and author of Mighty Mr. Aiden. Hope for Cerebral Palsy's mission is to enrich and support the lives of children affected with cerebral palsy and their families by proving access to private early intervention therapies so that they can achieve their full potential. They also aim to promote awareness and understanding of cerebral palsy and to increase inclusivity towards people living with disabilities.

How it all began: A couple of years ago, after getting their disabled daughter Kelty involved in modelling, her parents, Katie and Austin, quickly discovered how unaccustomed the fashion & marketing world was to working with kids like Kelty and how rare it was to see fair, tasteful, and professional representation of people with disabilities. After breaking his neck in 2004 from a diving accident, Sean Crump now lives his life as a quadriplegic. Debra Ashford Huff was born in London, Ontario, Canada. Shortly after college graduation, she moved to Alberta. She has remained in the Edmonton area for much of the time.
Debra has had a fulfilling 40+ year career as a Child Development Specialist working in various early intervention programs. Debra values her experiences of supporting families who have children with delays and disabilities. Her interest in this field started as a young teenager who was especially interested in babysitting children with various challenges.
Debra recently retired from the AHS-Edmonton Zone-Early Intervention Program and now she has time to pursue another passion. Keeping Up With Innovation

Adam's experience in working with those living with complex needs began in 2018 when he became the Director of Operations for the Assistive Technology Clinic (ATC) in Toronto. It was there that he was inspired to Co-Found evika with the mission to deliver free online educational content that helps people living with disabilities – and those who care for them – to live more independent and enjoyable lives. Episode 22 - Doing Something Outside Of Yourself
In this episode of My Life Without Limits, Carlos and Leah chat with Gavin Thomas a U of C student who is passionate about volunteering, cycling and raising awareness about cerebral palsy. He is hosting a fundraiser where he is attempting a virtual “Everesting.” This is when a cyclist rides the equivalent height of Mount Everest (29029ft of elevation gain; 8848m) in the form of hill repeats. Due to weather concerns, this will be done on the virtual cycling platform (Zwift), with the aim of completing it in under 12 hours. How cool is that??
