Supporting the communication needs of children with complex trauma – part 2
How do speech pathologists support the needs of children who’ve experienced complex trauma? In this conversation with Kate Headley, a speech pathologist in the Links Trauma Healing Service in NSW, we explore her role in a multidisciplinary team that supports children with complex trauma living in out-of-home care. Before working at Links, Kate spent many years working in the disability sector in rural and remote NSW and combines speech pathology with her work as a primary school teacher.
In part 2 of this series, we continue exploring the approaches Kate uses to ensure her work is child-centred and that the child’s own goals lead the direction of therapy. She also elaborates on the role speech pathology plays in delivery of a multidisciplinary complex trauma service.
*In this episode you will learn:*
* more about building trust in the first session
* how to identify what it is the child would like to improve
* the importance of checking in with the child about how things are going
