The Most Common Underlying Causes of Acne (Minisode #16)
Play • 22 min

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on with our health beneath the surface. Acne and other skin problems are signals that something is off in our body. Conventional medicine deals with symptoms, so their solutions for acne include lathering on potions and lotions, popping and pricking pimples, and taking antibiotics or strong liver-damaging medications. There’s got to be another way, right?

Fortunately, there is with Functional Medicine, which addresses the problem’s root cause. From this lens, we can understand that numerous factors contribute to acne, including nutrition, stress, toxicity, inflammation and hormonal and gut imbalances. That’s actually good news because it empowers us to make dietary and lifestyle changes that reverse acne and improve our overall health without the adverse side effects of pharmaceuticals and other invasive procedures.

In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Dr. Robin Berzin about the most common underlying causes of acne, and the connection between gut health and skin issues. We discuss why conventional acne treatments don’t actually work, and often end up doing more harm. We also talk about how the cosmetics we use on our skin can increase inflammation which inturn leads to acne, and the best skincare routine and products for someone suffering with acne.

Dr. Robin Berzin is the founder and CEO of Parsley Health. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Robin completed medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and trained in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She has also trained in Functional Medicine with the Institute for Functional Medicine, where she is an advisor on digital technology. In 2011 she co-founded the physician communication app Cureatr and subsequently has advised numerous startups in the healthcare space. Robin founded Parsley Health in order to make whole-body, transformative medicine accessible to everyone through better services and smart technology. When she is not at Parsley, you can find her at home in Brooklyn, upstate with her husband, son and two rescue dogs, or at her favorite vinyasa yoga class.

This episode is brought to you by the Pegan Shake.

How you start your morning sets the tone for the day. I’m a huge fan of morning routines, because I think they can transform your ability to focus, sleep well, and get the most out of your day, especially in this busy, modern world.

What I’ve found is that the best way to begin your day is to feed your body the right information or the right nutrients. That’s why Dr. Mark Hyman and I created the Pegan Shake. It’s a nutritionally packed morning blend designed to support healthy blood sugar, energy, and brain power.

It contains some of my most favorite brain boosting foods like MCT and avocado. It also features acacia fiber for healthy gut function and collagen, pumpkin, and pea protein to support muscle synthesis. Check it out at getfarmacy.com/peganshake.

TMHS 454: The Surprising Truth About Thyroid Health & The Thyroid Reset Diet - With Dr. Alan Christianson
In recent years, rates of thyroid disease have skyrocketed. And when you think about it, it’s really no surprise. When it comes to managing our health, the thyroid is a relatively overlooked piece of the puzzle. This small but mighty butterfly-shaped organ controls a multitude of functions in the body, including metabolism, tissue repair, hormone production, and more. Because the thyroid controls so many mechanisms in the body, a malfunctioning thyroid can cause symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, inflammation, and memory loss. While there’s a lack of accessible information about thyroid health, there’s also a lot of misinformation out there. In his new book, The Thyroid Reset Diet, Dr. Alan Christianson shares his latest research on thyroid health and strategies for restoring thyroid function. On today’s show, he’s sharing incredible insights from his research including statistics on thyroid disease, what you need to know about iodine consumption, and real solutions for regaining thyroid health. Enjoy! In this episode you’ll discover: * What the thyroid gland is, and what it’s responsible for in the body. * The role that iodine plays in the function of the thyroid. * What the two chemical forms of iodine are. * How much iodine you need for optimal thyroid function. * Why you won’t find iodine listed on food labels. * What can happen if you consume too much iodine. * Why thyroid disease rates have roughly tripled in the last few decades. * What a thyroid storm is, and the only way to cure it. * The three different types of thyroid diseases. * Why iodine is like bleach. * How the autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, occurs. * The three big drivers of thyroid disease. * What you need to know about iodine hiding in your personal care products. * Real food sources of iodine. * Why exercise is a key component of thyroid health. Five Motivators That Fuel Peak Performance – Steven Kotler with Dave Asprey : 784
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Steven Kotler believes there’s a formula for the impossible and that the answer lies in our biology. He’s spent a lifetime researching and looking for ways to achieve his own peak performance, and today we get his advice on how you can achieve yours.  In Steven’s newest book, “The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer” he’s combined neuroscience and decades of research to make a playbook for extreme performance improvement and an exploration of the frontiers of human possibility. He lays out four components to maintaining peak performance: motivation, learning, creativity and flow. He’s a New York Times-bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes. He’s also the executive director of the Flow Research Collective, an institute that researches the neuroscience of flow states and trains individuals to harness their own flow-state, so they can achieve more, faster. “One of the qualities of a flow state is this quality of effortless effort,” Steven says. “Bottom-up attention is really what it is instead of top-down attention. It's happening automatically.” While you can’t live in the flow state, we talk about how you can maximize your time in that state and stay in touch with your motivation. “When you talk about intrinsic drive, you're really talking about curiosity, passion, purpose, autonomy, and mastery,” Steven says. “Those five are our big five intrinsic motivators.” Once you have those five things, he explains how it becomes easier to begin setting goals and finding ways to constantly tune into your willpower in order to make them a reality. “Sometimes in peak performance you’ve got to go slow to go fast,” Steven says. “Learning to turn curiosity into passion and passion into purpose. This is one of those places where you got to go slow. Because once you get it right, these are three huge intrinsic motivators. If they're pointing in the same direction, it unlocks a tremendous amount.” Oh, and then we also talk about the time he flew a MIG-17 Russian fighter jet — without knowing how to fly.  Steven has lived an incredible life and has a ton of great knowledge, experience and insight to share.
