What to Do in the Saddle Today? Planning Your Rides - Part 2: Partnership
Play • 17 min

How many days will you ride this week? What will you do on each of those days? Are all of these things moving you and your horse closer to your goals? Big questions… And ones that I think not enough riders are taking responsibility for in their riding.

This is part 2 of a 3 part series to help you really become intentional about your riding plan.

Each part is an important element that, I believe, is absolutely essential for you in your riding. It is when you combine these three elements on a weekly basis, weaving them throughout your rides, that you will begin to see true success in your riding.

Part 1 was Fun. The reason most people show up for their second-ever ride. And the reason most riders actually stop riding as much as they like. It just isn’t as much fun anymore. Find out how and why you can make Fun an intentional part of your riding plan HERE

Part 2 - Partnership

It seems so, well, obvious. Partnership. However, because it is so obvious, like fun, many riders forget to actually be intentional about developing this in their riding and relationship with their horse. Partnership is trust. It is the relationship.

A partnership is the ‘liking each other’ part that will be essential to get you both over any sticky situations that show up.

It is intentionally developing the understanding between horse and rider. This allows you not only to trust each other more but also to build confidence in your own abilities as well. Ever noticed how you feel more confident about something you must-do if you have someone who supports you there beside you? That is a partnership.

EP029: A Pod About Listening to The Pod
I recently asked people on FB what they were doing when they listened to my podcast. Many people were driving, some were doing household chores, some were in the bathtub, some having a cuppa tea or coffee, and there was lots and lots of manure-picking! So I decided to make a podcast that would connect all those activities to horsemanship… curious?   About the Host: Karen Rohlf, author and creator of Dressage Naturally, is an internationally recognized clinician who is changing the equestrian educational paradigm. She teaches students of all disciplines and levels from around the world in her clinics and the Dressage Naturally virtual programs. Karen is well known for training horses with a priority on partnership, a student-empowering approach to teaching, and a positive and balanced point of view. She believes in getting to the heart of our mental, emotional, and physical partnership with our horses by bringing together the best of the worlds of dressage and partnership-based training.  Karen’s passion for teaching extends beyond horse training. Her For The Love Of The Horse: Transform Your Business Seminar and Mastermind/Mentorship programs are a result of her commitment to helping heart-centered equine professionals thrive so that horses may have a happier life in this industry.   Resource Links Join the conversation in our Dressage Naturally Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DressageNaturallyLand (https://www.facebook.com/groups/DressageNaturallyLand) For hundreds of training videos at a very low cost, check out the Video Classroom: https://dnc.dressagenaturally.net/ (https://dnc.dressagenaturally.net/) The Dressage Naturally Book: https://shop.dressagenaturally.net/collections/home-page-featured/products/book-dvd%5C (https://shop.dressagenaturally.net/collections/home-page-featured/products/book-dvd\) The blog I refer to: https://blog.dressagenaturally.net/106-the-sweet-spot-walking-the-talk-or-in-this-case-running-the-talk (https://blog.dressagenaturally.net/106-the-sweet-spot-walking-the-talk-or-in-this-case-running-the-talk) See all of Karen Rohlf’s Online Programs here: https://dressagenaturally.net/online-programs/ (https://dressagenaturally.net/online-programs/) Sign up for 3 free videos and Karen’s mailing list: https://dressagenaturally.net/free-dressage-training-videos/ (https://dressagenaturally.net/free-dressage-training-videos/)     Thanks for listening! MwH 126: TC Long
This episode with of Married With Horses is with our good friend TC Long. TC is a jack of all trades when it comes to western sports. He announces all sorts of events and has for years. He got his start with Booger Barter in the mid-00’s and has been going strong ever since. He produces barrel races (Elite Barrel Racing) and rodeos. He also has a monogramming business called Rodeo Monogram Shop that, you guessed it, works with rodeo folks (and others) producing hats, jackets, sponsor shirts, etc. This guy really has his hand in a lot of things. If he wasn’t busy enough, he and his wife Christie are new parents to a 5-month old little boy. We’ve known him for years and years and really think highly of him. Should’ve had him on here WAY earlier, but better late than never! Life is short. Ride a Unicorn! The Connection Between Bodily Sensation & The Emotional Brain
It’s a raw, uncut, unedited podcast for you this week! I had planned to release a different episode, but we made an executive decision to hold that off for a couple of weeks’ time (super excited to bring that to you then!). In the meantime, I had two options: * Leave the podcast for this week and have a two-week gap * Roll with whatever came up even if I didn’t have time to present it as a perfect package Given this is here with you now, I have gone with the latter. So here it is for you, my Sunday morning conversation around the nature of sensation and the relationship it has with our emotional brain and motor patterns and function (isn’t this what everyone muses over when they are having their Sunday morning coffee?). What’s the deal with all of that? Here’s a brief breakdown. Many of us find ourselves in groundhog day experiences with our horses based on certain feelings or sensations that arise in the body. Whilst those sensations can feel concrete and absolute, they are inherently subjective. Think of them as a mash-up of everything you have thought, experienced, or been told in relation to a similar experience in the past. What then happens is that our body registers a certain feeling in response to the environment, and we label that feeling based on something that has happened in the past. That labeling or thought process then triggers a motor response and we find ourselves acting out the same experiences on a repetitive loop. In order to move away from that, there are some key things we need to consider: * Our associations with sensation and discomfort in the body as a whole, and the decoupling of stories and labels around them * The secondary gain we experience from what we would primarily understand as negative behavior or experience * The true meaning of sensation and how we can use that to bring ourselves more into the present We discuss all this and more in this episode!
