An Omaha native, Deborah became the first female United States Attorney for Nebraska in 2009. She quickly was recognized for her leadership skills while United States Attorney by her appointment as Chair of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s Federal Task Force on Violence Against Native American women followed by appointment to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s Advisory Committee. She was instrumental in developing one of four pilot projects in the United States to dedicate an Assistant U.S. Attorney to the Nebraska tribes for the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence and sexual assault cases against Native American women. The project resulted in an increase of 43% of cases indicted.

On this episode of Education With An Edge I have Dr. Patricia Newman! Dr. Newman is a Clinical Child Psychologist and the Founder and Executive Director of RESPECT. She also holds graduate degrees in Educational Psychology and Special Education. Dr. Newman is in private practice with Family Enrichment, Inc. and works as a Medical Consultant for the Nebraska Department of Disability Determinations. She is the recipient of several professional and community awards including the YWCA Tribute to Women Award for her work in the areas of Human Service and Community Advocacy; the Nebraska School Psychologists Association “Psychologist of the Year” award; the Cultural Adult Program Award from the United Way of the Midlands; the Leadership Award for Prevention of Domestic Violence Programming from the Y/WCA; and the Community Service Award from the Jewish Federation of Omaha. Dr. Newman is the playwright of two of RESPECT’s plays.
