250: How to Heal from SIBO Without SIBO Taking Over Your Life w/ Phoebe Lapine
Play • 49 min
If You Want To Heal Your SIBO You Should:
  1. Address the three main risk factor buckets and identify the root cause of your bacteria overgrowth
  2. Find a bodyworker to help you navigate which protocol will work best for you
  3. Embrace a beautifully diverse diet by focusing on an anti-inflammatory protocol

SIBO, or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, affects millions of people but can be difficult to nail down. Unlike other gut imbalances, SIBO happens when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the upper part of your digestive tract. Because of the importance of the location of this bacteria, it takes the right support to heal your gut and reduce your inflammation.

Healing SIBO Through Food with Phoebe Lapine

Phoebe Lapine believes that food can and should be medicine. A writer, gluten-free chef, culinary instructor, Hashimoto’s advocate and so much more, Phoebe is here to share her story of autoimmune disease and healing SIBO from the inside out.

What You Need To Know About SIBO

Due to stress, lifestyle factors, and hormones, women suffer from SIBO far more often than men. It is important to understand the connections between all of these factors so that you can uncomplicate your symptoms and work on finding the healing protocol that is right for you.

Everything from structural issues in your gut to your body's ability to kill bacteria can have an impact on your likelihood of developing SIBO. Gas, bloating, thyroid hormones, and so much more can play a role here, which is why it is essential to equip yourself with the necessary knowledge to address your gut dysbiosis in the best way possible.

Finding the Right Treatment for Your Body

Addressing bacteria overgrowth takes an individualized approach to be the most effective possible. Antibiotics, herbs, and different diets can all be helpful depending on your unique sensitivity, lifestyle, and detox methods. It is important to know what you are working with before you start to treat your symptoms.

Phoebe suggests starting from a place of anti-inflammatory protocols. You don't have to stop enjoying food to cure your gut bacteria; all it takes is the knowledge to guide yourself through gut complications and get to a place of a beautifully diverse diet. Phoebe is a real example of the amazing possibilities of healing SIBO and clearing up what is going on in the body through food, lifestyle, and body kindness.

Do you or someone you love suffer from SIBO? Share which of Phoebe’s tips you are going to incorporate into your daily routine with me in the comments section of the episode page.

Quotes:

“Sometimes you just need help getting onto a higher plateau of healing.” (18:56)

“At the end of the day, this is all just connected tissue, and fascia and soft tissue muscles, and we have to make sure those are working, which is a whole different ballgame from the bacteria situation.” (24:58) - Dr. Mariza

“SIBO to me explains why a low fodmap diet is effective in terms of symptoms, because if you have perfectly normal bacteria in the wrong place too far up your digestive tract, and you feed them the foods they enjoy most, then, of course, you are going to have some sort of gas as part of that, having it be too far up your intestinal tract as well.” (33:18)

“It's never just SIBO, there is usually kind of a bigger issue at play, even if it is not necessarily causing the issue in of itself.” (33:33)

“Diversity is the spice of life, and we don't want to be overloading our system with large quantities of one ingredient.” (38:31)

In This Episode

  • Why women are more susceptible to SIBO than men (12:21)
  • The three different buckets that can impact your gut and hormone symbiosis (19:38)
  • Where to start when testing for SIBO and other digestive issues (25:42)
  • Which foods you should be focusing on to fix your SIBO and inflammation (31:34)
  • How to embrace the diversity of life with anti-inflammatory versions of comfort food (38:25)

