Dr Ann Barter | How to Balance Neurotransmitters in the Brain Naturally - KKP: 210
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Ann-Marie Barter, a chiropractor who serves Niwot, Longmont, Boulder, Lyons, Louisville, Lafayette and the surrounding communities in the Denver Metro Area. Dr. Ann graduated from the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon, an accredited 4 year Doctoral program that is considered a leader in evidence-based medicine, and the first Chiropractic school to be awarded a federal research grant. Dr. Ann underwent rigorous clinical training with some of the finest chiropractors. Dr. Ann has also undergone advanced training in Applied Kinesiology, completing over 400 extra classroom hours and is certified to practice Applied Kinesiology. She has also studied Functional Blood Chemistry under Dr. Kharrazian. Dr. Ann also hosts The Fearless Health Podcast. The show is dedicated to all thing’s natural health and wellness. Whether it be alternative and functional medicine, structural, spiritual, or fitness and nutrition, Dr. Ann will cover it based on her experiences in practice over the last ten years or with the help of special guests and curated interviews. In this episode, Dr. Ann talks all about neurotransmitters. First, she explains that neurotransmitters are the messengers in our body; they are crucial to our overall health and happiness. If you're curious about how well your neurotransmitters are working, Dr. Ann recommends getting an Organic Acids Test (OAT) done. Plus, Dr. Ann reveals which supplements she recommends to her patients struggling with dopamine levels. Tune in as we talk about the effect carbs will have on dopamine and why ketosis is so essential for our neurotransmitter health. ⏱️ The Art of Fasting Webinar. She didn’t feel well, but the doctor told her she was normal. * One day, Dr. Ann had terrible stomach pain, she went to a different doctor. It turns out, Dr. Ann’s appendix exploded. * Later, Dr. Ann had severe hives that sent her to the emergency room. No one talked to her about diet. So, she sought care from natural providers. They spoke to her about diet, environmental pollutants, and hormones. [05:15] Why Dr. Ann Loves Neurotransmitters * Ann meets patients who just can’t change their diets. Person after person, Dr. Ann wanted to know what was going on. * She started to run tests on herself and found out her neurotransmitters were in the toilet. Dr. Ann was exposed to black mold, it was contributing to a lot of her problems. * When she found the black mold, Dr. Ann moved out. [09:15] About Neurotransmitters * Neurotransmitters are messengers for your body. * They work in the brain and make us feel good. However, they also run digestion, muscle coordination, and other functions. * When we think about adrenal health, dopamine shares a pathway with our fight or flight chemicals. It’s associated with our adrenal health. Sometimes when someone is exhausted, it could be dopamine depletion. * Dopamine can become depleted for a variety of reasons. Some people do not methylate correctly. Chronic stress can also deplete dopamine. [11:45] How Methylation Works * You need certain chemicals to make the dopamine conversion. * There is a test to figure out how your pathways are working. * If you don’t have the nutrients to run a pathway, it might not be a methylation issue. * Make sure that you are running the pathway appropriately. * Not having the right nutrients can cause stress. * When Dr. Ann runs testing, people are depleted in Vitamin C, B6, and magnesium. * It can be as simple as supporting the body with some nutrients so the pathway can run better. [16:15] Getting The Organic Acids Test * There are other tests, but Dr. Ann uses an Organic Acids Test. * This test is fantastic because it can check for black mold. * Before taking the test, do a glutathione challenge. * If someone has dopamine depletion, it could be related to something they have been exposed to. [22:00] Recommending Supplements * When someone goes to see Dr. Ann, they have poor gut health. That’s why Dr. Ann will recommend supplements. * If you are chronically iron deficient, then something in the gut could be creating inflammation. * Ann would like to kill critters before supplementing. * If you can optimize your gut, you can get the necessary vitamins and minerals through your food. * Ann will give a product that has B6, B9, B12, and B2. However, she checks with the individual where they are high and where they are low. [24:40] How Carbs Will Affect Our Dopamine * When someone wants carbs to feel satisfied, they could go overboard. * Processed carbs make our neurotransmitters pop up and crash even lower than before. * When you have been overeating carbs, you try and increase your dopamine levels. However, the dopamine will be lower than they were before. [33:10] The Benefits Of Ketosis On Neurotransmitters * All hormones rise in ketosis. * Being in ketosis is beneficial for neurotransmitters as long as you are not too depleted. * If someone is starving themselves, then it may not be beneficial for neurotransmitters. * As a general rule, fasting is good for neurotransmitters. [39:20] The Best Foods For Neurotransmitters * You want proteins! * Vegetables and fats are also essential. * Nuts and seeds will help with your neurotransmitters as well. [50:40] How To Know What You’re Lacking * Run an Organic Acids Test (OAT) to see what’s going on. * It’s a urine test. [52:40] Increasing Glutathione * Ann will give it to her patients straight – it is critical for overall health. * Also, Dr. Ann recommends a glutathione liposomal. AND MUCH MORE! #174: What If It’s Not Depression with Dr. Achina Stein