How to Detect Possible Health Issues Through Basic Blood Work with Dr. Kylie Burton
Dr. Kylie Burton is a functional medicine specialist who has helped thousands of individuals with seemingly impossible health struggles to find answers, healing, and hope, even if they've been told their labs are normal. In this episode Dr. Kylie Burton teaches you how to interpret our own basic blood work called a CBC panel. Complete Blood Count (CBC) gives important information about the numbers and kinds of cells in the blood, especially red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A CBC helps your health professional check any symptoms, such as fatigue, weakness, or bruising, that you may have. A CBC also helps your health professional diagnose conditions, such as infection, anemia, and several other disorders. Often times labs can come back looking normal but DR. Kylie will teach you how to spot health problems even though everything is in range. How to detect if there are parasitic infections, viruses, bacteria, food sensitivities, EBV and autoimmune flares. Health & Hormone Support for Anti-aging| Women Over 50
Whether you're an anti-aging or, like me, a pro-aging advocate you're going to love this episode. My Guest: An honors English graduate from Tufts University, Dr. Stephen Petteruti continued on to medical school to become a Family Practice Physician. In 2014, with a holistic, patient-centered approach, Dr. Petteruti launched Intellectual Medicine 120—offering concierge medical services, functional medicine, facial anti-aging treatments, and advanced techniques to manage the body’s aging process. His next step was to bring the science of cellular health to Intellectual Medicine 120 with the addition of IV Vitamin Infusions—in a state-of-the-art, relaxing environment offering chelation therapy, high dose vitamin C for cancer clients, and lifestyle drips. Along with his wife Shannon, he is the founder of the DRIPBaR centers for IV vitamin therapy. Questions we answer in this episode: * At what age should women, or men, consider starting Hormone replacement therapy? What are the primary clues that they should be looking for? * A common question we’ve unpacked with other experts here on Flipping 50 and I’d love your opinion, does hormone therapy increase the risk of breast cancer for women, or prostate cancer for men? * You talk about avoiding the "big three," heart disease, cancer, dementia, in order to extend the healthy lifespan. What are the most important things you believe a listener can do beyond healthy living to avoid these chronic diseases and preserve youth? * Could you define the term "somatopause" for our listeners and discuss your opinion regarding the use of growth hormone for health support/antiaging. * The name of your center is "intellectual medicine 120" to signify the hundred-and-20-year lifespan. You really think humans can routinely live to that age? And that they’ll feel so good they want to? * anti-aging vs. pro-aging? Why You Need A Customized Keto Diet That's Perfect For YOU?
I found many people have trouble doing the keto diet! I think it's the best diet there is for those wanting to burn off their fat. But you must learn to do it correctly. Here's why a customized approach to the keto is best. You can check out what I think is an excellent customized keto plan. Get your own unique plan by going to wlmind.com/ck.  That's w-l-m-i-n-d.com/c-k For anyone trying to lose weight, I believe the Keto Diet will be your best choice. But, don't just jump into it without doing some study. If you do, you'll most likely fail. Not because the keto diet doesn't work, but because you lacked the correct knowledge to get a successful result. Why a customized keto diet is the best approach? Not everyone is the same. We all have different nutritional needs and we like different types of food. The great thing about the keto is that there are so many delicious foods for you to eat. You don't have to give up everything and starve yourself. Should I do the keto diet to lose weight? Is it right for me. The short answer is YES! You should. It's right for just about everyone. But like I said you have to know before you go. Learn about it first. Then of course there's the health benefits.  Things like: Return to normal blood pressure Handling type 2 diabetes Normal cholesterol levels Much less inflammation More energy in the body A lot more clarity and focus in the mind Feeling satisfied after eating for a longer time Many heart issues resolve quickly Faster recovery from hard work or exercise No longer feeling tired after eating Fogginess disappears Look, I've personally experienced many of these wins from doing the keto. I don't do it 100% of the time. I might do it for 3-6 months a year. I feel the body remembers because it gets easier to go into keto each time. I really suggest you look into having a go at it. Try it the right way. Try a customized approach like the one I mentioned earlier. If you really try it out the right way and I mean a good try, you'll understand what I've been trying to convey in this podcast. I believe keto is the best dieting style for people who need to lose weight fast. I also believe that getting a customized keto plan will be the most helpful for you. #325 - Dopamine & Serotonin: How Your “Feel Good” Transmitters Help with Cravings - with Dr. Ann Barter!
Welcome back to the podcast! In today’s must-listen episode, Chantel got to speak with Dr. Ann-Marie Barter! She is a chiropractor who graduated from the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon, an accredited 4 year Doctoral program that is considered a leader in evidence-based medicine, and the first Chiropractic school to be awarded a federal research grant. Dr. Barter underwent rigorous clinical training with some of the finest chiropractors. Dr. Barter has also undergone advanced training in Applied Kinesiology, completing over 400 extra classroom hours and is certified to practice Applied Kinesiology. She uses chiropractic care to improve the health and wellness in all areas of patient’s lives, whether they are having problems with back or neck pain, or just want to start feeling better when they wake up in the morning. Dr. Barter takes a “whole person” approach to chiropractic care, which means looking for the underlying causes of disease, discomfort, and pain, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. Many seemingly unrelated symptoms often arise from imbalances in the spinal column, extremities, biochemical disturbances, and stress and Dr. Barter will be able to determine the root of the problem and create a personalized chiropractic and wellness plan to suit each patient’s individual needs. In today’s episode, we discussed: * Dopamine and serotonin * What are some of the downsides of an elimination diet? * How does willpower affect your neurotransmitters? * How sugar affects your body and the reason why people use it as a quick fix? * What is H Pylori and how to heal it? * Iron deficiency: What is the root cause? * How intermittent fasting can heal your gut? * Could a mold free coffee bring a healthier microbiome? * Antibiotics * And more! The Fasting Highway
Graeme Currie
Episode 48 Shana Hussin RDN author of Fast To Heal. We talk nutrition and intermittent fasting.
Shana Hussin, RDN, worked as a nutrition therapist for 15 years in conventional medicine prior to her son falling ill with a severe and chronic digestive disorder in 2016. Upon diagnosis, Shana was told by several doctors nutrition had no bearing on his illness, and he would need lifelong medications to manage his debilitating symptoms. Shana began searching for the root cause of many chronic disease states, and left work in conventional medicine. Through relentless research and trial and error, she healed her son using an unconventional therapy.  Throughout the process, Shana gained extensive knowledge in holistic health and natural healing approaches, including the hormonal key to burning fat rather than storing it, by using intermittent fasting and clean eating. Shana has worked with many people to help them lose weight and improve their health. Most have suffered from chronic obesity and related health challenges for decades. All have tried countless strategies and programs to lose weight with no long-term success.  Clients who implement Shana's strategies most often experience weight loss and countless noticeable non-scale victories. Shana has witnessed many previously struggling with binge eating and emotional eating adapt normalized eating patterns after implementing time-restricted eating. Their decades-long negative relationship with food becomes positive and healthy. As a practitioner, Shana felt it her calling to bring these unconventional nutritional therapies to light, and she wrote the book Fast To Heal. Using her signature Nutritional PEACE program, she has developed a step by step, natural process for people to gain their health back. Restoring hope and health to those she educates is a rewarding gift she has been honored with. Best of all, clients are noticeably happier, with renewed hope their bodies can heal!