More than 60 million Americans are affected by mental health issues every year. While the conventional medicine approach focuses on balancing neurotransmitters in the brain through medication, the Functional Medicine approach is to look for the root cause. There’s a saying in Functional Medicine, “fire in the gut, fire in the brain.” If you have inflammation, or dysbiosis in the gut, then it’s going to produce an inflammatory response that in turn affects the brain.  On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Achina Stein, an osteopathic physician and board-certified psychiatrist. She is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and is a certified practitioner of the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Stein has extensive experience working with children and adults who have chronic and persistent mental health problems in the community at large, in the prison population, and in a geriatric inpatient setting. Dr. Stein is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and received the NAMI-RI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2008. She is presently in private practice in Rhode Island, and is the author of the book, What If It’s Not Depression? In this episode, Dr. Stein shares her story of discovering Functional Medicine while searching for answers to her son’s mental health crisis. He suffered from acute depression and suicidal ideation. He was stabilized on three medications and was “out of the woods” in terms of safety, but he wasn’t the same as before the episode. He was still suffering from some debilitating symptoms and had side effects from the medication. Dhru and Dr. Stein discuss the Functional Medicine approach to addressing depression and other mental health disorders. They also talk about the connection between autoimmune conditions and gut health. In this episode, we dive into:  -Dr. Stein’s son’s health crisis (2:50)  -Celiac disease and brain fog (14:58) -How long it took to notice a shift in her son’s health after taking a Functional Medicine approach (17:50) -What Dr. Stein did to turn around her own health (23:26)  -The connection between gut health and autoimmune conditions (26:19) -The 5 R’s of Gut Restoration (34:55) -The inspiration behind Dr. Stein’s book, What If It’s Not Depression? (36:21)  -Dr. Stein’s assessments for discovering the root cause of symptoms (44:51) -Where listeners can learn more about Dr. Achina Stein (51:26) For more on Dr. Achina Stein visit her website https://fxnmind.com/. In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Autumn Kumlien, a Registered Dietician and Nutritionist from Milton, Wisconsin. This episode is brought to you by Audible! Audible is the leading provider of spoken-word entertainment and audiobooks, including bestsellers like Gin’s latest book Fast. Feast. Repeat. Visit audible.com/ifstories to start exploring Audible with a 30-day free trial.  Autumn shares that from third grade on, she was the tallest and biggest of all of her friends. No one made a big deal about her weight, but suddenly, "I thought I better do something about it." She began portioning out her food. Autumn's mother began dieting around this time, and she did the same. By eighth grade, Autumn had dieted her way to 205 pounds, her father calling her "Amazon Girl." By college, Autumn had leaned out some, and decided to join her mother on Weight Watchers. She easily lost more weight, but maintaining it was very difficult, and she gained back all the weight she had lost. After a long journey with trying to get pregnant, and then pregnancy itself, Autumn was not able to lose the weight she had gained. Being a dietician, she felt as though she knew what to do to lose weight, but nothing worked! By the time Autumn was about to turn forty, with her weight climbing, her husband heard about IF through a podcast. She began IF in November of 2018 with a window of between 7-11 hours. In January of 2019, Autumn found the IF Stories podcast, listening each day on her way to work. She also read Delay, Don't Deny and The Obesity Code. She gradually increased her fasting hours, and currently follows a 20:4 protocol. Autumn has gone from 175 pounds to 140 pounds. Her husband joined her with IF, losing 87 pounds himself.  The advice Autumn would give new IFers: "Trust the process. Don't go by just the scale because it's just data! Enjoy the process." Heal Your Gut for a Healthy Menopause Dr. Liz Lipski devotes her life to finding innovative and sustainable ways to heal your gut microbiome. She shares how quickly you can change your gut health. It might surprise you to learn you can start feeling improvements in around 24 hours! Did you know that the word diet doesn’t have to refer to food restriction for weight loss? We’re changing the approach to the diet to focus on the type of food and eating habits that help YOU thrive. Liz explains why more and more people are turning to restrictive diets, such as gluten-free, vegan, Keto, or carnivore instead of getting to the root of their health problems. Especially for post-menopausal women, we need to focus on eating estrogen-balancing foods. Liz shares some of the best foods for this, including broccoli, cabbage, and kale, so make sure you’re loading your plates with these. You also might have noticed, as you age, that you can no longer tolerate some foods like you used to. Liz explains how this could be a histamine intolerance that’s showing up in your body through bloating or other uncomfortable symptoms. Discover the FODMAP Diet One way that Liz encourages you to explore your food sensitivities and intolerances is to follow the FODMAP diet. This is an elimination diet that can indicate what foods you should avoid. One thing we both know is that when we put our patients on the FODMAP diet, their symptoms improve dramatically in a short period of time. Most people have a diet that’s very high in processed foods. We should all endeavor to be more mindful of what we eat and try to stick to more natural, whole foods. Trust me, when you find the diet that’s right for your body, you will thrive on it! Liz also explains the second part to having a healthy gut: making time for yourself and keeping your stress levels in check. When we prioritize our own mental health and well-being, we’re better able to keep our guts healthy. Putting ourselves first also gives us more energy to assist others. How do you fill your own bucket? What activities do you find gives you more energy? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.
